It's the fourth straight month that the print has exceeded the 50 mark, which indicates expansion. Meanwhile, the overall U.S. economy has expanded for 18 consecutive months. Manufacturing prices, new orders, and supplier deliveries strengthened in April, while employment weakened. "In April, U.S. manufacturing activity remained in expansion territory, growing at the same pace as the month before," Susan Spence, chair of ISM's Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said. "Of the five subindexes that make up the PMI , the New Orders and Supplier Deliveries indexes indicated faster growth compared to the previous month, the Production Index grew at a slower rate, and the Employment and Inventories indexes remained in contraction." In the manufacturing economy, 19% of the sector's gross domestic product contracted in April, compared with 16% in March, she added. The percentage of manufacturing GDP in strong contraction fell to 2% from 4% in March. Manufacturing prices: 84.6 vs. 78.3 in March. Employment: 46.4 vs. 48.7 prior. New orders: 54.1 vs. 53.5 prior. Supplier deliveries: 60.6 vs. 58.9 prior. MonumentalDoom/iStock via Getty Images TMC the metals company ( TMC ) up 5.3% in early trading Friday after saying the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration determined the company's application for an exploration license and commercial recovery permit is in full compliance with the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act. The consolidated application now moves into the certification stage of the review process, followed by a draft environmental impact statement for the TMC ( TMC ) project that will be published for public comment; after the EIS is finalized, the NOAA will make a final determination on whether to issue the license and permit, a process the company expects to conclude before the end of Q1 2027. TMC's ( TMC ) consolidated application covers a ~65K sq km exploration and commercial recovery area in the Clarion Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean, up from a commercial recovery area of ~25K sq km in the company’s initial application from April 2025; the area contains an estimated resource of 619M metric tons of wet nodules and potential exploration upside of an additional 200M tons. To get Industrial Strength delivered directly to your inbox, sign up here . The airplane manufacturing industry is effectively a duopoly split between Boeing Co. and Airbus SE. There are less than a handful of major commercial engine suppliers globally. The world’s two largest jet lessors combined in 2021. But good luck trying to combine two airlines that aren’t on life support. Deal speculation has hit a fever pitch in recent weeks as a doubling of jet fuel prices on the war in Iran threatens to unleash a wave of disruptions and blow a hole in carriers’ balance sheets. The biggest and most extreme option proposed so far is the potential merger with American Airlines Group Inc. that was pitched by United Airlines Holdings Inc. Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby. Officially, Kirby said this week that he’s shelving the merger because of a lack of engagement from American but he argued the combination would have created a more globally competitive airline, boosted the US economy and given a larger number of customers access to a nicer travel experience (free Wi-Fi, roomier overhead bins and screens on every seat) on more routes. “In the past, airline mergers usually have been about two struggling airlines coming together to cut costs, flights and headcount,” Kirby wrote in a statement this week. “My aspirations could not be more different. The bold idea I wanted to pursue was about growth.” It’s a radical idea — and maybe a bad one in an industry already infamous for poor customer experiences and rocky merger integrations. But there’s also some truth here: With a few exceptions, most of the major airline takeovers have happened during times of stress and that might have something to do with their bad reputation. President Donald Trump was cool to the idea of a United-American merger, saying the companies seem to be doing fine on their own. That’s the point, though. To build a truly strong airline industry, rescues can’t be the only deals that get done. Read More: Worr...

There’s the endless collection of chargers and wires, the overflowing “everything drawer” in the kitchen, the tote bag of tote bags. Clutter is not a character flaw. It is, more often than not, a conversation your home is having with you about something deeper. As an integrative therapist, I regularly hear that conversation. Clutter rarely arrives as just a tidying problem. It carries anxiety, grief, identity, shame and transition. Understanding what lies beneath is often the first step to being free of it.
