The Iran war set the markets back this past week, sending stocks in most sectors plummeting. In situations such as these, many investors sell first and ask questions later. The conflict will likely have an impact on businesses, besides the obvious reactions such as oil price increases, a rush to safe-haven assets such as gold and silver, and a boost for defense industry stocks. However, many of the companies that saw their shares drop in the past week aren't likely to be that affected by the conflict. As a research report from Morgan Stanley pointed out, in the wake of similar geopolitical shocks, on average, the S&P 500 has been up by approximately 2% after one month, up 6% after six months, and up 8% after 12 months. At moments like these, then, it makes sense to look at blue chip stocks -- such as Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Williams Companies (NYSE: WMB) -- and see if the dip is worth buying. The outlook for oil prices Oil prices have surged this year due to the growing tensions with Iran, which has now boiled over into an armed conflict. The war with Iran threatens global oil supplies. In addition to being a major oil producer, Iran has retaliated by attempting to impede oil exports from the Persian Gulf. About 20% of global oil supplies flow through the Strait of Hormuz, which borders Iran. The country has attacked crude-carrying ships passing through that key chokepoint. It has also used drones to attack oil infrastructure throughout the region. These attacks have driven up tanker shipping rates and caused insurance carriers to cancel coverage. Additionally, several energy companies have had to cut or suspend production due to safety issues or a lack of storage. If Iran continues to impede the flow of oil out of the Persian Gulf or destroys key regional oil infrastructure, crude prices could top $100 a barrel. 2024 is on pace to become another banner year for the stock market, with the benchmark S&P 500 delivering total returns of 17% year to date. However, the strong performance has been uneven and several stocks have yet to fully recover from 2022's drops. Roughly 30% of the index's components trade down so far in 2024, including some otherwise dependable dividend stocks. Unfortunately, some of those stocks may never fully recover. But there are at least two underperforming dividend stocks that show clear potential to bounce back. While they do, their dividends are strong enough to offer growing annual yields at attractive valuations. Let's take a closer look at why these two dividend stocks are worth doubling up on. 1. Academy Sports and Outdoors Academy Sports and Outdoors (NASDAQ: ASO) is a former military surplus retail chain that transformed itself into a sporting goods and outdoors retailer. The $3.9 billion company operates 284 stores located primarily in the Southern United States. Academy's stock price has fallen almost 19% so far in 2024 as its sales have stagnated. Management says Academy Sports' performance has been tamped down by consumers being challenged by the "current macroeconomic environment." Academy Sports initiated its public offering in October 2020, so the stock is still relatively young. But its operations are already profitable enough to justify paying out a quarterly dividend. At recent share prices, that $0.11 per share quarterly payout offers up an annual yield of 0.8%. The yield isn't much to entice income investors -- yet. But the company has already raised the dividend twice in two years, with bumps of 20% and 22.5%. Investors should have some confidence that that growth will continue. With any dividend-paying stock, prospective investors should be mindful of the payout ratio, too. The price of beef in the US is high, and a movement in the American Congress could severely impact JBS's business and the price of its shares. Valued at just under $600 million , the deal could create one of the three largest regional banks headquartered in New Jersey. The transaction is being done in conjunction with a second-step conversion where CLBK will transition to a fully public stock holding company. The deal is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year. Once Columbia Financial and Northfield are combined, their total assets will equal roughly $18 billion. Columbia currently operates 71 bank branches in New Jersey. Northfield controls 17 bank locations in New Jersey and an additional 20 in New York. Columbia Merger Presentation While the addition of the Northfield assets certainly has value for CLBK shareholders, the second-step conversion may unlock some additional potential for the company as well. The offering for new Columbia shares is expected to raise proceeds of $1.4 billion to $1.9 billion that it can use for loan growth, initiation of a dividend, and restructuring of its securities portfolio. I think CLBK may be worth initiating a small position ahead of the conclusion of the merger for the reasons discussed here.
