Douglas Rissing/iStock via Getty Images The April FOMC meeting delivered a familiar outcome on the surface, with the Federal Reserve opting to hold rates steady for a third consecutive meeting, but the underlying message was far more nuanced. A shift in the Fed’s inflation assessment, combined with rising energy prices and an unusual number of dissents, revealed a Committee that is becoming less comfortable with the idea that easing is the natural next step. While the official stance remains unchanged, the tone of the statement and the discussion around it suggest that the path forward is becoming more uncertain, with risks to inflation once again taking center stage. Notably, these dynamics stand in contrast to the more dovish implications often associated with the incoming Fed Chair, Kevin Warsh, highlighting that the broader Committee may not be aligned with an easier policy path. Decision Federal Reserve The Federal Reserve has once again opted to leave the target range of the federal funds rate unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75% at the conclusion of the April 2026 FOMC meeting. This is the third consecutive pause following the 75 bps worth of cuts that occurred across the final three meetings in 2025. And for a second time, the decision to keep rates unchanged was nearly unanimous except for one dissent, Governor Miran preferring a quarter-point cut. Federal Reserve However, that was not the only dissent. Today’s announcement noted the dissent of three of the presidents of the regional Federal Reserve branches, Beth Hammack (FRB of Cleveland), Neel Kashkari (FRB of Minneapolis), and Lorie Logan (FRB of Dallas), who “did not support inclusion of an easing bias in the statement at this time.” This objection seems to refer specifically to the statement “In considering the extent and timing of additional adjustments…” which suggests the next rate move will be a cut. The message here is clear: these three members of the voting committee did not think it was appropriate to ...

Keir Starmer ’s governing Labour Party is set to lose 1,850 seats in a crunch set of local elections next week, according to analysis by an expert in UK local voting signaling an outcome that may put the premier’s position in peril. With the Tories also set to shed 600 councilors, the main beneficiaries are set to be Nigel Farage ’s Reform UK, gaining 1,550 seats, and the Greens winning some 500, according to Robert Hayward , a Conservative peer who specializes in studying local voting. Some 5,000 council seats are up for grabs in the local elections on May 7, with voting also taking place for the Scottish Parliament and its Welsh equivalent, the Senedd. Public opinion surveys have long indicated Labour is heading for big losses, but Hayward’s projections provide a guide to the sheer scale of defeat the governing party and its deeply unpopular leader face. Read More: Labour’s Lowest Ebb in Century in Wales Poses Peril for Starmer “This is bad news for Sir Keir and Labour,” Hayward said in e-mailed comments, referencing a Sunday Times report that an unnamed cabinet minister had said more than 1,500 losses would lead to a cabinet revolt. “The losses will be nationwide.” Less than two years after securing a landslide general election victory for Labour, Starmer’s leadership of the party is already under pressure following a series of policy reversals, missteps and questions about the judgment he showed in appointing the since-fired Peter Mandelson as his US ambassador. Read More: Wounded Starmer Limps on to Meet His Fate at Elections Next Week There is a growing expectation in Westminster that Starmer could face a leadership challenge if the local election results are particularly bad. Bloomberg reported at the weekend that Starmer’s rivals for the top job — who include former deputy premier Angela Rayner and Health Secretary Wes Streeting — think a “perfect storm” of events is needed to bring him down, including what they described as an “emotional” reaction to the lo...

Microsoft's modest increase in quarterly cloud revenue growth on Wednesday failed to impress investors worried about rising competition in the artificial intelligence race, and its shares fell more than 2% in extended trading. Smaller rival Google Cloud posted a 63% rise in revenue that blew past estimates for 50.1% growth. "With Google blowing past revenue and earnings expectations, and big questions around Microsoft’s spending on AI infrastructure, the market wanted to be wowed to be reassured, and the numbers didn’t deliver," said Rebecca Wettemann, CEO of Valoir, an industry analyst firm.
Amazon said that revenue from its Amazon Web Services cloud unit rose 28% from the prior year to $37.6 billion. Revenue growth there is key as investors look for proof that companies are seeing returns on their massive artificial intelligence spending. CEO Andy Jassy noted in the earnings release that it was AWS’s fastest growth in 15 quarters.
