The dollar fell against most of its major peers Thursday after key central banks flagged the risk of an inflationary shock amid the intensifying Middle East conflict. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index slumped as much as 0.6%, on track for its biggest drop against the pound in almost two months. DragonImages/iStock via Getty Images In October last year, I had written around how the lines are more blurred than we think, when it comes to choosing a more upside-friendly Goldman Sachs S&P 500 Premium Income ETF ( GPIX ) over SPYI. I had ultimately concluded with a Strong Buy for GPIX, but also mentioned SPYI is also a Buy and a good income portfolio combines both given the active levers that could tilt performance in both. Since then, the bull market has ceased to show the same momentum and we are now looking at potentially a year when markets remain under pressure. In such conditions, the lines between GPIX and SPYI remain blurred as shown in terms of total returns and drawdown mitigation versus the underlying vehicle, the S&P 500. Data by YCharts GPIX's theoretically superior positioning was based on a partially covered portfolio (ranging between 25-75%). That becomes less of an advantage in these markets. The long term portfolio does not need to react to this regime, but those who are positioning themselves tactically for the next year or so could now consider less of GPIX than originally indicated. Additionally, GPIX's upside capture thesis has also not worked out like it has in the past (in the data we have for the past 5 months). This warrants a monitoring whether GPIX is losing its upside edge over peers. Overall, GPIX is still a Buy, but I am downgrading it a notch simply because of the market regime we are in and acknowledging some signs of a declining edge the theory promised. Market Outlook and Expectations Since GPIX's relatively less bullish short term thesis depends on markets staying under pressure, it is important to lay out why I believe markets will be broadly flat to negative over the next few quarters. The Chinese founder of the massive router maker facing national security probes by the Trump administration has applied for an expedited visa under the Trump Gold Card programme, according to people familiar with the matter. California-based TP-Link Systems told the federal agencies scrutinising its operations that founder and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Chao had applied for permanent residency under the programme, the people said. Successful Gold Card applicants must give a US$1 million “unrestricted gift” to the Commerce Department in exchange for a visa. Wall Street is in the middle of a dealmaking cycle that promises plenty more transformational mergers, according to the head of M&A at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. , who said companies are now well-versed in navigating volatility. Stephan Feldgoise said he’s seeing almost double the amount of deals in the $5 billion to $10 billion range, a trend he said mirrored M&A cycles of the early 2000s and 2010s. “The numbers are pretty staggering,” he said at Tulane University ’s Corporate Law Institute in New Orleans on Thursday. “It feels like we’re in a second, third, fourth year of what generally feels like a five, six, seven-year cycle.” The Goldman Sachs banker’s optimism is being tested by a first quarter that has brought a technology selloff, writedowns in private credit and an escalating Middle East war that’s creating significant inflationary pressures and threatening economic growth.
