watch now VIDEO 3:14 03:14 Treasury Secretary Bessent: Expect 'substantial disinflation' after 1-2 more hot inflation numbers Squawk Box Even with recent inflation news universally bad, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expects price pressures to ease soon, just in time for the new Federal Reserve chair to take over. Speaking Thursday to CNBC, Bessent said the energy-fed inflation surge recently is likely to reverse as the U.S. is "going to keep pumping" oil, easing the supply shock from the Iran war. "I firmly believe that nothing is more transient than a supply shock, and we can, we can look through that, because before the Iranian conflict began, core inflation was coming down," Bessent told CNBC's Joe Kernen from the sidelines of President Donald Trump's summit with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. "So I think core inflation will continue coming down." That hasn't been the recent trend, however. Separate readings this week showed that consumer prices jumped 0.6% in April — and still rose 0.4% even when focusing on core costs that exclude food and energy. Twelve-month inflation stood at 3.8% for inflation and 2.8% for core. Similarly, wholesale prices , a better indication of pipeline pressures, soared 1.4%, putting the 12-month level at 6%, the highest since late 2022. The inflation shock showed up in import and export prices as well, which also posted their highest levels in about four years. Bessent said he thinks there will be one or two more "hot inflation numbers, but then I think we're going to see substantial disinflation." The Treasury chief also noted that the "Warsh Fed" is about a begin, a reference to incoming Chair Kevin Warsh , who was confirmed Wednesday by the Senate and will start after current Chair Jerome Powell's term ends Friday. Bessent said he remains optimistic that this period is different than the last inflation surge in 2021-22. The prior move followed the Covid pandemic, which sparked unprecedented fiscal and monetary stimulus as w...

MoMo Productions/DigitalVision via Getty Images Back in early October of last year, I decided to downgrade shares of Utah Medical Products ( UTMD ) from a "Buy" to a "Hold." Even though the stock had been on the rise, I believed that a more cautious approach to the business was warranted. This was driven by continued financial weakness that the company exhibited and margin pressures reflecting an unfavorable product mix in Ireland. The company was still facing litigation associated with its Filshie Clips. But the expectation at the time was that this litigation would not be material to the company's financial performance. Since downgrading it, the stock has increased only slightly, rising 4.8% compared to the 7.2% rise that the S&P 500 achieved. And honestly, that kind of underperformance makes sense because, even though shares are incredibly cheap right now, fundamentals continue to deteriorate. If it weren't for the fact that the company has an incredible balance sheet, I would likely take a bearish stance on it. But for now, I think that maintaining it as a "Hold" is appropriate. Taking another look at Utah Medical Products At this time, the newest fundamental data that investors have regarding Utah Medical Products covers through the first quarter of the company's 2026 fiscal year . I wish I could say that we had comprehensive data. But even though management announced financial results for the quarter on April 23, they have not yet released their 10-Q. So we are missing some insights, most notably when it comes to operating cash flow. Keeping that in mind, one thing we can say confidently is that fundamentals have worsened for the firm somewhat. Take revenue as an example. It dropped 10.2%, declining from $9.7 million to $8.7 million. This was even though domestic sales were virtually flat year over year. This was thanks to a 47.4% surge in revenue associated with its Filshie device sales. Management even commented on this, mentioning that demand from U.S. medi...

Welcome to Bloomberg’s Banking Monitor . Every Thursday we’ll deliver you the top news of the global banking industry with emerging trends, winners and losers and market opportunities. Sign up now if you’re not already on the list. JPMorgan Chase & Co. boss Jamie Dimon sat down with Bloomberg TV for an extensive interview that could fill this entire newsletter all by itself. The short version is that Dimon covered topics including war , global trade , market exuberance and artificial intelligence , just to name a few. The latter, he said, will change everything. It’s worth your time to watch the whole session . AI was indeed a dominant theme this week. At Charles Schwab, CEO Rick Wurster is planning to use AI to extend benefits usually reserved for wealthy clients to the less affluent. A Bank of Canada official extolled AI for its potential to increase output per hour worked, boost wages and save money for consumers. The soaring costs of AI are turning into a competitive barrier by making it more expensive for new Wall Street rivals to catch up — an advantage for established firms like Citadel Securities. Perhaps it’s time to go short on science fiction books, because AI is conjuring new realities faster than any author can dream up plot lines. Developers and financiers are talking about data centers in space , while Goldman Sachs foresees AI taking over the back office from humans and CME Group wants to start a futures market for computing power . That other important acronym, SRT, was also on a hot streak this week, with risk transfer deals being minted at a record pace in Europe. In Hong Kong, the risks, alas, have already landed and bankers are holding fire sales to extinguish record levels of bad debt. French banks won’t touch certain risks , specifically Marine Le Pen’s National Rally, so she’s seeking loans elsewhere on the continent. Looking backward, the 1970s are officially over: SEC officials want to abolish the “gag rule,” which for more than 50 years re...

designer491/iStock via Getty Images I'm 21 years old, almost done with my finance degree, and I recently started a new job that has a 401(k) plan. I opened the portal, saw the default target-date fund, and figured this was the part of personal finance I didn't have to think about as much. Set it, forget it, let compounding work for forty years, which has been the playbook nobody really questions. My current allocation is mostly equities, which is how every glide path works for someone my age. But then I started looking into the bond sleeve of the target-date fund my plan auto-enrolled me in, mostly because I was curious about what I was actually invested in. What I didn't expect was discovering that the bond side of this 'set-it-and-forget-it' product has quietly become one of the biggest indirect funding channels for the AI infrastructure boom in the process. Investment Thesis Oracle's ( ORCL ) 5-year credit default swap, essentially the cost to insure Oracle's debt against default, has been sitting near 200 basis points since the spring, breaking above its 2008 financial crisis peak. For context, the historical bull-market range for an investment-grade tech name like Oracle's 5-year CDS is 30 to 60 bps. Bond markets are pricing several times the normal level of credit risk on a company sitting on $553 billion of contracted backlog and 44% YoY cloud growth. Oracle CDS Spread (Factset) Yet the money building Oracle's and other companies' data centers often never hits their balance sheets. The chain runs through private credit structures and bond funds, including some of the largest core bond funds inside American retirement plans. Roughly 64% of all new 401(k) contributions flow into target-date funds, and those target-date funds hold their bond allocation through the same families of mutual funds buying this debt. What Hyperion Actually Is In October 2025, Meta ( META ) closed the largest private debt deal in history to fund a data center campus called Hyperion , i...

The Good Brigade/DigitalVision via Getty Images Since my first article on Novo Nordisk ( NVO ), the stock has risen by 21%. My initial thesis addressed the GLP-1 business, in which I believe Novo Nordisk's current product lineup to remain uncompetitive compared to their biggest peer, Eli Lilly, since tirzepatide's efficacy is far more effective than semaglutide. However, I believe this current disadvantage will be partially offset by the future pipeline. Both companies showed similar weight loss results with triple agonist solutions called zenogamtide and retatrutide . Assuming that supply constraints and sales channels do not significantly differ between the two, I think both companies should capture similar shares of market growth. Stock performance since last article (seekingalpha.com) On the occasion of Q1 earnings released last week, I want to share what changed since my initial article and why I am still not convinced of the stock, despite strong Q1 results. Q1 Results Overall, Novo Nordisk's Q1 results exceeded expectations. Sales decreased by only 4%, down to DKK 70 billion. This was mainly due to an 11% decrease in U.S. operations, which were impacted by lower realized prices due to the Most Favored Nation agreement. In 2027, I strongly believe these growth rates will be positive again, since the comparison between 2027 and 2026 both includes the impact of the Most Favored Nation agreement. Sales in China decreased by 10%, also due to lower prices. Note that reported sales were up 32%, but this increase was heavily impacted by a reversed provision and is therefore not indicative of sustainable business earnings. These negative impacts were partially offset by strong underlying fundamentals of new medications and growth in Europe. The Wegovy pill faced higher awareness than anticipated , as 1 million people out of 4 million in the entire weight loss segment are already making use of the pill. Cannibalization with Wegovy injections was moderate since 80% of W...

Robo.ai ( AIIO ) skyrocketed in early trading after the company's Neurovia AI unit launched NeuroStream, which it described as an AI-native visual data platform designed to serve the physical AI and machine economy ecosystem by enabling high-fidelity video data compression with low bandwidth and power consumption. NeuroStream was noted to use a bitmap vectorization algorithm to convert conventional video into a compact, machine-optimized format that preserves original resolution and frame rate while cutting file size dramatically, targeting data-intensive uses such as autonomous driving, robotics, smart cities, industrial AI, and global intelligent networks. Internal testing cited in the release shows a 5.5 GB 4K 60fps video compressed to 278 MB, about a 95% reduction, without losing core visual information, which the company says helps maintain data authenticity for regulated and mission-critical environments. The platform was also said to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio to improve machine-vision recognition accuracy and AI computational efficiency on compressed data. Looking ahead, Neurovia plans to introduce the NeuroStream platform progressively to core application scenarios, including autonomous driving, robotics, smart cities, industrial AI, and global intelligent networks Robo.ai ( AIIO ) was up 40% at 10:16 a.m., although it still trades sharply below its previous highs.
