No one will be surprised to hear that inflation has picked up. But new data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis confirms it. The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index ( PCEPI ), which is the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation, grew at an annualized rate of 8.3 percent in March 2026, up from 4.6 percent in the prior month. The PCEPI grew at an annualized rate of 5.6 percent over the last six months and 3.5 percent over the last year. Figure 1. Headline and Core Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index Inflation, March 2021-March 2026 Much of the observed increase over the last two months is related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has pushed up energy prices. The price index for energy goods and services grew 11.6 percent in March - or 271.8 percent annualized. The price of energy has grown 14.4 percent over the last year. High inflation is not limited to the energy sector, however. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices and is thought to be a better gauge of the underlying rate of inflation, remains well above the Fed’s longer-run target. Core PCEPI grew at an annualized rate of 3.6 percent in March 2026. It grew at an annualized rate of 3.7 percent over the last six months and 3.2 percent over the last year. AIER’s Monetary Neutrality Report , released this morning, identifies the primary driver of the broader inflation problem: excess nominal spending growth. Milton Friedman taught us that “Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon in the sense that it is and can be produced only by a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than in output.” When the amount of money being spent in an economy grows faster than real output, prices must rise. And when an increase in nominal spending growth is not matc...

Guido Mieth/DigitalVision via Getty Images The Eaton Vance Limited Duration Income Fund ( EVV ) is a closed-end fund that income-seeking investors may be attracted to as a way of achieving their goals of earning a high level of current income from the assets that they already possess. On the surface, this fund appears to be a reasonable way to accomplish that, as it boasts an 8.97% yield at the current share price, which is quite a bit higher than most other assets in the market. In addition, the fund seeks to limit the amount of interest-rate risk that its shareholders are exposed to, which could be attractive to anyone who suffered realized or unrealized losses from positions in long-term bonds over the past five years. Unfortunately, though, this fund is not particularly tax-efficient, and investors in higher tax brackets will lose a lot of yield to federal income taxes if they do not take precautions to protect themselves. In addition, inflation has been worsening over the past few months, and this could weigh on bond prices and limit real returns. With that said, though, a limited-duration bond fund such as this one is still better than a fund that invests in long-term bonds for anyone who is looking to preserve the purchasing power of the wealth that they worked hard to earn. About The Eaton Vance Limited Duration Income Fund The website for the Eaton Vance Limited Duration Income Fund states that the fund has the primary objective of providing its investors with a very high level of current income, which makes sense considering that this is a fixed-income fund that primarily invests in bonds. After all, bonds are income vehicles, as the only net investment return that they provide if held from issuance until maturity is the coupon payments that they pay to their owners. With that said, the website states that the fund provides: Access to a broad range of income asset classes, with allocations directed by Fund portfolio managers. If read literally, this could ...
