My first thought when Apple announced the MacBook Neo today was “okay, but why not just get an older Air?” If you’re thinking that too, you might be right. If you can find one. The Neo starts at $599 with an A18 Pro processor, 8GB of memory, and 256GB storage, and ends at $699 with the same specs plus TouchID and 512GB of storage. It has two USB-C (not Thunderbolt) ports, a pretty basic-looking screen, a mechanical trackpad instead of haptic, and various other cost-saving measures. It’s the cheapest new MacBook you can get now. The new M5 MacBook Air starts at $1,099 with 16GB of memory and 512GB of much faster storage, a bigger and brighter screen, a better webcam, better Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, more speakers, Thunderbolt 4, a faster charger, and so forth. It’s $100 more than last year’s model, probably because of the Neo. Or you can get an M4 MacBook Air for $1000, with a slightly slower processor than the M5 (but still faster than the Air), and otherwise pretty much the same specs. If you could still get a new M1 Air from Walmart for $700, it’d be a pretty tough call between that and the Neo. That machine came out in 2020, but is still better in most respects. Unfortunately, they’ve been out of stock since last month — probably because of the Neo — so that’s the end of that. You can probably find a refurb one. Same with the M3 and M4: if you can find one for around the same price as the Neo, especially with 16GB of RAM, you should get one of those. But they’re pretty thin on the ground, and I’d expect them to become thinner. (Keep an eye on Apple’s refurb site, though — a refurb M4 Air for $750 is pretty dang good.) The modern Air is unquestionably a better computer. The thing about $1,000 is it’s a lot more money than $600. $600 is already more than most non-Mac people want to spend on a laptop, but it’s a lot less than an Air, and the gap between the two is big enough that it’s harder to justify the jump unless you know you’re gonna need more than 8GB of RAM, if y...

QatarEnergy Declares Force Majeure As One-Fifth Of Global LNG Supply Goes Dark Qatar’s long-standing image as the world’s most reliable LNG supplier abruptly ended on Wednesday after QatarEnergy halted LNG production and declared force majeure to customers, a major shock to global gas markets given that Qatar accounts for 20% of global LNG exports, with 80% of those volumes to Asia. " Further to the announcement by QatarEnergy to stop production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and associated products, QatarEnergy has declared Force Majeure to its affected buyers ," QatarEnergy wrote in a press release on Wednesday morning. Qatar’s LNG chief Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi is confronting the biggest energy shocks of his career after an Iranian drone strike earlier this week forced the shutdown of Ras Laffan, Qatar’s top LNG export hub, for the first time in three decades. The most immediate consequence is reputational. Wall Street analysts say the drone attack may permanently weaken Qatar’s ability to command premium gas pricing and long-term contract terms, as customers, especially in Asia, rethink their exposure to U.S. LNG in the calm warm waters of the Gulf of America. The duration of the shutdown at the world’s leading LNG exporter is not yet known, but restarting gas liquefaction after a full shutdown can take up to two weeks, with another two weeks needed to return to full capacity. In other words, the shutdown and the time required for liquefaction plants to return to full capacity could last a month or more. In terms of flows, Qatar’s LNG exports mostly go to Asia. The latest data shows more than 80% of Qatar’s LNG is shipped to China, India, Japan, and South Korea. Europe is also another large customer. At the start of the week, European gas (TTF) futures nearly doubled on LNG disruptions from the Gulf area due to the Strait of Hormuz being paralyzed. BlackJack3D Bitcoin ( BTC-USD ) advanced sharply on Wednesday, climbing to its highest level in roughly a month as renewed momentum lifted the world’s largest cryptocurrency above the $73,000 mark. The digital asset briefly touched an intraday peak of $73,546, representing a gain of about 6.8% on the session and one of its strongest single-day moves in recent weeks. The rally pushed bitcoin to levels not seen since early February, signaling a rebound after a period of choppy trading. Market participants have been watching for signs that the cryptocurrency could regain upward momentum following a pullback earlier in the year. Despite the latest surge, bitcoin remains below several widely followed technical indicators, including its 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day moving averages. Those levels are often viewed by traders as key gauges of longer-term trend strength, suggesting the broader technical picture remains mixed even as prices recover. This article first appeared on GuruFocus. CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV) shares climbed about 7% in premarket trading after artificial intelligence search company Perplexity signed an agreement to use the cloud provider's data centers to develop new AI services. The arrangement is expected to expand CoreWeave's customer base as demand grows for infrastructure capable of handling AI inference, the process of running trained models to generate responses. CoreWeave's chief executive said the partnership reflects broader adoption of its AI-focused cloud platform by emerging technology firms. Under the agreement, Perplexity will deploy Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) GB200 NVL72-powered clusters to support its inference workloads. The companies indicated the infrastructure will be used to scale AI tools offered to enterprise and consumer users. CoreWeave also plans to implement Perplexity Enterprise Max internally, enabling employees to search web-based and company documents through AI-driven tools. The deal highlights continued investment in specialized cloud capacity as AI developers seek high-performance computing resources to support expanding applications.

Signs of economic resilience and cooling inflationary pressures are lifting stocks today. The US labor market continues to grow after the Feb ADP employment report showed employers added more jobs than expected. Also, the US service economy expanded at the fastest pace in 3.5 years last month, while service price pressures fell to an 11-month low. Stocks also have support on a report that Iran made indirect contact with the US to negotiate an end to the war, boosting hopes that the conflict could end sooner than expected. The NY Times reported that operatives from Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence used backchannels to contact the CIA a day after US-Israeli attacks began. However, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency called the report “pure falsehood and psychological warfare.” Stock gains are limited amid heightened global trade tensions after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said proposed 15% tariffs on goods imported into the US may take effect this week. Crude oil prices fell from sharp overnight gains and are little changed on the NY Times report that said Iranian operatives made an offer to the US to discuss terms for ending the conflict. Crude prices remained lower even after Iran denied the report. Crude oil prices were also undercut by carryover from Tuesday, when President Trump said the US will ensure the free flow of energy through the Strait of Hormuz with insurance guarantees and even naval escorts. However, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that “we will set fire to any ship attempting to pass through” the strait, which runs along Iran's coast an...

Europe’s largest trade union is trying to gain control of the works council at Elon Musk’s Tesla gigafactory near Berlin, in an industrial relations showdown marked by lawsuits and mutual accusations of slander. The works council, an elected body of employees that negotiates everything from working hours to pay deals with a company’s management, is considered an entrenched aspect of the German corporate world, particularly in the car industry. But it was a bone of contention at the Tesla plant in Grünheide, 19 miles (30km) south-east of Berlin, even before the gates opened almost four years ago. The plant, which employs about 10,000 workers and is the US electric carmaker’s only production site in Europe, has seen regular clashes between the turbo-capitalist approach of Tesla’s management and Germany’s tradition of a social market economy, which relies on worker representation and collective bargaining. Voting in elections to the works council, which is now controlled by non-trade union members, began on Monday and will close on Wednesday. View image in fullscreen Elon Musk at the Tesla factory in Germany in 2022. His managers are accused of being confrontational with workers. Photograph: Patrick Pleul/Reuters The face-off has been portrayed as a battle of wills between the century-old IG Metall union and Musk, who says it is threatening economic growth. The union has framed the fight as nothing less than an existential threat to European workers’ rights and accuses Musk, the world’s richest man, of wanting to “bust the union”. IG Metall says Tesla provides inadequate working conditions and lays off employees it has accused of shirking. It argues that a collective agreement to protect workers is needed. Tesla, in turn, says the union is interested only in expanding IG Metall’s membership. It rejects the idea that working conditions are poor and says it pays above average wages. Musk has said the outcome of the dispute could determine the future of the plant and whet...

But there's 401(k)-related decision you should be thinking about early on. Have you thought about funding a Roth 401(k)? Many 401(k) plans now offer both a traditional and Roth savings option. And it's important not to overlook the latter. As a refresher, with a traditional 401(k), your money goes in on a pre-tax basis. Investment gains are tax-deferred, while withdrawals are taxed. With a Roth 401(k), you don't get an up-front tax break on your contributions. But investment gains in a Roth 401(k) are yours to enjoy tax-free. And withdrawals are tax-free as well. Roth 401(k)s also offer another huge benefit -- avoiding required minimum distributions during retirement. That gives you more control over your money. But by forgoing a Roth 401(k), you give up not only the benefits just mentioned, but other less obvious perks. One thing many people don't realize is that Social Security benefits can be taxable in retirement at the federal level, and that your total income helps determine whether that's the case. Roth 401(k) withdrawals don't count as taxable income, though. So by funding a Roth 401(k), you could end up sparing yourself taxes on your Social Security checks. AdrianHancu/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Investment Thesis There are two major tailwinds to Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ), a legacy American construction and energy engineering equipment manufacturer. The consistent and macro one is that the Company is poised to benefit from President Trump's domestic industrial policy , increase in homebuilding activities, as well as the United States' global oil production push - but these macros are already priced in (to be discussed in the valuation part) since Trump's term, so this is not the thesis we will elaborate on today. The opportunistic tailwind is the "AI bottleneck play" that rotates upward of the supply chain—from - from GPUs components to AI data centers and, ultimately, electricity Eric Flaningam Major AI bottleneck is energy the West - Stanford University When AI infrastructure is being developed rapidly, we start to see "bottlenecks" that are limiting the Moore's Law being played out. Electricity is one of them. To simplify the problem of electricity in one sentence is: Traditional model of building the data center first, connecting to the grid after, is no longer feasible This is because the current grid infrastructure, which has been built for over a decade, can no longer handle the exponentially growing electricity demand, if not being destroyed. There are two major reasons: Transmission is a larger problem than generation The electricity demand of AI is constantly high and growing, and data centers run 24/7. However, the conventional electricity generation capacity is either being planned slowly or is "intermittent" which is the major characteristic of solar and wind. But in either case, they are "far from where the demands are", which makes transmission difficult and overloaded. If you see the below roadmap of conventional electricity generation, you will understand how many "lines" we need for the many gigawatt-hours of electricity we need. Eric Flaningam You can think of the transmission problem as a highw...

Torsten Asmus/iStock via Getty Images The market pain starts here The S&P 500 ( SP500 ) just closed under the key technical support at 100dma. This is the first close below 100dma since the April 2025 flash-crash, thus, technically, this is important. Note, the top was reached in October 2025, and since then, the S&P 500 ( SPX ) has been unable to sustainably break the 7000-level resistance. At the same time, it has been threatening to breach the 100dma support many times, especially recently during the month of February. So, what caused the breakdown? The unfolding US-Iran war, or specifically, the transition from Phase 1 of the war to Phase 2, based on my assessment. What are the implications? The S&P 500 is now technically vulnerable, and if the current geopolitical trigger persists, we could see a flash crash similar to April 2025, or around a 20% quick drawdown. The key variable to consider is the price of oil ( USO ) - if the unfolding war triggers a spike in the price of oil, the flash-crash scenario is likely inevitable. Yahoo The Phase One was benign Phase 1 of the current US/Israel/Iran conflict was benign for the financial markets. As I explained, this war has a deeper geopolitical objective, specifically with respect to China and Chinese energy security. However, the failed nuclear negotiation with Iran was the stated reason for the war. Specifically, a nuclear Iran is an existential threat to Israel, and Iran's advanced missiles program is a threat to the region, including Europe. The objective of Phase One was to induce an internally led regime change in Iran and, subsequently, to negotiate with the new, more US-friendly leadership. After Iran's Supreme Leader was killed, this scenario looked likely. However, it looks like Iran's is "led by the system", designed for succession. Thus, despite the fact that many leaders have been killed, it seems like the regime is still in control - and there are no signs of any internal rebellion. The US and Israel mod...
