Japan’s three megabanks are set to secure access to Anthropic’s artificial intelligence model Mythos, according to a person familiar with the matter, after its limited release last month sparked fears of a new age of cybersecurity risks. MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. and Mizuho Bank are all likely to gain access to the artificial intelligence model developed by the US firm, the person said, asking not to be identified because the information is private. The planned access was earlier reported by local media outlet Nikkei. The move comes as financial institutions around the world grow concerned about the risks created by Mythos, which has an unprecedented ability to detect software vulnerabilities. That has raised concerns that hackers could use Mythos to disrupt critical infrastructure, and access has so far been limited to a small number of US companies and organizations. Anthropic didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Read More: Inside Anthropic’s Race to Assess the Dangers of Mythos Nikkei said Mythos access could be granted to the Japanese megabanks as early as the end of May, adding that the banks were informed during US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent ’s recent visit to Tokyo. Japan’s Financial Services Agency is set to hold the first meeting of a public-private working group on Thursday aimed at strengthening cybersecurity measures. Participants are expected to include the three megabanks and other lenders, alongside firms such as NTT Data Group Corp. and Nomura Research Institute Ltd. Officials from Japan’s Finance Ministry and the Bank of Japan are also expected to attend.

Turkey’s foreign reserves had their biggest monthly decline on record in March, as the Iran war triggered global selloffs in emerging market assets and strained the lira. Official reserves declined by $43.4 billion in March, balance-of-payments data released on Wednesday morning showed. Part of the decline reflected state intervention to offset portfolio outflows. The current-account deficit, meanwhile, widened to $9.7 billion in March from $7.3 billion in February. A major energy importer, Turkey has been hit hard by higher oil and gas prices caused by the effective closing of the Strait of Hormuz and the resulting disruptions to world supplies of crude and refined products. Some global banks have started changing their favorable outlook on the lira, citing the expanding current-account deficit. READ MORE: BofA, Barclays Ditch Popular Lira Trade as Oil Shock Hits Turkey “As international institutions continue to raise their average oil price forecasts for 2026, disruptions in supply chains and ongoing regional tensions — and their potential negative impact on transportation and tourism revenues — keep upward risks alive in year-end projections” for Turkey, said Istanbul-based economist Haluk Burumcekci . Turkish central bank Governor Fatih Karahan said last week that the ratio between the current-account deficit and gross domestic product would be “below historical averages” this year while acknowledging the upside risks. Since President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ’s reelection in 2023, a new economic team has sought to stabilize Turkey’s external finances by cooling demand through conventional tools such as higher interest rates and restrictions on credit growth. The central bank has kept its benchmark rate at 37% for two straight meetings but has effectively lended from a costlier rate of 40% since the outbreak of the Iran war — a technical measure to tighten liquidity without instituting a formal rate hike. Inflationary pressures persist, however, with annual price gr...

Rome’s Spallanzani hospital ran the tests on the Italian man. The risk to the broader public from the Hondius cruise ship outbreak remains low, according to public health officials, but the cluster has prompted a multicountry response as passengers are repatriated and monitored for symptoms that can take weeks to appear. Their contacts are also under close surveillance. Read More: What Is Hantavirus and How Did It Kill Cruise Ship Passengers? The World Health Organization has recommended monitoring and quarantine for up to 42 days, reflecting the virus’s long incubation period and uncertainty around when infected people may become contagious. Additional cases may emerge because passengers interacted before preventive measures were put in place, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Tuesday. The Andes strain of hantavirus, found in South America, is the only known variant capable of spreading between people, though transmission is considered rare and typically linked to close or prolonged contact. Still, scientists say the evidence base is limited, and the conditions under which the virus spreads are not fully understood. Health officials are continuing to trace contacts and monitor passengers across multiple countries as they assess how the virus spread on board and whether additional infections occur. Confirmation of the negative tests for the Italian KLM passenger came from a statement by the Italian Health Ministry.

Indonesia Investment Authority has hired investment banker Oki Ramadhana as its new chief executive officer, according to people familiar with the matter, filling a leadership vacuum at the country’s first sovereign wealth fund. Ramadhana previously served as president director at Mandiri Sekuritas , after holding a similar role and heading investment banking at HSBC Sekuritas, according to his LinkedIn profile . He also had stints at Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs Group . INA also appointed Laksono Widodo , former president director of BRI Danareksa Sekuritas , as chief investment officer, and Adhiputra Tanoyo , a former director at Bank Ina Perdana , as chief risk officer, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private matters. All three were sworn in on Wednesday, they said. INA declined to comment. Ramadhana takes the helm at the wealth fund, known as INA, after predecessor Ridha Wirakusumah concluded his full term in February with no visibility on a replacement. Wirakusumah’s departure had left INA’s board with just two of its five positions filled by regular appointments. The leadership transition comes as Indonesia is boosting efforts to drive inflows to support President Prabowo Subianto’s growth targets. The country’s other sovereign wealth fund, Danantara , is set to expand rapidly, with plans to ramp up deployment from its $12 billion war chest . Like Danantara, INA reports directly to Prabowo. Established in December 2020, INA’s mandate is to attract new capital to Indonesia via direct co-investment and hybrid capital solutions, including private credit, according to a February company presentation. It has deployed over $4.5 billion alongside investor partners across sectors such as transport and infrastructure, digital, green energy, healthcare and education, the presentation showed. INA is also active in private credit. It was among the lenders on a $250 million loan for Indonesian energy and chemicals firm Chandra Asri Pacific, back...

Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB) 's portfolio has largely centered around a handful of stocks. While it has dumped stocks and added new ones in recent years, the bulk of its portfolio remains tied up in five key names: Apple , American Express , Coca-Cola , Bank of America , and Chevron . Combined, those stocks make up around 60% of the total portfolio. And in the past, the percentage has been even higher. Warren Buffett, who was the CEO of Berkshire for decades up until this year (Greg Abel has since taken over), has been relatively cautious despite the stock market being strong in recent years. And for investors familiar with Buffett's approach, it may not be much of a surprise. Image source: Getty Images. Continue reading

DoraDalton/E+ via Getty Images My coverage of Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp. ( AQN ) has been spotty in its performance. Anyone following my overall targets for the company in terms of buying and selling would have bought the company at a price that I believe to be attractive for the longer term, based on my price target given in my previous article of about $6.50/share, and would probably not have sold before the recent decline in the stock. It's a small underperformance, and one I view as temporary rather than long-term. Let me make this clear. You can find my previous article here, and you can see the previous performance as well. Utilities like AQN have been very tricky companies to invest in for a number of years now. A few years ago, I would have been all positive on basically many or most of them—US-based or EU-based, either would have worked. But now, if you follow my overall coverage on utilities, you'll see that I'm actually relatively negative on many of these companies now, due to the combination of valuations and upside while considering the companies' CapEx budgets going forward. But, dear readers, AQN is slightly different—and therefore I've been positive on the company and continue to be positive at this time as well. I say that the company is different. How exactly is this company different from other utilities that I have covered? What makes it better, if so? Most utilities are plays on a relatively safe asset base that's currently undergoing a significant CapEx budget related to data centers. That is not this company's identity. AQN has historically been more “special” or unique because of its exposure to high-growth renewable assets. This is no longer the unique profile of the company—as I said in my previous article, the profile of renewables has moved into asset divestitures , with the target of becoming a pure-play regulated one. It doesn't have just electricity—it has electric, water, and natural gas. The renewable sales have the net effec...
