War shows little sign of easing despite Donald Trump claiming Iranian leadership ‘just asked’ for ceasefire Israel unleashed two waves of attacks on Tehran and said it had killed a senior Hezbollah commander on Wednesday with little sign of the war easing up despite Donald Trump repeating a claim that Iran’s leadership was seeking a ceasefire. The US president, writing on social media, said that Iran’s president had “just asked” for a ceasefire, and that American troops would be “out of Iran pretty quickly”, as he sought to extricate the US from the war. However, he confused the picture by incorrectly describing the president as a “new regime” leader. Continue reading...
Melbourne cafe owner Michael Hannah looks over the half-empty lunchtime tables and frets how much worse things will be when the state government enshrines a world-first right to work-from-home later this year. “Not only us as a cafe gets affected; you have a gym that had 3,000 members shut down, it affects the 7-Eleven, it affects the chemist, it affects anything you can see here,” Hannah said. “Y...
“You look at this now and you think, are we in the city?” Australia’s second-most populous city endured some of the world’s longest and strictest lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic and has been slow to recover as employees accustomed to working from home defy attempts to get them back to CBD offices. The city, home to miners BHP Group Ltd. and Rio Tinto Ltd. and lenders National Australia Bank Ltd. and ANZ Group Holdings Ltd., has the highest office vacancy rate among the nation’s capital cities. From September, new laws will give all workers who can the right to work from home two days a week. While Victorian state Premier Jacinta Allan — who faces an election in November — says the change will give employees the flexibility to juggle work-life balance and save money on fuel and childcare, business groups have slammed the move, arguing it will drive companies out of the state and drag on an economy straining under a growing pile of debt. “It’s not necessary or warranted,” said Scott Veenker, chief executive officer of the Committee for Melbourne , which advocates for businesses in the city. “It’s just an added layer of complexity. The proposed legislation gives businesses a reason to consider if they should continue operating in Victoria.” The pandemic transformed the workplace seemingly overnight — sending hundreds of millions of people around the world to work from their study or kitchen table — a hybrid working set-up many employees are keen to stick with. However, companies have been pushing to get employees back to the office more regularly, arguing it is better for...

Thomas Nuehnen/iStock via Getty Images After a massive surge in egg pricing throughout 2025 driven by supply disruptions, Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. ( CALM ) stock enjoyed a significant run-up that we believed was borrowing from future gains. We cautioned that as the national hen flock recovered, a pricing reset was inevitable. While the stock has shown some resilience lately, the just-reported fiscal Q3 2026 results confirm that the peak of the cycle is firmly in the rearview mirror. Shares have fluctuated on the news of a bottom-line beat, but we believe the massive drop in top-line revenue suggests the stock may still be ahead of itself. Having traded this stock through multiple cycles of avian influenza and commodity spikes, we can tell you it remains a classic trading vehicle subject to violent swings. We suspect the next meaningful move is lower as the market continues to price in normalized margins. Longer term, management is doing the right things by diversifying into prepared foods and specialty eggs, which should theoretically smooth out the earnings volatility. However, at the current valuation, the stock remains a better trading name than a long-term buy and hold in our opinion. It appears cheap, but that is only if margins can hold up, and that largely depends on where egg pricing goes. As such are have a Hold rating here and suspect the nearer-term direction is sideways. The fiscal Q3 results show a company successfully pivoting its product mix, but one that is still being hammered by a collapse in conventional egg prices. Let us discuss. Cal-Maine Foods Fiscal Q3 sales and volumes The company reported net sales of $667 million, an eye-popping 53% drop from the $1.4 billion seen in the same quarter last year. This decline was almost entirely driven by a 72.1% collapse in conventional egg revenue. While the top line was poor, things were actually better than expected as analyst sentiment and expectations were very beaten down. The company actually beat conse...

Intel has agreed to repurchase the 49% stake in its Ireland-based microchip factory it sold to Apollo Global Management for $14.2 billion. The buyback gives Intel the full benefit of revenue from the factory as AI-driven demand for advanced microchips sends pricing higher. It also gives a big windfall to Apollo and the debt investors who backed the deal.

imaginima/iStock via Getty Images Algonquin Power & Utilities ( AQN ) up 1.9% in Wednesday's trading as Barclays initiated coverage of the Canadian utility company with an Overweight rating and a US$7 price target, saying the stock trades at a discount vs. peers despite a materially improved balance sheet, a refocused pure-play regulatory strategy, and a strong management team. Algonquin's ( AQN ) lowering of its FY 2027 earnings guidance on its Q4 earnings call was driven largely by previously conservative tax assumptions and temporary gas safety measures, not a deterioration in its underlying regulatory earnings power, Barclays analysts Michael Lonegan and Nicholas Campanella said. Management has articulated multiple levers to claw back the reset earnings over time, including tax optimization, earned return on equity improvement, cost discipline, and regulatory recovery of gas operational excellence costs, Lonegan and Campanella wrote. As billing accuracy and customer service improve—particularly at Empire Electric—regulatory confidence should build and enhance ROEs further, according to the analysts, who also see additional potential upside in several areas, including a possible hydro asset monetization, tax optimization or a re-domiciling scenario, and longer-dated potential from data center-driven load growth in southern Missouri once credibility is fully restored. Every weekday, the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer releases the Homestretch — an actionable afternoon update, just in time for the last hour of trading on Wall Street. Stocks are rallying for the second straight session on optimism around an off-ramp to the war in the Middle East. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social early Wednesday that Iran's "New Regime President" asked for a ceasefire, but the U.S. is pushing for a complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the vital oil waterway. But at the same time, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday that Amazon's cloud computing operation in Bahrain was damaged by an Iranian strike. That comes on the heels of Iran's Revolutionary Guard threatening to attack U.S. tech companies with Middle East operations. We should get a better sense of the war's timeline Wednesday night, as Trump is scheduled to address the nation at 9 p.m. ET. The wait is over, and a new chapter in the GLP-1 boom is here. Eli Lilly announced that the Food and Drug Administration has approved its once-daily GLP-1 pill for obesity. The drug, which carries the active ingredient orforglipron, will be marketed under the name Foundayo. Lilly said Foundayo will be made available through its online LillyDirect program, with prescriptions accepted immediately and shipping starting April 6. Broader availability in the U.S. through retail pharmacies and telehealth providers will follow shortly thereafter. In an anticipation of FDA approval, Lilly built up a stockpile of Foundayo to ensure it has plenty of supply to meet what's expected to be strong demand. After injectable GLP-1s soared in popularity in recent years, the introduction of oral versions is seen as a way to expand the market to needle-adverse patients. They could also play an important role as a maintenance therapies for people who started on weekly injectables. Lilly had guided for a second-quarter launch, and we are pleased to see this happen within the first week of the quarter, r...
