Earnings Call Insights: Bakkt (BKKT) Q1 2026 Management View CEO Akshay Naheta framed the strategy around stablecoin-driven payments, saying, "we are in the early innings of a structural shift in the global payments architecture" and adding that "stablecoin infrastructure cannibalizes legacy rails over the next several years to become the connective tissue between all 3" tiers he outlined. Naheta tied Bakkt’s positioning to regulation and large payment-network investment activity, stating, "Both statutes raised the regulatory bar materially" and that this "is a tailwind for new incumbents who build ahead of the rules." He also cited stablecoin market size trends, including, "stablecoin settlement volume reached approximately $33 trillion in 2025, up 72% from $19 trillion in 2024" and "Cap stabilization is at an all-time high at approximately $320 billion at the quarter end." Naheta introduced a qualitative internal scorecard and highlighted balance sheet and build progress, including, "We have a debt-free balance sheet with $82.6 million of liquidity at the end of the quarter" and said the "agent platform" is "on track for a launch sometime in Q3." On commercial execution, Naheta announced a senior hire: "we'd like to introduce Daniel Ishag, who joins us as the Chief Commercial Officer," adding, "He's leading the rebuild and will be converting our pipeline into actionable revenues." Naheta described a new partnership pathway, stating, "In May, we signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with Zoth," and noted Zoth "currently processes approximately $300 million in annualized total payments volume" with a "partnership target is approximately $1 billion in annualized TPV by the year-end 2026, according to Zoth's projections." He added, "A definitive commercial agreements are expected to follow in due course." CFO Karen Alexander positioned the quarter as a post-divestiture baseline, saying, "The loyalty business divested in October 2025" and that, "Stripped out, ...

South Africa’s rand is shrugging off the threat that President Cyril Ramaphosa may be impeached, reflecting a bet that economic reforms he has championed will endure if he falls. The veteran leader rejected calls to resign during a late-Monday address to the nation, which now waits for the next procedural steps in a saga involving a theft from his farm that surfaced in 2022 and was dramatically resurrected by a court ruling on May 8. The currency is within 0.2 percent of its level against the dollar before the judgment. Its movements look more tied to the Iran war than local politics, where the president leads a centrist coalition known as the government of national unity that investors expected to endure. “The GNU is making good progress, thus supporting the rand,” said Devon Pearman , head of Africa at TP ICAP Group Plc in Johannesburg. “Even if the head changes, the structure remains, providing a degree of stability.” While Ramaphosa’s African National Congress lost its parliamentary majority in 2024 elections, he forged a coalition government that has begun to deliver on promised reforms, winning over investors who previously had shunned South Africa over chronic graft and mismanagement. That’s a big change in the political landscape from four years ago, when the scandal burst into view after the country’s former spy chief accused Ramaphosa of trying to cover up the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars hidden in a sofa on his Phala Phala game farm in 2020. The shift has lessened the sway of left-wingers in the ANC, some of whom have defected to former President Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe party, or MKP, which alongside the radical Economic Freedom Fighters are now the main opposition to the president’s coalition, said Sebastian Holzbach , fixed-income analyst at Northstar Asset Management. GNU Outlook “Parties within the GNU are aware of the risks present should President Ramaphosa be removed,” said Holzbach, citing the possibility of the left flank of th...

allanswart/iStock via Getty Images Japan's three megabanks are likely to continue setting new earnings records as the central bank's monetary policy normalization boosts their margins. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. ( MUFG ), Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. ( SMFG ) and Mizuho Financial Group Inc. ( MFG ) are each expected to report record net income for the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2026, and their earnings may rise further over the following two fiscal years, according to consensus forecasts from Visible Alpha, a part of S&P Global Market Intelligence. SMFG will report full-year earnings on May 13, while MUFG and Mizuho are set to announce their results on May 15. "They [the megabanks] will continue to get a tailwind from rate hikes," said Tsuyoshi Ueno, a senior economist at NLI Research Institute. "But some of them may increase credit cost, given that the continued conflict of the Middle East could put a drag on the economy." MUFG is forecast to report net income of ¥2.262 trillion for the fiscal year ended March 2026 and grow it to ¥2.446 trillion in the following fiscal year and ¥2.788 trillion in the subsequent year, according to Visible Alpha consensus estimates. MUFG's net interest margin is expected to rise from 0.71% to 0.81%, and then to 0.90% over the same period, the estimates show. SMFG's earnings are also expected to rise, with net income projected at ¥1.598 trillion for the fiscal year ended March 31. Net income is forecast to climb further to ¥1.785 trillion and then to ¥1.928 trillion over the next two years. The bank's net interest margin is estimated to increase from 0.85% to 0.95%, and then to 1.0% over the same period. Policy normalization Economists, including Ueno, expect the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to raise its policy rate in June after it kept the rate steady in April. The central bank had hiked by 25 basis points to 0.75% in December 2025, taking the benchmark rate to its highest level in three decades. The December rate hike...

cweimer4/iStock via Getty Images Thesis When the Iran war started in February 2026, anything that was associated with oil got a bid. The direct beneficiaries were outright WTI/Brent funds such as the United States Oil Fund LP ETF ( USO ) and the United States Brent Oil Fund LP ETF ( BNO ), oil and gas extraction and production companies, and MLP funds. FT Energy Income Partners Enhanced Income ETF ( EIPI ) is a covered call MLP fund that we started covering in 2025 with a 'Buy' rating: Prior Rating (Seeking Alpha) We liked the fund for its innovative structure and dividend-oriented approach when it comes to the MLP asset class. In today's article we are going to re-visit EIPI in light of the Iran conflict and highlight why today's prices no longer provide for an attractive entry point into this fund. MLPs have rallied Let us start by looking at how the various segments of the market described above have reacted to the Iran conflict: Data by YCharts Outright oil via futures has done the best, up over 93% year to date. The second-best performance has been recorded by large oil and gas companies, as reflected by the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ), which is up over +25% this year. MLPs come in last, with total returns in excess of +13%. We have used both EIPI and the much better-known fund Alerian MLP ETF ( AMLP ). MLPs are not direct beneficiaries of the war MLPs are tax-advantageous structures/entities that usually operate in the midstream sector. Traditionally, MLPs own and operate infrastructure (such as pipelines, storage tanks, etc.) that is used by energy companies to move product. MLPs make money via a fee structure for the utilization of the infrastructure they own; thus, the fee is usually based on volume and not the value of the underlying. MLPs are very sensitive around minimum volume levels to be structured in their contracts so that they will always get paid a certain amount per year. They value predictability and stability. So when the...
