Global orders for gas turbines will “decline slightly” this year from 2025, but remain strong due to the build-out of data centers, according to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. , a major manufacturer of the equipment used in power plants. Demand would be 70 to 100 gigawatts in 2026, compared with 100 gigawatts last year, Mitsubishi Heavy President Eisaku Ito said on an earnings press conference on Tuesday. Orders will likely to stay around 70 gigawatts annually in the five years through 2030, he said. The company expects “significant order opportunities and inquiries” to continue, Ito said. The artificial intelligence and data center boom has driven demand for turbines as greater electricity consumption leads to the construction of more gas-fired power plants. That’s benefited manufacturers like Mitsubishi Heavy, GE Vernova Inc. and Siemens Energy AG, which together account for more than 70% of the world’s production capacity. Mitsubishi Heavy’s order backlog for its energy segment — which includes gas turbines — rose about 42% to 6.98 trillion yen ($44.3 billion) in the fiscal year through March. The Japanese company was aiming at doubling its turbine capacity in the next two years, Ito said in an interview last September.
