There is legitimate scrutiny of antisemitism on the left, but at the same time, rightwing media outlets offend with impunity. That makes no sense The media’s message appears to have cut through. At the crucial rally against antisemitism in London on Sunday, Zack Polanski, the Jewish leader of the Green party of England and Wales, was not invited to speak , on the grounds that he had not done enough to root out antisemitism from the party. But Nigel Farage was invited, on the grounds that his party, Reform UK, has “expressed very broad support for the fight against antisemitism”. More than two thousand Jews saw things differently and signed a petition arguing that the invitation to Farage “fundamentally undermines” the message of solidarity in defence of Jewish safety and dignity. I agree with them. Antisemitism must be stamped out everywhere. “Never again” means zero tolerance for this age-old hate, wherever it occurs and whoever voices it. It is indeed a problem on the left, and I’ve often found myself in dispute with those who downplay or minimise it . George Monbiot is a Guardian columnist Continue reading...

The series quickly withdrew a shirt that stirred up a strong backlash. But IndyCar has been playing with fire for a while This could be the summer of IndyCar. Formula One fatigue is beginning to set in , both globally and among the American audiences who helped fuel the sport’s recent boom. Nascar, for all its national reach in the US and lingering cultural import, remains a largely regional attraction. IndyCar, on the other hand, boasts a wealth of personalities, is anchored in real structural parity and delivers wheel-to-wheel action time and again. But as the buildup begins for the 110th running of this year’s Indianapolis 500 – still the sport’s commercial, spiritual centerpiece and Memorial Day weekend staple – IndyCar is at risk of tripping over itself in its rush to return to prominence. Defying criticisms of ‘slop’ and ‘theft’, the growing culture of AI-powered creativity is attracting interest from Hollywood In a former hemstitching workshop where artisans sewed pleats for Stockholm’s 19th-century bourgeoisie, a distinctly 21st-century craft is taking root: AI film-making. One day last week, an actor, director and composer squeezed into a tiny studio booth to record a voiceover for their next AI release. Critics disparage AI movies as “automated slop” or cheating, and fume at what they claim to be industrial-scale copyright theft. But this had a distinctly homespun feel, the little team fussing over a monologue by a poetic Scottish gorilla inhabiting a transhumanist cyberpunk universe. It was a bit like recording the Archers, one of them joked. Continue reading...

Tom Williams | CQ-Roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images Congress members would be permanently banned from becoming lobbyists after they leave office under a new bipartisan bill, first reported by CNBC. The legislation would not only ban senators and U.S. House members from being registered lobbyists, but would also prevent then from being compensated for trying to influence lawmakers and staff on behalf of companies or groups — closing a loophole that would allow former lawmakers to lobby without being a registered lobbyist. The effort, from Sens. Rick Scott , R-Fla. and Elizabeth Warren , D-Mass., comes as a growing number of lawmakers are speaking out against profiting from their elected positions. Numerous bipartisan bills have been introduced this Congress to ban things like members owning and trading stocks, or banning themselves from betting on prediction markets . "Trust in our institutions is at an all-time low, and the revolving door between Capitol Hill and K Street is a big part of that," Scott said in a statement to CNBC. "We need to restore the American people's trust in their government, and that's why I'm proud to introduce this bipartisan bill to put government clearly back on the side of the people." Scientists Intentionally Trigger 8,000 Earthquakes Deep Beneath Swiss Alps Authored by Steve Watson via Modernity.news, Scientists at ETH Zurich university in Switzerland have deliberately induced around 8,000 seismic events deep underground in the Swiss Alps as part of an experiment called Fault Activation and Earthquake Rupture (FEAR-2). The team injected 750,000 litres of water into the ground via two boreholes over approximately 50 hours at the BedrettoLab facility. The quakes were too small to be felt at the surface or cause damage, with magnitudes ranging from -5 to -0.14. The researcher explained “While some seismic events occurred on the target fault zone, a large number of events took place on neighbouring geological structures activated by the fluid injection.” Uni researchers are making earthquakes happen under the Alps. Okayyy. https://t.co/EXZIYaGmnm — m o d e r n i t y (@ModernityNews) May 12, 2026 Professor Domenico Giardini, one of the lead researchers, stated: “If we master how to produce quakes of a certain size, then we know how not to produce them.” He also noted the advantages of the site: “It is perfect, because we have a kilometer and a half of mountain on top of us… and we can look very close at the faults, how they move, when they move, and we can make them move ourselves.” He doesn’t seem all that worried about the mountains crumbling on top of him. Researchers have made the ground shake in southern Switzerland, triggering thousands of tiny earthquakes in a monitored setting, as they seek to discover seismicity insights that could reduce risks. https://t.co/GLfbtgewPE — The Japan Times (@japantimes) May 12, 2026 Researchers say that the experiment, conducted at the end of April, builds on efforts to better understand earthquake generation processes. They contend that this could support safer deep geothermal energy development in low-permeability reservoirs. ⛰️ Beneath the Swiss Alps, scientists at #BedrettoLab run by ETH Zurich trigger micr...

Elena Iakovleva/iStock via Getty Images Koppers Holdings ( KOP ) released 1Q26 results. The results were good, in line with a positive outlook for the year provided in Q4. Specifically, Performance Chemicals, the company's star segment and the one most pressured last year by new competition, recovered strongly. At the same time, the company is facing several cost headwinds, including oil, lumber, and copper. The end-market segments, mainly housing, are also pressured. Tactically, I believe the downstream situation will be more pressured than what management expects. On a cyclical basis, I also continue to believe Koppers has above-average earnings power. For these reasons, I maintain a Hold rating. 1Q26 results Koppers' results were mixed by segment, but better than I expected. Sales were basically flat, but adjusted EBITDA fell 10% from $56 million to $49 million. However, not all segments saw diminishing profits. The most positive and important data point was PC. This segment had been pressured last year because of new competition and lost volumes. I was concerned that the hit could be more permanent, because PC is Koppers' best business, with higher margins and better structural characteristics than the other segments. However, in 1Q26, PC sales increased almost 20%, and adjusted EBITDA increased almost 30% to $26 million. The segment's volumes improved 15%, from a mix of gaining market share and customer inventory build (as commented in the call ). It is possible that smaller competitors are getting squeezed. The segment's end market (construction activity, mainly wood products), however, is still very pressured. Management confirmed in the call that the most relevant end demand indicators for the business, like mortgage rates, housing turnover, and repair and remodeling spending, are still lagging. The relevant point, therefore, is that the results reduce the probability that the new competitor created a permanent impairment in PC. The segment still looks like ...
