Rheinmetall AG reported preliminary first-quarter sales of about €1.9 billion that missed the average analyst estimate of about €2.3 billion as Germany’s biggest defense firm gears up for a year of executing on major orders from Europe and beyond. Rheinmetall expects first-half revenues to favor the second quarter due to truck sales to Germany and production re-commencing at a Spanish ammunition plant after an accident, the company said in a statement on Monday. The defense firm also reported operating profit of €224 million for the first quarter, which missed the average analyst estimate of €240 million as well. In 2026, the company introduced a new divisional structure and now reports sales for the Vehicle Systems, Weapons & Ammunition, Digital Systems, Air Defense and Naval Systems segments. Its civilian branch, called Power Systems, no longer reports earnings as Rheinmetall prepares to divest the business to a financial investor. Rheinmetall forecast full-year sales of €14 billion to €14.5 billion and operating profit of about 19% when the defense prime last communicated results in March, which disappointed analysts as expectations run high after the firm’s meteoric rise since 2022. In light of the war in Iran, the company aims to increase its presence in the field of missile systems and ballistic rocket artillery, including by way of a joint venture with Destinus Group BV announced in April. In the same month, Rheinmetall also received its most significant contract so far in 2026, when it entered into a framework agreement with the German Bundeswehr for the supply of loitering munition. Rheinmetall will report its full first-quarter results on May 7.

Private equity firm KPS Capital Partners is buying the discounted debt of its own company, Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope, in a bid to secure the upper hand in the glass giant’s looming financial overhaul. KPS has bought chunks of Oldcastle’s $585 million in bonds at roughly 50 cents on the dollar, according to people familiar with the matter. It’s being viewed as a bid to preserve the value of its investment as a consortium of Oldcastle’s lenders prepares for a potentially contentious battle, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private information. Faced with high interest rates and a sluggish market for selling companies, private equity firms are adopting increasingly aggressive tactics to protect their holdings. By becoming a creditor of its own portfolio company, KPS is following a playbook used by firms including Clayton, Dubilier & Rice , which made a similar move with its label maker Multi-Color Corp. By owning a company’s debt, sponsors improve their negotiating positions in restructuring talks, helping guard against lenders taking control. A representative for KPS declined to comment. Representatives for Oldcastle and its advisers Evercore and Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison didn’t respond to requests for comment. Oldcastle joins a growing roster of highly-leveraged firms buckling under the weight of a building industry pullback and high borrowing costs. The company saw its revenue and earnings drop last year amid the softening demand. Bonds Tumble KPS bought the Oldcastle unsecured bonds at a premium to recent trading levels, according to the people. The debt had previously tumbled to a low of 32.25 cents in early March, according to Trace data. KPS negotiated the debt buyback with some of Oldcastle’s biggest lenders, or members of the steering committee, some of the people said. Some bondholders to the distributor of architectural glass offloaded their positions amid fears they could be wiped out in court or in an out-of-court restru...
