That the stock is overvalued to the extent, that I doubt it will be able to deliver returns on par with the broader market seen over the coming three to five years. For me to buy the stock, it would have to drop between 30-50% before it would be interesting at the current valuation, and that’s without considering the event that would make it fall to such an extent. If the trigger for such a contraction was a steep drop in growth, then the margin of safety could expand as it would require repricing the valuation up against a change in company performance and outlook. This conclusion is built upon observing the industry Caterpillar operates in, together with the forward-looking requirements for Caterpillar to grow into its current valuation. Remember, that while a company can execute flawlessly, it can become overvalued regardless, and while I have quarrels with how the company operates at this point, investors simply have to pay too much to obtain a share in the cash flow generated by the company, and I’m far from interested. For now, however, the stock may continue its unrelenting melt up as it carries a very strong momentum. All news is positively interpreted, and positive upward revisions and earnings beats keep a supporting hand under the positive momentum, which seems to show no end at how steeply the company can be valued.
