Tom Werner/DigitalVision via Getty Images In December 2025, I had argued that Lumentum ( LITE ) was trading materially above its long-term fundamental value. I saw the revenue surge more as a cyclical recovery at that point (aided by AI tailwinds) and was not willing to underwrite market extrapolations that positioned Lumentum as a structurally moat-like story. Since then, Lumentum has rallied ~190%, decisively proving my cautious stance wrong and an opportunity lost. This rally has had some rerating legs to it, but not all of it has been speculative excess - latest numbers and commentary do show a revenue ramp already supporting forward estimates to a large extent. That is an important data point, because AI euphoria has rewarded several cyclical plays with explosive re-ratings in the past. Lumentum seems to have earned a lot of the rally through established growth and strong visibility to meet forward expectations. Lumentum's positioning within optical networking has helped its explosive surge in the past 6 months - one of few pockets of growth and momentum in a market that has otherwise been cooler even around AI trades. Optical networking, like memory, has been a beneficiary of AI-driven bandwidth bottlenecks, tightening supply, pricing power, and hyperscaler infrastructure demand. This thesis is, in a way, a continuation of the Sandisk versus Micron thesis I wrote not so long ago - looking at erstwhile cyclical plays that have seen a lot of traction lately (forming rare pockets of outrageous growth in AI and growth markets), some of which is narrative and expectations, but a lot has to do with real demand-supply imbalances that look persistent. In the Sandisk versus Micron thesis, I had highlighted the perils of going unhedged into either trade at the moment, because the markets could decide to start compressing multiples far ahead of peak fundamentals - especially a threat as stagflation fears and geopolitical uncertainties threaten risk-on sentiment. I think ...

The Pentagon scrapped plans to send about 4,000 Army troops to Poland, people familiar with the matter said, part of a broader review of the US military presence in Europe as President Donald Trump feuds with Germany and other members of the NATO alliance. The affected troops belong to the 1st Cavalry Division’s 2nd Armored Brigade Combat team based in Ft. Hood, Texas, and some were already on their way, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations. The unit’s deployment was announced in March as part of what the Army said was “a regular rotation of forces.” Commanders in Europe were set to decide where exactly the troops would be stationed but many were bound for Poland, the people said. The reasoning behind the decision wasn’t immediately clear given that Trump has remained close to Polish leaders even as he’s accused other European leaders of ignoring his requests for help in the US war with Iran. The Pentagon declined to comment. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and acting Army Chief of Staff General Chris LaNeve testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on May 12 and didn’t mention the cancellation. The decision was reported earlier by the Army Times. Trump said earlier he would pull at least 5,000 troops from Germany and suggested a broader drawdown of the US’s 85,000 military personnel in Europe was in the works. That followed a war of words with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz , who said last month that the US was being “humiliated” by Iranian negotiators. Read More: NATO Nations Brace for Trump to Pull More Troops from Europe Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said earlier that the US has informed its allies about a possible pause in the rotation of troops to Europe as the Pentagon reviews deployment plans on the continent. “Lithuania has been informed of possible changes of the rotation in the US presence in Europe,” Kaunas said in an emailed comment to Bloomberg, adding that the country hasn’t re...

Pioneering and controversial geneticist who was one of the first to sequence the human genome, in part by using his own DNA At the international BioVision conference in Lyon in February 2001, the geneticist Craig Venter performed a remarkable piece of scientific barnstorming. Human beings possess far fewer genes than science had ever realised, he announced. We have about 30,000, far lower than previous estimates of 100,000. Such lack of heritable material showed people are not prisoners of their genes but are shaped primarily by environmental influences, he added. “We simply do not have enough genes for this idea of biological determinism to be right,” said Venter, who has died aged 79. “The wonderful diversity of the human species is not hard-wired in our genetic code. Our environments are critical.” Continue reading...

Alex Wong/Getty Images News China agreed to purchase 200 Boeing ( BA ) aircraft, President Donald Trump said Thursday, signaling a potential thaw in a market that has largely shut out the U.S. planemaker for years. The announcement, made in a Fox News interview, lacked specifics on aircraft types or timing. Boeing ( BA ) shares fell 4.8% midday, suggesting investors were unconvinced the deal is firm. Big headline, missing fine print Trump said China agreed to buy 200 “big” jets, exceeding Boeing’s ( BA ) initial target of 150. But no airline confirmation has emerged, and Boeing did not immediately comment. Analysts noted that without firm airline orders, the deal would not count toward Boeing’s ( BA ) backlog. Past agreements with China have sometimes failed to materialize. Long-awaited return to China If completed, the order would mark Boeing’s ( BA ) first major sale into China in nearly a decade and could help revive its position in the world’s second-largest aviation market. Boeing has struggled to compete with Airbus ( EADSF ) ( EADSY ) in China, losing ground after trade tensions and the prolonged grounding of the 737 Max. Chinese carriers have ordered hundreds of Airbus jets in recent years, while Boeing ( BA ) bookings have been minimal. A renewed pipeline from China would support Boeing’s ongoing turnaround and give Chinese airlines access to scarce aircraft supply as global demand continues to exceed production capacity. For investors, the significance hinges on whether this becomes a binding order. A confirmed deal would boost Boeing’s backlog, improve cash flow visibility and signal easing U.S.-China trade friction, all positive for aerospace suppliers and global industrials. But the lack of detail and China’s history of unfulfilled commitments mean markets are likely to discount the headline until contracts are signed, keeping volatility in Boeing shares and the broader aerospace sector. cokada/iStock via Getty Images Investment Thesis I reiterate my buy rating on the iShares MSCI Brazil Small-Cap ETF (NASDAQ: EWZS ). This is not my first article on Brazilian small caps, actually I wrote my first article in 2024 and some comprehensive articles after that. Brazilian small caps were forgotten some years ago, but now an interesting cyclical pattern can change this thesis. iShares MSCI Brazil Small-Cap ETF The EWZS is the most known Brazilian small cap ETF on the market. This ETF is managed by BlackRock, has an expense ratio of 0.59% and $326 million in AUM. EWZS replicates the MSCI Brazil Small Cap Index and the main holdings are below. Top 10 Holdings (SA) There are 76 holdings and an interesting diversification as the top 10 holdings account for 33%. Context Brazil was the worst ETF country two years ago. The scenario changed drastically as characteristics like geopolitical safety, food security and rare earths are valued in the current landscape. This made the EWZ (the most known Brazilian ETF in the world) rise 33% in one year. EWZS rose too but just 17%! EWZS vs EWZ (SA) This is an asymmetry, and I will explain why. Brazilian Small Caps x large caps It's not normal that large caps always outperform small caps. The Brazilian economy is sensitive to commodities, and commodity prices change a lot. This cyclicality is very interesting now for small caps, which is an initial attraction of this thesis. Small vs Large Caps (Azuria) Better macroeconomic scenario The Brazilian debt/GDP soared to 66% in the Lula administration and surpassed even that of the Bolsonaro administration (when we had the pandemic). Brazilian Debt/GDP (Bloomberg) This is terrible for the economy and explains why the Brazilian central bank holds such a high interest rate. Result? Brazilian companies have never been so leveraged and this contaminates the Brazilian small cap stocks too. Debt Among Brazilian Companies (Bloomberg, Serasa) The good news is that the Brazilian central ban...
