The Army will also allow individuals with only one marijuana-related or drug paraphernalia conviction to enlist, among other changes announced in a memo released last week. The last time that the Army raised the maximum enlistment age was in 2006, during the Iraq War. It lowered the age cap back to 35 years a decade later. The latest age cap increase is not tied to the Iran war and has been in the works for months, two people familiar with the decision told ABC News , adding that the move is aimed at widening the recruiting pool. The Air Force and Navy both cap enlistment at 41 years of age. The Marine Corps' recruitment age cap is 28 years, but those who are older can request waivers to enlist. New Army recruits are entering the service with an average enlistment age of 22.7, Army Times reported , compared to 21.7 in the 2000s and 21.1 in the 2010s. Military recruitment had been slowing for years. According to the Army Recruiting Command, 71% of youth do not qualify for military service because of obesity, drugs, physical and mental health problems, misconduct and aptitude. But recruitment rebounded in FY24, after which FY25 saw the best recruiting numbers in 15 years. This was a result of efforts to boost recruiting momentum, such as cutting red tape and speeding up screening processes.
