Attacks on tankers and energy infrastructure across the Gulf have continued to pile up, raising the number to 16 (with 6 of them on March 11), while oil markets are once again pricing in the risk of a prolonged supply shock. At the time of writing, Brent is back in the mid-$90s after dropping to $80 on Tuesday. I find it quite impressive that this increase occurred despite the IEA release of 400 million barrels from emergency reserves, with the United States contributing 172 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The fear of inflation is high on both sides of the Atlantic and the Pacific. In Europe, policymakers are beginning to acknowledge that a sustained rise in oil prices could once again complicate the inflation outlook and delay any confidence around easier policy. Bear in mind the ECB hasn't cut since June 2025. In Japan, the concern may be even more severe given the country’s heavy dependence on Middle Eastern energy imports (95% of imported oil) and its direct exposure to disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. With 70% of Japan’s imported oil passing through this strait, I think Japan is the prime example right now for how an external energy shock can feed into domestic prices, raise inflation expectations, and push central banks to maintain a hawkish stance for longer.
