After reducing guidance in early January to 1.6 million to 1.7 million ounces for the year to June, the company said on Friday it would struggle to reach the lower end of that range. Northern Star’s operational issues have challenged the firm after a huge run-up in its shares last year as gold rallied to records, aiding producers. In addition, bullion has failed to benefit from the outbreak of war in the Middle East, with prices set for the first back-to-back weekly loss since November. “It remains the case that the company faces significant ongoing operational challenges, particularly given the difficulty of maintaining throughput at required levels through the existing mill at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines,” Northern Star said in a filing, referring to the plant in Western Australia. The mill crushes ore from the company’s Fimiston open-pit mine, known as the Super Pit, and the Fimiston and Mt Charlott underground mines. The problems at the mill led to lower-than-expected sales over the first two months of the year, Northern Star said. The company is also facing separate issues at its Jundee mine north of Kalgoorlie. There would be a review of the project to cut costs, which may include redeploying staff and equipment to other sites, it said.
