China's major state-backed semiconductor investment fund is in talks to lead DeepSeek's ( DEEPSEEK ) first fundraising round that could value the AI startup at about $45B, the Financial Times reported, citing four sources. Backing from the China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, referred to as the "Big Fund," would cement DeepSeek's ( DEEPSEEK ) position as a leader among China's large language model (LLM) players. Other investors eyeing a stake in DeepSeek ( DEEPSEEK ) include Tencent ( TCEHY ). DeepSeek CEO Liang Wenfeng, who controls 89.5% of the company, may also invest personally in this financing round. Notably, DeepSeek's ( DEEPSEEK ) valuation was around $20B when it started fundraising talks just weeks ago. The Big Fund was established to invest in domestic semiconductor companies, with the aim of helping China achieve self-sufficiency in the industry. The fund has invested in companies such as Semiconductor Manufacturing International, the largest chip foundry in mainland China, and memory chipmaker Yangtze Memory Technologies. The fund has not publicly backed any Chinese LLM firms yet.
