India is considering a significant reduction in the taxes paid by foreign investors on the nation’s bonds as authorities seek to align policies with global norms and attract inflows, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The Reserve Bank of India recommended the move, which is being seriously considered by the Finance Ministry, the people said, asking not to be identified as the details are private. Deliberations to ease the tax burden have gathered pace as authorities try to curb the rupee’s depreciation, they added. The Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India didn’t respond to emails seeking comment. The rupee reversed losses while bonds gained on the news. The 10-year yield fell as much as five basis points to 7%. Policymakers have so far taken defensive steps to stem the currency’s slide, such as limiting the size of trading positions. Luring capital inflows becomes necessary to help fund a larger import bill as the Iran war raises oil prices. The rupee is Asia’s worst currency performer so far in 2026, down over 6% against the dollar. Overseas buyers have to pay both short-term and long-term capital gain taxes, depending on their jurisdiction. India has agreements with dozens of countries which allows some to benefit from lower rates. Interest income on coupon payments is taxed at around 20%. Foreign investors used to pay just a 5% tax on interest earned, but that dispensation ended in 2023. The feeling so far in 2026 for the stock is positive, considering that YTD, it has practically doubled its market value, and the current silver cycle seems likely to remain active, as I have already discussed in some of my previous articles. So there are few doubts around this point. However, there is something I expect from the results this coming Monday, May 25 , and that is that although the operating numbers are going to be practically the best in the company’s history, with record revenue of $438M (+47% YoY) in a fourth quarter that has grown by around +96%, I almost certainly expect a net loss in GAAP terms. This is already known, and it is not because of the business, but because of the $150M convertible bond , which creates a non-cash accounting charge and grows precisely when the stock rises. Without going any further, in the first nine months of the fiscal year, the company had already accumulated an $118M charge. In other words, with income from mine operations in those nine months of $153M and adjusted net income of $108M, GAAP net income attributable to shareholders came in at -$9.2M.
