Linbury theatre, Royal Opera House, London The first UK visit for the company showcases the dancers’ elegance and versatility across three pieces of varying impact This small Oklahoman dance company, making its first visit to the UK, has been going for 70 years . For the last three decades its artistic director has been the Italian Marcello Angelini, who clearly sets standards high for his very finessed set of dancers (which includes Edward Truelove from England and a Scot, James Lachlan Murray ). That’s demonstrated especially in the opening piece of this triple bill, Classical Symphony by Yuri Possokhov, a Ukrainian choreographer now resident at San Francisco Ballet. Set to Prokofiev, Possokhov’s neoclassical dance has a bit of flex to it, a cheeky rock of the hips or other off-piste details, but always prioritises grace. For lead couple Nao Ota and Jun Masuda, it’s tricky, technical choreography, which they pull off with an absolute ease. The steps come in a long continuous flurry, but everything is neatly articulated with breezy elegance. Continue reading...

Government social care commissioner says system relying on exhausted unpaid carers to plug gaps in support UK politics live – latest updates Millions of unpaid carers in the UK are “living an agony” while propping up an outdated, fragmented and confusing social care system, Louise Casey, the head of the government’s adult social care commission, has said. Lady Casey, who is leading an independent review of adult social care, criticised a system that “still behaves as if we are living in 1948 and not 2026” by relying on female carers to plug gaps in services. For long-term Lucid investors, however, it's been a rocky road with the stock down a stunning 99% from its all-time high in late 2021. Now, with shares off 44% even since the start of the year and trading near an all-time low, this may look like a bargain stock. However, before you buy, consider the following. Lucid Group has struggled since its initial public offering (IPO) nearly six years ago. The company faces high cash burn as it rolls out new models and ramps up production capacity. In the first quarter, Lucid racked up an operating loss of $989 million, up from a $691 million loss in the same quarter last year. Meanwhile, its free cash flow was negative $1.44 billion. Joe Raedle/Getty Images News Federal Reserve Governor Stephen Miran believes that deregulation represents a positive supply shock that could help mitigate inflationary pressures, while declining population growth will ultimately prove disinflationary despite near-term concerns about labor market tightness. In a CNBC interview, Miran reflected on his time at the central bank and outlined his economic views, emphasizing that monetary policy operates with significant lags that should inform current rate decisions. Miran argued that regulations function as “infinite taxes” on economic activity and have been underappreciated in Fed modeling. “Being told you’re not allowed to do something versus you are allowed to do something is a very, very strong difference,” he said, noting that this perspective has gained traction internally at the Fed since his arrival. On population growth, Miran took a contrarian view to some of his colleagues, arguing that declining population growth is “unambiguously disinflationary or even eventually deflationary” based on historical and cross-country evidence. He pointed to housing as a key transmission mechanism, noting that “market rents in this country have been growing at a 1% rate for the last few years” and predicting that measured inflation in shelter costs will continue converging downward. The outgoing governor defended his consistent dissents calling for rate cuts at every meeting, emphasizing that monetary policy doesn’t affect the economy for twelve to eighteen months. “For any shock that’s hitting the economy today, you can’t think about what the effect in the next few months is,” Miran explained. “You need to think about what the effect twelve to eighteen months out will be." Miran pushed back against characterizations that his dovish stance simply reflected the administration’s preferences, noting that White House officials had at times signaled they wanted rates even lower than his projections while at other times suggesting he...

krblokhin/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Two and a half months had passed since my previous coverage of XPO, Inc. ( XPO ). And after its stubborn uptrend, the stock is below $200 again. This was in line with my view of its severe overpricing. Despite the 3% decrease, the stock remains expensive. There are market opportunities to counter the risks emerging amid intensifying inflation. Fundamentals are still sound. Yet, this still doesn't justify an upgrade. XPO Q1 2026: A Solid Start Despite Market Swings The freight and logistics industry has been on a roller coaster ride in the past five years. But recently, there have been external disruptions that amplified inflation, freight demand, production, and consumption. Yet, many players in the less-than-truckload or LTL market continue to take advantage of softer market dynamics with their strong network capacity, customer base, competitive edge, and prudent fleet management. XPO, Inc. is a perfect example. This was evident in its most recent performance. In Q1 2026, its operating revenue amounted to $2.10B , up by 7.3% YoY from $1.95B. This YoY increase was higher than in my previous coverage at only 4.8%. In fact, this was its highest YoY revenue growth in quarters, which showed its sustained growth. LTL market recovery played a big role here. You can see that shipments increased. They became lighter, but volume rose, so both shipments and pounds per day increased. The policy easing cycle during H2 2025 increased business and consumer confidence. It bolstered economic activity, which also bolstered consumption and production. LTL market undercapacity after a series of shutdowns in 2025 lowered the LTL supply and competition. This helped XPO capture more customers. It benefited from higher fuel surcharges. Lastly, I think it somehow benefited from stubborn inflation and skyrocketing oil prices. Many businesses may have been forced to do inventory restocking before the full-blast impact of higher inflation and oil pr...
