After the U.S. sinks an Iranian warship, Sri Lanka takes custody of an Iranian vessel toggle caption Eranga Jayawardene/AP/AP COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka transferred more than 200 sailors from an Iranian naval vessel to shore Friday after it sought assistance while anchored outside the country's waters, as tensions mounted in the Indian Ocean following the sinking of an Iranian warship by a U.S. submarine. Sri Lankan navy spokesperson Cmdr. Buddhika Sampath said 204 sailors of the IRIS Bushehr were brought to Welisara Naval Base near the capital, Colombo. They underwent border control procedures and medical tests, but none were found to have health issues. About 15 others have been left aboard the ship with Sri Lankan naval personnel for assistance because they had reported a fault with the ship. The Iranian sailors are interpreting operational instructions, manuals and logs for their Sri Lankan counterparts. He said the ship will be taken to the port of Trincomalee in eastern Sri Lanka, and remain in Sri Lankan custody until further notice. Sponsor Message Iranian ship was taking part in naval exercises The Sri Lankan government took custody of the Bushehr after the U.S. sank an Iranian warship, the IRIS Dena, off Sri Lanka's coast Wednesday. The strike marked one of the rare instances since World War II in which a submarine sank a surface warship, and highlighted the expanding scope of the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran. The Dena had participated in naval exercises hosted by India before heading into international waters on its way home. At least 74 countries had joined the events, according to India's Defense Ministry, including the U.S. Navy, which conducted reconnaissance aircraft and maritime patrol drills. The Indian navy received a distress signal from the Dena but by the time it launched a search and rescue operation, the Sri Lankan navy had already begun its own rescue efforts, the ministry said. The Sri Lankan navy rescued 32 sailors and r...

A man accused of murdering his pregnant girlfriend in Northern Ireland beat a previous partner, a court has heard. Stephen McCullagh also covertly recorded the counselling sessions of the woman, just months before he met and allegedly killed Natalie McNally, Belfast crown court was told on Friday. McCullagh, 36, of Lisburn, County Antrim, denies murdering McNally, 32, who was found dead at her home in Lurgan, County Armagh, in December 2022. She was subjected to a prolonged assault that included stab wounds to the neck, strangulation and heavy blows to the head, according to a state pathologist. Prosecutors allege that McCullagh uploaded a prerecorded gaming session to YouTube and pretended it was a live stream to confect an alibi for a crime that was “planned, calculated and premeditated”. On Friday, the ninth day of the trial, the ex-girlfriend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she met McCullagh in 2015 and that they had an “off and on” relationship for seven years. At the end of 2019 they met at his home to try to reconcile after a break-up, she said. McCullagh became angry after discovering that she had been messaging and sending images to another man, the woman said. “He pushed me abruptly, yanked the phone off me and pushed me into the bathtub.” Later that evening, while McCullagh was driving the woman to her home, she attempted to take her own life by jumping from the moving car, she said. McCullagh pulled her back and allegedly hit her. “He punched me in the temple. He said I could kill myself on my own time.” McCullagh’s defence barrister, John Kearney KC, said his client had no recollection of a physical row in the bathroom and that in the car he intervened to save her life. The ex-girlfriend said McCullagh threatened to send pictures from her phone to her family, friends and colleagues and to burn sentimental items of her that were at his home. The defence disputed both claims. The couple separated again, resumed contact in 2021 and in January ...

Back in 2009, residents were scandalized when employees at Burr Oak Cemetery in the Chicago suburb of Alsip were accused of exhuming old graves in order to resell the burial plots, unceremoniously dumping older remains in another area on the grounds. The perpetrators were tried and convicted in 2015 , but the forensic evidence of the moss that helped convict them has now been detailed in a new paper published in the journal Forensic Sciences Research. It's a follow-up to a 2025 paper concluding that mosses and other bryophyte plants have been used as evidence in forensic cases only a dozen or so times over the last century. "The focus was an attempt to elevate the profile of these small, often overlooked plants," co-author Matt von Konrat, who heads the botany collections at Chicago's Field Museum, told Ars. "Mosses are ubiquitous, resilient, and capable of preserving timeline and habitat information in ways that complement other forensic tools. Our recent publications help consolidate these cases into the scientific record and, we hope, encourage investigators to recognize and preserve botanical evidence more routinely. [We also wanted to] highlight the use of natural history collections and their stories and how they can be applied to questions and applied in ways we have yet to imagine." Burr Oak Cemetery dates back to 1927, when it was founded to serve as the final resting place for Chicago's African American population, which had grown significantly since the turn of the century due to migration from the South. Among the luminaries buried there are Emmett Till, heavyweight boxing champion Ezzard Charles, and blues singers Willie Dixon and Dinah Washington. Read full article Comments
