Microsoft Corp. targeted a $92 billion return from its large early investments in OpenAI , a landmark arrangement that helped usher in the current AI era. The goal was included in Microsoft planning documents from early 2023 and disclosed Monday in court. The investments “worked out well because we took the risk,” Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella testified to a jury hearing Elon Musk ’s high-profile case against OpenAI and Microsoft in federal court in Oakland, California. The world’s largest software maker invested about $13 billion in the ChatGPT maker through early 2023. Since then, OpenAI’s valuation has skyrocketed to $852 billion by the end of March. As of October, Microsoft’s stake in the company was valued at about $135 billion . In a 2024 lawsuit, Musk accused fellow OpenAI co founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman of abandoning the startup’s founding mission as a nonprofit to benefit humanity when it took steps to operate as a for-profit business. The world’s richest person alleged that Microsoft aided that betrayal. Read More: Musk and Altman Head to Trial in Feud Over Future of OpenAI Microsoft and OpenAI have squabbled over the terms of their partnership and over time come into more direct competition with one another. As part of OpenAI’s restructuring last year , Microsoft received a 27% ownership stake in the startup. OpenAI, Altman, Brockman and Microsoft have all denied wrongdoing, saying Musk’s claims are baseless harassment aimed at boosting his own AI startup, xAI , that launched in 2023.

Radio station owner Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. filed for bankruptcy on Monday after announcing plans to hand ownership to noteholders in exchange for restructuring the debt. The company, which caters to the US Hispanic population, signed a deal with Brigade Capital Management , Man Group and an affiliate of HIG Capital in early April, SBS said in a statement . Those bondholders hold 72% of the company’s $310 million notes at the time. In its Chapter 11 petition in Delaware, SBS listed assets and liabilities of between $100 million and $500 million. Although the company claims a dominant position in the Hispanic radio market, revenue declined last year amid an ongoing slump in broadcast, SBS told investors in a December regulatory filing . Revenue for the three months ending Dec. 31 fell to $31.3 million compared to $35.8 million for the same period in 2024, according to the filing. Since a sale process failed in 2023, SBS has struggled to unload its television assets, known as MegaTV. In August, the company sold its television station in Puerto Rico for $5.7 million, it said in the filing.

Fernando Genzor/iStock via Getty Images The GraniteShares YieldBOOST Semiconductor ETF ( SEMY ) is a cautious Hold in my view because it is structurally designed to do well in semiconductor markets that hold up. Extreme rallies like those seen in the past few months do not really matter (other than increasing premiums harvested through a volatile net spike up). As long as the base case expected ahead is not bearish, SEMY should continue to do well as a tactical cash flow tool. That does not appear to be the case ahead. While mostly agnostic to sharp rallies, SEMY's structural makeup makes it still sensitive to drawdowns (which are magnified anyway due to leverage). After a prolific run-up in semis in the past few months, SEMY remains exposed to this risk as a base case in my view. A lot of AI infrastructure stocks will potentially start seeing multiple compression as earnings keep growing—if too fast, that could mean a regime ahead for SEMY where the NAV erodes far too quickly and total returns stay flat to negative. Potential Use Case for SEMY From a methodology perspective, SEMY is a high-yield, short-volatility income fund built on a 3x leveraged semiconductor ETF (the SOXL ETF). SEMY sells cash secured put options on the SOXL ETF (which itself targets 3x daily exposure to the semiconductor index). Because implied volatility on leveraged ETFs is usually much higher, option premiums are rich, which should aid income if SOXL moves up. That means the upside is limited mostly to option premiums, while the downside can still be very large. To address downside risks, such ETFs often use put spreads. Since SEMY is a high-yield ETF, calculating exact distribution/yield numbers depends on how we are doing it. The dividends paid to date amount to ~$12.80 over 25 weeks since inception. When annualized, that translates to ~$25.50, which is over a 140% yield on current prices (and ~100% yield on a cost basis if calculated on inception ETF prices). Another way to measure yield...

watch now VIDEO 5:22 05:22 OpenAI's Denise Dresser discusses launch of new deployment company Money Movers OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser said Monday that we're at a "tipping point" in enterprise artificial intelligence adoption, and the startup's new Deployment Company will help with the push to get more companies on board. "Think about the complex workflows, about how you actually build a product service, a product market, a product, and this structure of this company is going to allow us to do that at speed and scale," Dresser told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street." OpenAI announced the new business unit on Monday, which included the acquisition of applied AI consulting firm Tomoro. The OpenAI Development Company is a partnership with 19 investment and consultancy firms, including Bain, Goldman Sachs and SoftBank, and is majority-owned and controlled by OpenAI. The Tomoro acquisition will bring about 150 engineers specializing in deploying frontier AI models into OpenAI's umbrella to work with clients. These forward-deployed engineers will help businesses with AI adoption. "Forward-deployed engineers can sit with an organization, sit with their users, understand the workflow, and then help them take that capability from their back-office applications, connecting it to the model, and then really building intelligence in terms of each of the workflow," Dresser told CNBC. Dresser's comments come as the race for enterprise customers heats up, with OpenAI rival Anthropic the leader and Google also a player in the space with Gemini. Last week, Anthropic said it was partnering with Goldman Sachs as well as Blackstone to launch a $1.5 billion firm aimed at tackling faster AI adoption across hundreds of companies. Dresser, who was previously CEO at Slack, was hired as OpenAI's chief revenue officer in December. georgeclerk/iStock via Getty Images Despite growing concerns about elevated valuations in technology ( XLK ) ( SMH ) ( AIQ ) stocks, market strategist Dan Niles believes the current rally could continue for at least another year before reaching its peak. In a recent CNBC interview, the Niles Investment Management founder drew parallels between today’s AI-driven market and the dot-com era but emphasized a key difference: this time, there’s fundamental growth backing the surge. “You can be in a bubble, but still have it inflate a lot more before you get to the end of that,” Niles explained. He noted that in the first three years following ChatGPT’s ( OPENAI ) release in late 2022, the Nasdaq ( COMP:IND ) ( QQQ ) has risen 122%, compared with a 109% gain during the equivalent period of the internet buildout. Niles pointed to the finalization of OpenClaw on Jan. 30 as a pivotal moment, ushering in the era of agentic AI. Unlike traditional chat-based AI, agentic systems can perform complex multi-step tasks, requiring 10 to 100 times more compute power. The data supports this shift: token generation growth accelerated from roughly 20% in the two months before OpenClaw’s finalization to over 120% in the two months following, Niles told CNBC. “You should see at least strong growth through the beginning of next year,” he predicted, before harder comparisons emerge. ismagilov/iStock via Getty Images Fund performance The Fund gained (gross of fees) and outperformed the Russell 2000 Index. At the stock level, shares of Viavi Solutions ( VIAV ) benefited from growth in the data-centre ecosystem and contributions from recent acquisitions. Camtek's ( CAMT ) shares gained as the company experienced accelerating demand due to its significant exposure to artificial intelligence (AI)-related hardware segments. Everus Construction Group's ( ECG ) shares rose after the company issued above-consensus guidance, supported by growing data-centre demand and solid execution. Conversely, Alphatec Holdings' ( ATEC ) shares sold off after reporting fourth-quarter earnings below elevated investor expectations, alongside heightened scrutiny across high-growth medical device names. ADMA Biologics' ( ADMA ) shares declined after management failed to directly address key concerns on revenue quality, leading to sustained pressure on the stock. Shares of Q2 Holdings ( QTWO ) fell amid continued investor concerns regarding potential AI-driven disruption. Market review For the first quarter, US small caps gained marginally and outperformed broader US equities, which fell over the period. US equities were relatively resilient earlier in the quarter. However, this strength gave way to a sharp downturn toward quarter end due to a volatile March. Uncertainty over tariffs and softer economic data contributed to weaker sentiment, while the Iran war was the main driver of the March sell-off. Fire Erupts At HF Sinclair Refinery In Tulsa Local media in Tulsa, Oklahoma, report that the HF Sinclair refinery, which has a crude-processing capacity of 125,000 barrels per day, has suffered a fire. This comes just days after another refinery fire in the New Orleans area. Fox 23 News reports that the Tulsa Fire Department is currently on the scene after a fire broke out at the refinery in West Tulsa earlier today. The refinery is critical because it primarily processes sweet crude, can handle some sour Canadian crude, and markets refined products to the Mid-Continent states. Its products include gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, renewable diesel, lubricants, specialty chemicals, and asphalt. Neither the outlet nor local authorities have released information about what caused the fire or whether any components at the refinery were damaged. HF Sinclair is a top independent refiner that operates seven facilities with a total crude-processing capacity of about 678,000 barrels per day. On Friday, PBF Energy's 190,000-barrel-per-day Chalmette refinery outside New Orleans suffered a major fire .
