However, there can be a cost to holding long-term cash beyond what is needed for these purposes. Inflation, the general increase in prices of goods and services over time, can quietly erode your purchasing power as idle cash may earn less interest than the rate of inflation. On average, Americans earn just 0.39% from the interest from their savings accounts , which could be a missed opportunity in today’s yield environment (Figure 1). By actively putting idle cash to work, investors can seek to offset the effects of inflation and potentially generate meaningful short-term returns without taking on significant risk. Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images News NASA is set to launch the first crewed mission toward the moon in over half a century on Wednesday, as the U.S. seeks to reassert its dominance in space. The mission — dubbed Artemis II — will send four astronauts on an approximately 10-day journey closer to the moon than any human has been since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. The astronauts won't land on the lunar surface, but will instead venture around the moon and back. They will be the first people that NASA's Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft carry into space. Orion, built by NASA and Lockheed Martin ( LMT ), is currently the only spacecraft capable of crewed deep space flight and high-speed return to Earth from the vicinity of the moon. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said Artemis II is on schedule to launch Wednesday evening. "The rocket is healthy, the spacecraft is ready, the crew is in position, and the weather is looking good," he posted on X. The aim of the Artemis II mission is to test Orion's life-support systems, laying the groundwork for future crewed missions to the lunar surface. "Artemis II science operations will lay the foundation for safe and efficient human exploration of the Moon and Mars," NASA said. Wednesday's launch will be followed by the Artemis III mission in 2027, which will test rendezvous and docking capabilities between Orion and one or both commercial landers from SpaceX ( SPACE ) and Blue Origin ( BORGN ). The next launch in the lunar program will be Artemis IV in early 2028, which will send astronauts to the surface of the moon to explore its South Pole region.
