In March, Reuters reported that Amazon was developing a new smartphone . Citing four anonymous “people familiar with the matter,” the publication said that Amazon was exploring using Alexa as an operating system and developing the phone, codenamed Transformer, to push people to use Amazon’s AI and other services. At the time, the sources said that Transformer could still be canceled, and Amazon declined to comment on the report to Ars Technica. In an interview published on the Financial Times (FT) today, Panos Panay, Amazon's head of devices and services, said building a new phone isn’t Amazon’s goal. The company already tried selling a smartphone in 2014, but it discontinued the Fire Phone about a year later following poor sales . Read full article Comments

Northeastern University’s takeover of New York City’s Marymount Manhattan College provided a $202.7 million windfall, bolstered by its new ownership of prime Manhattan real estate. The deal added $215 million of land and buildings on Marymount Manhattan’s Upper East Side campus to Northeastern’s balance sheet, according to bond offering documents released this week. The Boston-based university received close to $47 million in investments from the merger, while also taking on $68.3 million in liabilities, including unpaid bills and a loan. A spokesperson for Northeastern did not provide an immediate comment. The acquired real estate includes four buildings totaling 285,000 square feet on East 71st Street, according to the bond documents. The school also owns a 55th Street residence hall with 32 floors of student housing. Real estate is often a college’s largest asset. Through the Marymount acquisition, Northeastern is able to add a sought-after New York City presence to its rapidly growing footprint. The university has a dedicated mergers and acquisitions team that’s helped it expand rapidly in the last decade, acquiring more than 10 million square feet of real estate across 14 campuses in places like Toronto, London and Miami. Northeastern is still waiting on federal approval for the merger with Marymount but expects to receive final clearance from the US Department of Education on or before June 30. Analysts at Moody’s Ratings noted its multiple locations will continue to support “considerable student market strength.” In its roadshow for bond investors, Northeastern cited the tremendous growth it’s seen in metrics like applications — at a record 105,256 for fall 2025 — and enrollme...

The latest chapter in the artificial intelligence bull market has more of the hallmarks of the kind of euphoria that can lead to its own demise. That’s because it largely relies on the cyclical semiconductor industry. The initial phase saw deep-pocketed technology companies benefitting most, with Nvidia at the center. The boom stalled when it became debt-fueled. The rally has how fanned out to many more chipmakers, spurring a surge in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. Such narrow and parabolic runs have been a hallmark of large pullbacks . Still, the rally can go on for a while, especially if AI’s top private players enter the market. Howard Marks was prescient Back in August, Oaktree Capital Management Co-Founder Howard Marks told Bloomberg Television that the last time stocks were this expensive relative to reality was around 1997, “and the market went on to rally for another three years.” That call looked shaky just a couple of months later when the tech rally stalled. Even Marks was alarmed at how much debt companies were taking on to fuel their AI investments. These stocks were then sold heavily in February and again in March after the war on Iran erupted. By April, though, investors had plunged headlong back into tech stocks after their worst fears over the war didn’t materialize. Market leadership has changed though. The biggest technology stocks led the charge earlier because they were deploying AI. Nvidia was at the forefront as the only AI plumbing stock that could reap clear benefits. But as the gargantuan spend continued, more players in the AI ‘plumbing’ space entered the race — a prospect I highlighted back in October. Since April, that rally has been fierce. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, known as SOX, has gone parabolic. Here’s the problem though. The semiconductor industry is incredibly cyclical - one of the most cyclical sectors in equities. When the economy turns down, product demand falls, leading to production overcapacity, bloated in...

( AADX ) has filed to raise debt reduction capital from an IPO, per an S-1 registration statement . AADX provides a range of aerospace and defense products to the U.S. and allied partners. The company is growing via acquisition, but debt is high with all the IPO’s proceeds earmarked for debt reduction. I’ll provide a final opinion when we get pricing and valuation assumptions from the company. What Does Applied Aerospace Do? Applied Aerospace provides products to the U.S. government and like-minded countries in the areas of: Space and Launch Systems Defense Aviation and Airborne Systems C5ISR and Precision Strike Systems In 2025, 87% of the firm’s revenue came from sole-source or single-source positions. The pie charts below show Applied’s revenue contribution by segment and timing for 2025: SEC Management said its markets are seeing strong growth, although the space and defense segment remains constrained in producing mission-critical subsystems at scale due to decades of consolidation, outsourcing, and underinvestment. The firm is led by Chief Executive Officer James William (“Trip”) Ferguson, III, who has been with the company since November 2025 and was previously President of Space, Cyber and Directed Energy at AeroVironment ( AVAV ) and has a long career in the defense industry. Investors have invested a fair market value of $312.6 million into Applied so far and include AA&D Holdings, an entity by Greenbriar Equity Group, a specialist private equity firm active in the advanced manufacturing space. What is Applied’s Market? The broader U.S. aerospace and defense market is an estimated $463 billion in 2026 and is forecast to exceed $610 billion by 2031, according to a market research report by Mordor Intelligence.
