Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) published its latest update for vehicle production and deliveries before the market opened this morning, and the report suggested ongoing headwinds for the company's core electric vehicle ( EV ) business. While the company produced 408,386 EVs last quarter, it posted only 358,023 vehicles in the quarter -- falling short of the average analyst estimate's call for 370,000 vehicles delivered in the period. Notably, a previous report from the company had estimated that it would deliver 365,645 vehicles in Q1. Tesla's Q1 deliveries were actually up 6% year over year from the 336,681 vehicles it delivered in the prior-year period . On the other hand, deliveries were down roughly 14% on a sequential quarterly basis. While sales seasonality is likely a driving factor in the decline from Q4's delivery level, the company's EV business still appears to be facing some significant demand issues. Image source: Tesla. Canada’s biggest refinery is turning to Newfoundland for crude for the first time since 2020 as the war on Iran cuts off Middle Eastern supplies. Irving Oil Ltd. was granted permission by the Canadian Transportation Agency to use foreign tankers to shuttle 650,000 to 680,000 barrels of crude. The oil will be sent from the Whiffen Head terminal in Newfoundland and Labrador to its 320,000 barrel a day Saint John refinery in New Brunswick between April 25 and May 25, according to a notice . An email to Irving for comment was not immediately returned. Saint John, a major supplier of oil to the US Northeast , is the only Canadian refinery to rely on crude originating from the Persian Gulf. The US-Israel war on Iran has choked off supplies through the vital shipping route the Strait of Hormuz. The tanker Clio delivered about 633,000 barrels of Hibernia crude to the Irving plant, according to Vortexa data. The refinery received multiple cargoes of Newfoundland crude in 2016 and 2017. Federal prosecutors have reached a settlement to eventually drop criminal charges against a former Centerview Partners LLC investment banker who was accused of participating in an international insider-trading ring and has been living in her native Thailand for years. In 2019, Darina Windsor and her then live-in boyfriend in London, Benjamin Taylor, were accused of passing inside information on 22 companies from late 2012 to early 2018. Prosecutors claimed the pair, who referred to each other as “Pops” and “Popsy” in emails, made more than $1 million from the scheme. According to a deferred prosecution agreement, securities fraud charges will be dropped against Windsor in a year as long as she follows through on an pledge to pay $100,000 to the US Securities and Exchange Commission and stays out of legal trouble. Her settlement includes $50,000 in alleged trading profits and $50,000 in penalties. Windsor, who left London and has lived in Thailand since before the charges were made public, pleaded not guilty Thursday during an unusual video hearing in Manhattan federal court before US District Judge Denise Cote . “She is not in custody and there is no prospect of her being in custody,” Assistant US Attorney Andrew Thomas said at the hearing. Centerview spokesman Dana Cimilluca said Windsor was fired a decade ago for misconduct. “Maintaining our clients’ confidentiality is paramount and something we are focused on every day,” Cimilluca said in an email. Windsor and Taylor were both swept up in an criminal case that alleged a broad scheme to pass inside tips on deals to a ring that operated in the US, UK, France, Switzerland, Greece, Israel and Hong Kong. Several people, including an ex- Goldman Sachs Group Inc. banker, were convicted in the case. Taylor, who worked in London for Moelis & Co. , is scheduled to plead guilty in June to a single count of conspiracy. In exchange, prosecutors will seek a sentence no longer than a year and a day behind bars, which would be r...

J Studios The U.S. economy is not heading into a recession despite significant market volatility driven by the ongoing Iran conflict, according to Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group. In an interview with CNBC, Detrick pointed to strong corporate fundamentals and labor market resilience as key factors supporting his optimistic outlook, even as markets experienced dramatic intraday swings following news about Iran’s negotiations with Oman regarding ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJI ) dropped roughly 600 points at its lows before briefly turning positive during Thursday’s trading session, marking what could be the tenth consecutive down Thursday—the most negative Thursday streak on record. Detrick characterized the current market environment as a “slow-motion crash” driven by excessive hedging, massive put buying, and heavy short positions. “Everyone’s predicting it, and then the market has a funny way of not doing that,” he noted. Despite the headline volatility, Detrick highlighted encouraging technical signals beneath the surface. He pointed out that the New York Stock Exchange has seen fewer new lows for three consecutive weeks even as major indices have declined. “The market’s going down, yes, but less stocks going down. I think that’s a glass-half-full type of thing to look at,” he said. Corporate America’s strength remains a crucial pillar of Detrick’s bullish case. S&P 500 ( SP500 ) forward earnings are up 7% this year, and profit margins are hitting all-time highs despite geopolitical concerns. “If corporate America stays strong, the labor market, which, hey, we’ve had some okay labor market news—look at claims this morning, again, pretty good—the economy’s not going into recession,” Detrick said. The strategist drew comparisons to market conditions a year ago, when similar waves of negativity ultimately gave way to recovery. “The market’s not about good or bad. It’s about better or worse,” he...
