French inflation will quicken to match the European Central Bank ’s 2% goal in April as oil prices surge due to the fighting in the Middle East, the national statistics agency said. Price increases in the euro area’s second-largest economy were running well below target until the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Insee now expects a rebound to 2.2% by June, having previously only forecast 1.6%. Policymakers are watching carefully for signs of price pressures taking hold in Europe as energy costs soar. Earlier Tuesday, Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau said the ECB is responsible for avoiding second-round effects and is well positioned to do so if necessary. Still, Insee economist Dorian Roucher said the agency doesn’t expect a pass-through of higher prices in its short-term outlook. He said the situation isn’t comparable to 2022, when pre-existing supply constraints added to energy-driven inflation pressure. “We think transmission will be a bit less quick than what we saw before, although that’s just until June and based on what we know now,” Roucher said. The statistics agency also trimmed its growth forecasts to 0.2% for the first and second quarters from 0.3% previously. Growth in annual gross domestic product takes a hit of 0.4 points for every $40 dollar increase in the oil price, its models suggest. Android Automotive in a Volvo EX90 | Image: Volvo Google announced a new version of its Android Automotive open-source operating system for software-defined vehicles. Whereas previously Android Automotive operated exclusively in the car's infotainment system, Google is now expanding its "open infrastructure" to the non-safety parts of the car's internal computer system. As cars have swiftly become "computers on wheels," there is still a lot of fragmentation in the industry, with many car manufacturers using different, mismatched software modules from dozens of different suppliers. Google wants to solve this fragmentation problem by - what else? - becoming the de facto software provider fo … Read the full story at The Verge.
