I got some slight pushback when I voiced concern that clips could eat into podcast listening time, and I feel increasingly confident that people are indeed becoming a clips audience rather than full-time viewers or listeners. The Daily Wire laid off staff last week, as confirmed to me by a spokesperson who declined to specify numbers. Speculation has varied widely online after former DW host Candace Owens suggested more than 50% of the staff was impacted. In response, Jeremy Boreing, who is DW’s former co-chief executive officer, posted a video saying the real number was nowhere near that figure. Companies such as Copa Holdings and Nova reporting earnings next week have a track record of beating Wall Street's expectations. After the frenzy of the past two weeks, earnings season will take a breath in the next few days. Just eight stocks in the S & P 500 and one component in the Dow Jones Industrial Average are due to post results. The first-quarter earnings season has been very strong so far. Of the more than 420 S & P 500 companies that have reported, nearly 85% have posted earnings beats, FactSet data shows. Around 78% have released revenues that exceeded expectations. Stocks can get a boost if their reports or guidance for future performance impresses investors. CNBC Pro screened data from Bespoke Investment Group to find companies that historically beat earnings expectations and see their shares gain on those numbers. To be included in the following table, companies had to have beaten analysts' consensus earnings per share at least 70% of the time and average a gain of 1% or more the first day after posting their latest financials. Copa reports earnings next Wednesday, and the stock on average has risen 1.9% following each report. Last month, Goldman Sachs upgraded the Latin American airline carrier to buy from neutral. "We highlight the company operates at the lowest leverage within our coverage and has a geographical competitive advantage which should allow the company to withstand the current macroeconomic volatility and pass-through higher fuel prices to tickets with potentially lower impact to demand vis-à-vis other competitors in the region," wrote analyst Joao Frizo. Frizo's new price target of $151, up from $138, implies upside of about 23% from current levels. The stock has added 2% this year. Semiconductor manufacturing parts provider Nova reports earnings Thursday. Shares have on average risen 1.6% after the stock has reported earnings. OpenAI is launching an optional safety feature for ChatGPT that allows adult users to assign an emergency contact for mental health and safety concerns. Friends, family members, or caregivers designated as a "Trusted Contact" will be notified if OpenAI detects that a person may have discussed topics like self-harm or suicide with the chatbot. "Trusted Contact is designed around a simple, expert-validated premise: when someone may be in crisis, connecting with someone they know and trust can make a meaningful difference," OpenAI said in its announcement. About two-thirds of S&P 500 companies have reported their quarterly results this earnings season. And so far, those results have been very good, a highly positive signal for share prices. According to FactSet, which tracks S&P 500 earnings, 84% of companies that have reported results have come in above earnings-per-share (EPS) estimates. That's significantly higher than the 10-year average of 76%. And if the remaining companies post similar numbers, resulting in 84% of all companies reporting better-than-expected earnings, it will be the highest percentage of S&P companies beating earnings since the second quarter of 2021. "Stunning Quarter": Highest Earnings Growth In Over Two Decades Yesterday, Deutsche Bank's head of thematic research published his latest chartbook, "The Great 2026 Reset," which delves into the market and political implications of the Iran conflict ( available here to pro subs ). One key topic explored by Reid is the remarkable US Q1 earnings season. As we previewed ahead of the start of reporting seasons, earnings are significantly exceeding consensus estimates across all metrics, despite a high bar. S&P 500 earnings growth is projected to accelerate sharply from 13.4% in Q4 to 24.6% in Q1 – a four-year high and a level rarely seen outside of post-shock recoveries. Excluding special factors, this represents arguably the strongest earnings growth in two decades. The AI boom is a clear contributor, but strength is widespread, with double-digit growth seen in average and median companies, and all 11 sectors posting positive growth for the first time in four years. This strong performance has in many places been driven by higher prices amid supply constraints, surging demand within the AI value chain, and other disruptions. In light of these robust Q1 results, DB has raised its 2026 EPS forecast from $320 to $342, driven by strong Q1 beats, gravity-defying performance in MCG & Tech, and higher oil and commodity prices. Reid says it's worth noting that while the US equity market has outperformed many markets since the start of the Iran conflict, this has only moved it from the bottom quartile to the middle of the global pack year-to-date. Even with a surge since the conflict began, tech performance over the past six months (since the end of October) shows only a modest increase. Given current high valuations, strong earnings growth is helping the US market "grow into" these valuations, yet other markets have demonstrated notably better performance over the last 18 months.
