mizoula/iStock Editorial via Getty Images The New York Times ( NYT ) reported Q1'26 results this week, and the market liked what it saw for the most part. Immediately following the results, investors were pushing the stock up roughly 9% to around $84 before the stock gave up some of the gains the following day. Overall, the quarter was strong with numbers that were above sell-side estimates, digital advertising growing, and decent strong subscriber numbers. That said, my issue with the company is that at $80 per share, the stock is now trading at almost 30x earnings for a business where revenue growth is expected to slow to 7% in 2027, subscriber growth is decelerating from its peak, and costs are rising faster than the organic business. A Look at Q1'26 Results When looking at the latest quarterly results from NYT, the company posted revenue of $712.2 million , grew 12.0% year over year, and beat the $700.3 million consensus by nearly $12 million . EPS of $0.61 came in well ahead of the $0.47 estimate, which was good enough for a 30% beat. EBITDA of $111.2 million clocked in at a 15.6% margin, and operating margin expanded to 12.7% from 9.2% in Q1'25. Management attributed this to strong marketer demand and an expanded supply of premium advertising inventory. That's worth pointing out given that digital advertising across the broader media industry has been under pressure. In my view, I think this highlights that the company has been taking some small share in premium digital advertising and the company's first-party subscriber data and premium content are differentiators in a programm...
