alexsl/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images Anthropic PBC ( ANTHRO ) won a court order blocking a Trump administration ban on government use of its artificial intelligence technology, after arguing the move could cost the company billions in lost revenue. U.S. District Judge Rita F. Lin issued a preliminary injunction on Thursday, halting the administration’s plan to cut ties with Anthropic while the case proceeds in San Francisco federal court. The order was stayed for seven days to allow the government time to appeal. The dispute stems from a Defense Department determination earlier this month that Anthropic posed a threat to the U.S. supply chain, escalating tensions over how the military can use AI tools. Anthropic ( ANTHRO ) had sought assurances its technology would not be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons deployment, while the government cited national security concerns and rejected any restrictions. In her ruling, Lin questioned the basis for the ban, saying it did not appear to serve national security interests. She suggested the measures were aimed at penalizing the company, calling them “classic illegal First Amendment retaliation.” Anthropic ( ANTHRO ) said it welcomed the decision, adding it remains focused on “working productively with the government to ensure all Americans benefit from safe, reliable AI.” The company argues it was excluded from government contracts for its stance on AI safeguards, while the administration has signaled it will continue to pursue efforts to remove Anthropic from federal agencies. Government lawyers said trust is critical in military partnerships and accused Anthropic of undermining that trust during negotiations. The case also extends to a parallel challenge filed in a Washington, D.C., appellate court, where Anthropic claims the Defense Department exceeded its authority with actions that were “arbitrary, capricious and an abuse of discretion.” Anthropic ( ANTHRO ) signed a $200M contract with the United St...
