Brighton festival Combining words devised for Shakespeare’s female characters with music from composers old and new this was a Bardic treat with teeth The two groups behind me who (it emerged at the interval) were all expecting a greatest hits concert by 90s pop duo Shakespears Sister , might have been startled by what they got instead: a Shakespeare-themed song recital. But you can hardly move for lovers and their lasses hey-nonny-no-ing their way across the UK’s concert halls these days, and it takes something extra to set one apart. Sophie Bevan and pianist Christopher Glynn found it by combining Shakespeare with speeches from actor Harriet Walter’s 2024 book She Speaks! Walter’s wry, often acerbic, occasionally dagger-wielding verse fills in the gaps where women – whether witches, wives, nurses or ingenues – should speak, but don’t. Paired with a brilliantly unexpected selection of Shakespeare songs, many by female composers, it made for more than a simply pretty recital. Continue reading...

Richard Drury/DigitalVision via Getty Images When CECO Environmental ( CECO ) announced a big deal to acquire Thermon by the end of February, I concluded that the company ended the near-term momentum run. Shares have actually seen a solid recovery, with shares having risen by more than 30% in the time frame of just over two months. This came as the company provided more positive information on the deal, reporting incredibly strong numbers, notably bookings, for the first quarter of the year. This makes me very upbeat on CECO, as shares have gained back all the lost ground, with CECO having become a much better business over time. I am turning more upbeat about the business with other serial growth plays picked up in greater coverage at Value in Corporate Events . Better News CECO reported a solid set of first-quarter results by the end of April. While revenues were up "just" 17% to $205.9 million, CECO reported a truly impressive 97% increase in orders to $449.5 million, for a book-to-bill ratio far exceeding 2 times, in fact, reported at 2.2 times. This added to a backlog, which rose by 72% to $1.03 billion, driven by tremendous global investments in electrical power demand for data centers and artificial intelligence, among others, notably relating to natural gas installations. The company reported GAAP operating income of just $1.9 million for the quarter; that is after a more than $4 million amortization charge and $10 million in acquisition-related charges, among others. This resulted in GAAP losses of a penny, with adjusted earnings reported at $0.36 per share, with these adjusted earnings looking quite reasonable, in what typically is the softest quarter for the year. Net debt is reported at $208 million, of course, ahead of the Thermon deal. Comforting is that the full-year guidance has been hiked, driven by the strong order intake. Revenues are now seen between $940 million and a billion, at the midpoint seen around $970 million. The midpoint of the guidanc...
