Current multiples – ~10-11x EV/Sales on a ~$117–$121M forward revenue base – are much higher than the medtech sector median (~3x). However, they still do not represent multiples typically awarded to successful SaaS companies. Part of the reason for that could be that the company is still operating at a mere ~$26.5M quarterly revenue run rate. Despite nearly SaaS-like consolidated gross margins of ~69%, they are still running at persistent losses. This shows that the transition is not yet complete. The revenue mix is what drives the narrative here. Embedded revenue grew rapidly – ~147% YoY – but at ~$5.7M, it is still only around ~21% of the mix. It carries much higher margins but is complicated by the fact that not all of it is recurring. For the current valuation to justify itself, this needs to move closer to ~30%+, at which time incremental revenue will start looking more platform-like rather than device sales. Business Model Butterfly still derives most of its income from its core business, which was . ~$20.8M in Q1, i.e., ~79% of the mix. This core business sells two ultrasound probes, iQ and iQ3, some related software, and early enterprise offerings like Compass AI. Butterfly’s devices are semiconductor “ultrasound-on-chip” systems. These replace the traditional piezoelectric crystals (PZT) with a programmable chip. This chip can process multiple imaging modes using software, and it requires a single probe for the whole body, not the multiple probes needed in traditional USG. This simplicity, along with its handheld form factor, makes these devices cheaper (iQ+ is ~$2,700, iQ3 is ~$3,900; see 10-K pg. 9 ) compared to traditional cart-based systems that can cost anywhere between $30K and $120K (10-K pg. 7).
