CENTCOM Via X Via Reuters The U.S. military said it struck two Iran-flagged unladen oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, preventing the vessels from entering an Iranian port in violation of a U.S. naval blockade. A U.S. fighter jet "disabled both tankers after firing precision munitions into their smokestacks," U.S. Central Command said in a statement, which included unclassified video of both strikes. The attack was the latest in a number of military actions this week that have further undermined the U.S.'s tattered ceasefire with Iran, even as President Donald Trump insists the temporary truce remains in effect. A sign displays fuel prices at a Shell gas station in downtown San Diego, California, US, on Monday, May 4, 2026. Ariana Drehsler | Bloomberg | Getty Images Surging gas prices due to the Iran war sent consumer sentiment to a new low in the early part of May, according to a University of Michigan survey Friday. The school's closely watched Survey of Consumers posted a 48.2 preliminary reading, down 3.2% from April's prior record swoon and off 7.7% from a year ago. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for 49.7. Inflation fears were the primary driver of the continued trend lower in consumer attitudes. The trend, which also saw the current conditions index tumble 9%, is "owing to a surge in concerns about high prices both for personal finances as well as buying conditions for major purchases," survey director Joanne Hsu said. One-third of respondents mentioned gas prices as the biggest cause of concern. However, another one-third also cited tariffs — both connected to President Donald Trump, who launched an attack on Iran in late-February and announced an aggressive slate of tariffs in April 2025. "Taken together, consumers continue to feel buffeted by cost pressures, led by soaring prices at the pump," Hsu said. "Middle East developments are unlikely to meaningfully boost sentiment until supply disruptions have been fully resolved and energy prices fall." There were a couple modest bright sides in the survey. The expectations index came in at 48.5, a 0.8% increase from April and up 1.3% from a year ago. Also, the inflation outlook actually eased a bit though still at elevated levels, with the one-year projection at 4.5% and the five-year at 3.4%, respectively down 0.2 percentage point and 0.1 percentage point from prior readings. Stock indexes held positive after the release. The survey was released just after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that job creation was stronger than expected in April, with nonfarm payrolls rising by 115,000 and the unem...

Hello FOIA Files readers! I’m repeating my mantra: Always. Appeal. Your FOIA denials. In March 2022, I submitted a request for a copy of an inspector general report from the Department of Defense about an undersea surveillance system that dates back to the beginning of the Cold War. The IG’s FOIA office denied my request, stating that the entire report was classified. I immediately appealed, instructing the agency that it had to segregate material that could be publicly released and account for the foreseeable harm that would result if the report was disclosed. It took about four years, but I won and recently received a heavily redacted copy of the report . If you’re not already getting FOIA Files in your inbox, sign up here . The IG’s March 28, 2022 report, Evaluation of the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System Capabilities , assessed whether the program was capable of responding to anti-submarine warfare. The review was conducted between May 2019 and August 2021. The 55-page report is filled with black boxes that the watchdog’s office said protects classified national security information, such as military plans, weapons systems, foreign relations or foreign activities of the US, confidential sources and vulnerabilities or capabilities of systems, installations, infrastructures, projects and plans. That’s a lot of information being kept under wraps! So let’s drill down on what the report reveals and how it’s relevant today. At the time it was finalized, according to the unredacted section, the Navy’s undersea surveillance network struggled to keep up with a return to heightened tensions among world powers and had to contend with a government bureaucracy slow to implement recommended fixes. Cold War roots First, some background. In 1950, the Office of Naval Research funded efforts to build an undersea surveillance system that could detect and track Soviet submarines. The program that emerged was given the then-classified name Sound Surveillance System, or SOSUS,...

Meindert van der Haven/iStock via Getty Images Introduction As smaller regional and local banks have a higher risk profile, I need to keep an eye on them on a more regular basis to ensure they don’t run into any issues. Last year, I had a closer look at Kansas-based Landmark Bancorp ( LARK ) as I liked its low loan loss provisions and robust earnings profile. And as the bank only paid out a low percentage of its earnings, the retained earnings should allow it to grow its balance sheet. That’s exactly what happened, and although the balance sheet grew by 2% on a year-over-year basis, the total amount of assets recently stabilized while the equity on the balance sheet continued to increase to a current level whereby equity represents 10% of the total asset base. Data by YCharts A strong set of financial results in the first quarter - despite a fraud-related loss In the first quarter of this financial year, Landmark Bancorp saw its interest income increase by approximately 5%, and as its interest expenses decreased by almost 15%, the net interest income increased by approximately 15% to $15M. As a local bank, Landmark mainly relies on its net interest income to fuel its bottom line result. Although it does generate almost $3.8M in non-interest income (mainly thanks to fees and the gain on the sale of loans), the $11.9M in non-interest expenses have increased as well, compared to the first quarter of last year. LARK Investor Relations As the income statement above shows, the "other expenses" increased by about half a million, and the majority of this increase could be explained by the $0.43M fraud losses related to fraudulent activity by an officer of the bank. This should be a non-recurring item, so I’m not too worried about it in the greater scheme of things, but I do hope the bank continues to improve its fraud detection system to avoid similar issues in the future. After all the dust settles, the pre-tax and pre-provision income was approximately $6.9M, and after ta...

The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) has supercharged the semiconductor industry in recent years. That isn't surprising, as chips are the basic building blocks of AI applications. From training AI models to running inference applications to storing and moving data, chips are essential at every step of the AI lifecycle. Simply put, there won't be any large language models (LLMs) or AI software to boost productivity in the absence of semiconductors, which explains why the PHLX Semiconductor Sector index's 273% gain over the past three years has obliterated the 78% jump in the S&P 500 index. The good news for investors is that AI chips remain in high demand to support the build-out of AI data center infrastructure and edge hardware. Market research firm Gartner projects that the semiconductor industry's revenue could grow by 64% in 2026 to $1.32 trillion. That's why it is a good time to buy some top semiconductor stocks , and here are three to consider now. Continue reading
