Russell ended the day leading a Mercedes one-two from team-mate Kimi Antonelli and 0.785 seconds quicker than the first driver not in a Mercedes, Red Bull's Isack Hadjar. Russell said: "We knew we had a fast car beneath us. I don't think we ever anticipated it to be this fast, but Max wasn't there. "We had him down as our top rival and if you look at his pace difference historically over the last seven years to his team-mate, you would have expected him to be in that mix as well. "I think it was a bit of a perfect storm." There may be a significant element of truth to that, but there is no doubt that Mercedes have the fastest car and that they are going to take some beating for a while. McLaren also have a Mercedes engine but their fastest driver, Oscar Piastri in fifth, was more than 0.8secs slower than Russell. Most of McLaren's time loss was on the long 'straight' run between Turns Six and Nine of the Albert Park circuit. Mercedes were simply able to deploy more energy along there - because they arrived at Turn Six with their battery more highly charged. Team principal Andrea Stella said that the Mercedes was also faster in most of the corners but added: "How you exploit these power units to the best of their potential, this moves quite a lot of lap time." Why can McLaren not compete in this way yet? Because Mercedes are the works team. They built the engine, so for now have a more complete understanding of how it works. Mercedes' advantage is not just in power-unit management, however. They have also built a very good car. Stella said: "Mercedes are quick in the corners, not only in the straights. There are a few corners in which we can compete with them, but overall they are faster in the grip-limited sections." But he added that this could also be partly to do with engine usage. "What we see is that whenever we kind of maximise the power unit, somehow everything sort of works better and you go faster in the corners as well," he said.

Canopy Growth (CGC +3.36%) is a leader in the Canadian marijuana market. An early mover in the sector, the stock has gone through two massive price swings. Today, however, the stock is trading at around $1 per share, off from its all-time high of $568 by a whopping 99%. It may be time to consider selling the stock if you're sitting on material paper losses. Marijuana stocks haven't worked out the way Wall Street had hoped Wall Street often gets overly excited about hot investment ideas, pushing stocks to unrealistic extremes. That's exactly what happened with the marijuana sector, with a couple of massive stock rallies that priced stocks like Canopy Growth for complete perfection. But the marijuana business didn't prove to be quite as profitable as investors had hoped. Notably, competition in the legal marijuana space has been fierce. And illicit marijuana sales haven't stopped, so there are still competitors that don't have to deal with the costs of regulation and taxes. Canopy Growth, for its part, has yet to turn a sustainable profit. How much have you lost? To be fair, Canopy Growth has been inching closer and closer to black ink. But there are still several worrying facts to consider. For example, it recently recapitalized its balance sheet, which has left it in a stronger financial position. But the fact that it had to take this action isn't a particularly good sign. Meanwhile, it is working on an acquisition to be funded with a mix of cash and stock. The deal will strengthen Canopy's position in the medical marijuana space, but the cash being spent will weaken the balance sheet, and the stock issued will dilute existing shareholders. Reviewing the Department of Defense's daily digest of contract awards (as one does), you tend to get a good idea of who "the usual suspects" are at the Pentagon. Big defense names like RTX, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman make regular appearances on the list; big tech names like Microsoft or Palantir or Amazon Web Services will also pop up from time to time, hired to do military IT work. And then, every so often, an entirely unfamiliar name will arrive that causes you to sit up and take notice. That's what happened for me last week, when Liquid Robotics appeared on the list. Searching through the archives for the past 10 years, it turns out last week was the first time ever Liquid Robotics won a contract big enough to show up on the Pentagon's list (which covers all contracts $7.5 million and up). So what exactly is Liquid Robotics, I wondered? And what does it do? And why is the Japanese navy buying drone ships from it? Japan loves robots Because that's the substance of the contract I had stumbled upon. For $25 million, the U.S. Air Force had contracted to purchase 20 commercial unmanned surface vehicles (that's military-speak for drone warships) from Liquid Robotics, apparently for delivery to Japan as a Foreign Military Sale. It took a bit of digging, but in short order, all was made clear. Liquid Robotics, it turns out, is a subsidiary of Pentagon megacontractor Boeing (BA +4.08%), which bought the company back in December 2016 as "a market leader in autonomous maritime systems and developer of the Wave Glider ocean surface robot." It now resides within Boeing's Defense, Space & Security division. Liquid Robotics makes only one product, the Wave Glider USV (which makes it pretty clear which "commercial unmanned surface vehicles" Japan is buying). The trend is already changing the stakes for businesses that have traditionally had no need to borrow, introducing a new layer of stakeholders, obligations, and risks that are transforming how internet companies operate and how they are valued by investors. Bond investors, unlike equity investors, don’t seek out unlimited upside, they focus on being compensated fairly for taking on risks, including those related to overinvestment that leads to a glut in supply. In 2025, Alphabet, Amazon, Oracle , Meta and Microsoft issued about $121 billion in new debt via bonds, compared to $40 billion in 2020. And the pace is not expected to slow down anytime soon: Wall Street estimates show the AI-related bond supply could be in the range of $100 billion to $300 billion this year. Over the next three to five years, total data center investment could run $1.5 trillion to $3 trillion, according to some analyses.
