The shot has been described as the purest expression of batting and a destroyer of innings, matches and careers Taunton, 3 April 2026. Somerset are hosting Nottinghamshire, the defending county champions, in their first fixture of the new season and are 20 for two having been sent into bat. It’s murky and cold. The batters wear cable-knit sweaters and the spectators in the crowd have wisely decided not to eschew their winter coats. Plenty peer out at the action from under tightly drawn hoods. The hulking Notts fast bowler Dillon Pennington steams in towards Somerset’s James Rew. The pitch is lush and only a shade less green than the uncut strips either side, more “Shrek’s forehead” than “Kermit’s belly” in cricket’s internationally recognised Pitch Greenness Scale™ . By August it will be paler, baked and cracked – you guessed it, “Yoda’s shin”. For now, though, the conditions suggest everything is in the fielding side’s favour. Rew taps his bat and blinks towards the bowler. Continue reading...

Leirao/iStock via Getty Images Thesis Lumen Technologies ( LUMN ) has just reported a somewhat mixed quarter from a market perspective. Non-GAAP EPS came in at -$0.47, a figure that missed expectations by quite a wide margin, whilst revenue managed to reach $2.89 billion, which came in slightly ahead of estimates. And this was despite revenue declining about 9% year-over-year. I think the earnings miss highlights a lot of ongoing pressure on profitability here but also the impact of restructuring and financing costs, even though the top line showed us some resilience. What 's important is that the company raised their full-year free cash flow guidance to $1.9 to $2.1 billion, a range that is up from the prior $1.2 to $1.4 billion mark, which would signal stronger-than-expected cash generation. Likely, this is a key driver behind the stock moving higher by about 4% post-announcement despite the EPS miss. However, the stock actually closed about 1% lower yesterday. Lumen Technologies, Inc. My bull case for Lumen here is that the market is somewhat undervaluing a real transition from a declining telecom to a high-margin, software-driven network platform. We 're seeing good signs with improving free cash flow and strong early NaaS adoption, and now the Alkira acquisition should accelerate growth into higher-value AI and multi-cloud connectivity, as I 'll explain. So in short, if Lumen executes, today 's discounted valuation could re-rate quite materially with digital revenue scaling and cash flow proving sustainable. 1Q26 Review So Lumen has just announced their 1Q26 earnings , and on the surface, it looks quite mixed. However, my view is that underneath it shows a company in the middle of a deliberate and pretty aggressive transition. Revenue actually declined year-over-year by about 9% to $2.9 billion, which we can mainly put down to continued erosion in their legacy and mass-market businesses. Their mass market segment saw revenue drop a steep 31%. I think the more s...
