In the lawsuit filed on Tuesday , Sam Nelson's parents allege ChatGPT "encouraged" the teen to "consume a combination of substances that any licensed medical professional would have recognized as deadly," resulting in his death. Though ChatGPT initially pushed back on conversations about drug and alcohol use, the launch of GPT-4o in April 2024 changed the chatbot's behavior, according to the lawsuit. Following the update, ChatGPT "began to engage and advise Sam on safe drug use, even providing specific do … Read the full story at The Verge.

Gorlov/iStock via Getty Images The CPI read for April came in, and it's as hot as expected, clocking in at 3.8% YoY and 0.6% MoM. The MoM change is hopeful because it's slower than the March print of 0.9%. Of course, since fuel is the largest culprit of the hot print, core CPI doesn't look as bad. It's up too, but still below 3%. BLS April 2026 CPI Report Here's the headline report from the BLS with my highlights: Annotations by author (BLS) First and foremost, fuel was the biggest and most obvious issue. While the global energy crisis still looms—contingent on the U.S.-Iran war continuing—there will likely be no let-up in these prices. Even if peace comes as quickly as it's been promised by the current administration in Washington, it appears that negotiations are still fraught . A continued negotiation that doesn't include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will only serve to worsen fuel prices and cause this figure to grind upwards again in May. In the report, we saw a 28.4% YoY change in gasoline, which was a 5.4% change from just a month ago. Fuel oil at large (including diesel, jet fuel, etc.) is up 54% YoY. We can't get away from these figures in the report; the price of oil is embedded significantly in half of the items in the report at least, if not more. But ultimately, this was a “known” issue—crude oil is the most-watched commodity by the public at the current moment, and for good reason. It means that we shouldn't be surprised at this report coming in hot in this regard. It's the stats that I wasn't quite expecting that I feel we should look at. Understandably, we see regionality on full display right now. I assumed that the ability for a given locality to get gasoline and other fuels would be one of the largest determinates of the inflation rate in a given city, but I'm not so sure of that in this report. I expect that shelter is obscuring this throughline too. Inflation in Seattle and Philadelphia is running at nearly 5%, while it's at 2.8% in Hous...

The Iran war has triggered the largest oil supply disruption in history yet future prices are not that high, which has left some investors wondering why. The answer has to do with the oil balance before the war, the response to the disruption, market expectations and whether the futures price is really the best place to look, Wall Street analysts say. The market has lost nearly 1 billion barrels of oil during the ten weeks that Iran has managed to basically close the Strait of Hormuz, the CEOs of Saudi Aramco and Shell said on their first-quarter earnings calls. Morgan Stanley forecasts the market will lose another billion barrels over the course of 2026 due to the time required to restart oilfields, repair refineries and reposition the tanker fleet. "That this is the largest oil supply disruption in the history of the oil market is neither an exaggeration nor controversial," Martijn Rats, commodities strategist at Morgan Stanley, told clients in a Monday note. Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser and International Energy Agency chief Fatih Birol have described the disruption in the same terms. @LCO.1 3M mountain Brent futures over the past three months Yet the international benchmark Brent futures traded near $108 per barrel Tuesday, while U.S. crude oil futures were just above $101 per barrel. These prices are not that high in historic terms with Brent trading above $100 from 2011 to 2014, Rats said. It hit $130 in March 2022 on the much smaller supply disruption triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he said. "The question oil specialists are scratching their heads over is reasonable: should Brent not be substantially higher?" Rats said. Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan have five reasons why oil prices have not spiked higher. 1. China slashed imports The single biggest reason why oil prices are not higher right now is because seaborne crude imports have plummeted by nearly 10.9 million barrels per day from April 8 to May 8, Rats said. China is by far the biggest player be...

In March, Create Streets, Freewheeling and the Campaign for Better Transport, supported by the RAC Foundation, published the report Towns and Trams , advocating the use of trams to unblock city congestion, as in Vienna. Sadly, the tram scheme for Leeds is on ice until the late 2030s . Continue reading...

Imran Sanaullah of the Adam Foundation says increasing numbers are active within political parties of all hues Taj Ali is right to acknowledge the misconception that British Muslims are disengaged from democracy or operate as a single voting bloc ( Sectarianism? Family voting? No, what British Muslims are doing with their votes is called democracy, 28 April ). The evidence, and our experience working with communities across the UK, suggests the opposite. Muslims in Britain want to vote, and tens of thousands already do so regularly. Polling conducted for the Community Exchange Hub shows levels of political engagement comparable to the wider population, with voters not only following campaigns closely, but also more likely to have direct contact with canvassers during election periods. franckreporter/iStock via Getty Images Wells Fargo strategists are urging investors to “take advantage of euphoric sentiment” by selling call options following a strong first-quarter earnings season and the market’s ( SPY ) ( DIA ) ( QQQ ) recent rebound. In a Tuesday note, the firm highlighted that upside options pricing has become stretched, with three-month, far out-of-the-money Nasdaq 100 ( QQQ ) calls trading near the 100th percentile compared to the past year. This suggests investors are paying a premium for upside exposure. While Wells Fargo maintains its bullish stance on AI ( AIQ ) ( AIEQ ) stocks, strategists see selling calls—or the process of collecting option premium in exchange for giving another trader the right to buy a stock at a set price—as an effective way to monetize the current optimistic sentiment. The firm noted that persistent inflation risk is keeping the Federal Reserve from adopting a more dovish tone quickly, adding caution to the outlook. With the latest CPI report now behind the market, attention shifts to upcoming catalysts, including retail sales data, the Trump-Xi summit in Beijing and Nvidia’s ( NVDA ) May 21 earnings report. Wells Fargo indicated that the Beijing summit could provide support for semiconductor ( SMH ) ( SOX ) stocks if it delivers relief on export controls, while Nvidia remains the clearest single-stock event risk for the AI trade. Notably, the options market isn’t pricing significant fear around upcoming macro events, the note said. Implied S&P 500 ( SPY ) daily moves hover around 0.6% for retail sales, roughly matching the two-year average, while Nvidia’s ( NVDA ) expected move sits higher at about 1.1%. At the time of writing, the S&P was off around 0.8% after the hotter-than-expected inflation data drove up Fed rate-hike bets. leolintang/iStock via Getty Images I'm assigning a 'Buy' rating to ACV Auctions Inc. ( ACVA ), up from a 'Hold' previously. Its 1Q26 earnings exceeded the consensus estimate by a wide margin. The momentum should be sustainable, considering the upbeat management guide and plans for substantial buybacks. ACVA's divergent 4Q25 showing, characterized by above-expectations EBITDA and slower sales growth, was outlined in my earlier February 26, 2026, update . Shares Popped On Earnings Outperformance The group's latest numbers were disclosed in a press release on Wednesday, May 6. ACVA reversed from 4Q25's normalized net loss of $1.1M to register a +$7.3M bottom line for 1Q26. That's 37% better than the sell-side's projection as per S&P Capital IQ data. Its Jan-Mar '26 net profit was still down 2.3% year-on-year. Management's analyst briefing attributed this decline to "severe weather" in "the Northeast, where we have our largest markets." In my opinion, there were several factors contributing to ACVA's first-quarter surprise. The firm's results announcement noted a 3% YoY growth in 1Q2026 "Marketplace Units" to 213k. According to the earnings call, "the dealer wholesale market" witnessed a "mid-single-digit decline" during the same timeframe. I wrote in the late-Feb piece that "ACVA is making reinvestments to realize a higher market share for 2026." It's reasonable for me to assume that the company's efforts have paid off by outpacing the broader industry. An Overview Of Guaranteed Sale Auctions Media Releases The enterprise announced in Aug last year that it had "scaled up its popular No Reserve Sale to four days each week" detailed in the chart above. The move was well-received in my view. This category expanded by over 100% year-over-year in 1Q26. ACVA's CEO indicated at the results meeting that "this offering remains the fastest-growing channel" due to the elimination of "seller market risk." Separately, the rising share of high-margin "Marketplace Services Segment/MS...
