A new campaign is aiming to collect 50 objects that sum up Englishness in an effort to move the conversation away from reductive arguments over whether to hang a St George’s flag or not. Supported by the Green party politician Caroline Lucas, the musician and campaigner Billy Bragg, and Kojo Koram, a law professor, the A Very English Chat campaign hopes to tackle England’s growing social divisions and political polarisation by encouraging people to share the five objects that define their Englishness in 2026. Cultural artefacts might be objects, places, people or even anecdotes. Contributions also include music, food and nature; anything that captures people’s feelings around, stories of and affinities – or lack thereof – with England. Olivier Le Moal/iStock via Getty Images Onto Innovation ( ONTO ), a supplier of equipment for semiconductor manufacturing and packaging, managed to soar higher in past months, especially at the start of 2026. This has resulted in a stock that is worth twice as much as before the rally, even though the stock has pulled back more recently. Moreover, there is something to be gleaned from the recent price action, especially in terms of where the stock reversed course. In fact, there are several reasons why the risk for ONTO could be skewed to the downside, certainly in the wake of the huge rally of the past year. ONTO looks to have encountered resistance in the charts A previous article from April 2024 written by myself mentioned how the stock price had rallied higher thanks in large part to investor enthusiasm for potential AI plays, which caused ONTO to come close to almost quadrupling in market cap at the time. On paper, the AI boom ought to increase demand for semiconductors, which works in favor of a supplier of equipment needed to manufacture those chips like ONTO. Yet the rally stood in contrast to earnings results from ONTO, which had actually gotten worse, something that could put the rally in the stock at risk if there was no change. The death of Ian Huntley is, perhaps, a moment to pause and remember, and not to dwell on the manner and circumstances of his killing. August 2002 is the time to return to, and the place is Soham: a pretty Cambridgeshire village that few outside the county, and possibly many within it too, knew much about before that summer. Before it happened. Two young girls go missing on a Sunday evening. It’s still light and warm. Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman are 10 years old, best friends and having a great time. It’s a lovely day, there’s a barbecue. They are inseparable – chatting, playing at each other’s homes, listening to music, eating sweets. They disappear sometime after 6pm. As the evening closes in, their parents start to worry. Sharon and Leslie Chapman and Kevin and Nicola Wells call each other. It’s getting late – are they with you? And with a rising sense of panic, they call the police at just before 10pm. Most inquiries of this kind end quickly. The girls are found. They were at a friend’s house, watching TV or walking around the village. They had lost track of time. There was no such easy explanation in this case, no moment of angry relief from their mums and dads when they popped their heads round the door. They really had gone. Over the coming days the focus of the police, the media and the country turned slowly and then more frantically to this village, and to a photograph of the two girls in their Manchester United shirts. The child killer Ian Huntley has died after being attacked in prison. The former school caretaker killed Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, both aged 10, in Soham, Cambridgeshire on 4 August 2002. The girls had left a family barbecue to buy sweets. On 26 February reports emerged that Huntley, 52, had been taken to hospital after being assaulted at HMP Frankland. It is thought he was knocked unconscious with a metal pole, according to the Sun, which first reported the attack. It was widely reported he had been taken off life support on Friday after his condition deteriorated. After the murder of Holly and Jessica, who were friends, a 13-day search took place that became one of the most intensive in British criminal history. Their bodies were found in a ditch near an RAF base about 10 miles from Soham. A total of 400 police officers were assigned full-time to the case, with investigators questioning every registered sex offender in Cambridgeshire and neighbouring Lincolnshire. His agitated demeanour and questions about the length of time that DNA evidence would last caused police officers to become suspicious. Initially, Huntley was given an alibi by his then partner, Maxine Carr, a teaching assistant whom the girls knew, but this broke down under police questioning. He was later arrested when officers searching his workplace found charred pieces of the Manchester United shirts the girls had been wearing when they disappeared, along with other evidence connecting him to the crime. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “The murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman remains one of the most shocking and devastating cases in our nation’s history, and our thoughts are with their families.” Huntley was serving two lif...
