Super Micro Computer , (NASDAQ:SMCI) which develops and sells modular AI server and storage solutions closed Wednesday at $34.65, up 24.51%. The stock moved higher after fiscal Q3 results showed an earnings beat, improving margins, and strong AI data center demand. Investors are watching management’s above-consensus revenue outlook and AI infrastructure growth narrative next. Trading volume reached 125.4 million shares, coming in about 228% higher than its three-month average of 38.2 million shares. Super Micro Computer IPO'd in 2007 and has grown 3,855% since going public. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) gained 1.46% to finish Wednesday at 7,365, its first close above 7,300. The Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) advanced 2.02% to close at 25,839. Within computer hardware, industry peers Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) closed at $238.81 (+10.40%) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE:HPE) finished at $30.37 (+1.10%) as investors reassessed AI server demand. Super Micro’s earnings report was a relief for investors, and the stock reaction proved it. Shares are still 70% off 2024 highs after investors fled due to several past issues. Investors are trying to get beyond past internal control problems and an ongoing investigation into whether its co-founder was separately involved with illegal server shipments to China. Welcome back to Canada Daily, the newsletter on business, economics and politics from Vancouver to Montreal and beyond. If this was forwarded to you, sign up . “Transitory” is something of a dirty word for central bankers. But they’re still obsessed with it. During the pandemic, it was the go-to description for what they thought would be short-lived inflation pressures caused by supply-chain bottlenecks and shuttered businesses. But there was nothing temporary about the shock. Thanks in part to massive monetary and fiscal stimulus, the rate of inflation surged to 8.1% by mid-2022 in Canada. It didn’t get stuck below 3% until 2024. The Bank of Canada is likely replaying that episode as it reviews its policy framework this year. The document communicates how officials view the institution’s mission over the next half decade. It’s also an important credibility signal, helping to explain why policymakers are, or aren’t, adjusting borrowing costs at any given moment. That means a big part of the renewal exercise — which is conducted jointly with the federal government — is spelling out options for policymakers, even when price pressures appear to be moving away from the bank’s longstanding 2% target. The Bank of Canada’s rate-setting council can’t afford to be too rigid. “If you don’t have that flexibility, you’re going to react perhaps too harshly to what is a global shock, as opposed to being patient and allowing it to run off and not disrupt the domestic economy too much,” Lawrence Schembri, a former deputy Bank of Canada governor, told me. Sometimes, the right move is to do nothing — particularly when there’s slack in an economy that’s being hit by multiple supply-shock forces like, say, tariffs or high oil prices because somebody decided to start a war in the Middle East. “You don’t want to overreact in these types of environments,” said Paul Beaudry, another former deputy governor. As for the framework itself, it will likely remain much the same. Changing the bank’...

Albemarle Corp. shares surged after the lithium producer delivered better-than-expected quarterly results as higher prices and stronger volume lifted sales and earnings. The North Carolina-based company, one of the world’s top miners of the battery metal, is starting to benefit from a price recovery driven by a strong demand outlook for electric vehicles and large-scale battery storage after years of oversupply. Albemarle’s lithium production will rise this year, the company said in a statement late on Wednesday. Still, sales volumes are expected to remain roughly flat after customers drew down inventories in 2025. The shares were up more than 5% after the close of regular trading. The stock has more than tripled in the past 12 months. Soaring energy demand from data centers has set the stage for mega installations of batteries to global grids this year. That — combined with the continued clamor for EVs — is supporting lithium, the metal that’s become synonymous with electrified transportation and the storage of renewable energy. Read More: Cheap Batteries Are Driving a Global Energy Storage Revolution Albemarle maintained its full-year capital spending forecast of $550 million to $600 million, broadly in line with analyst expectations. Albemarle said it delivered $40 million in cost and productivity improvements in the quarter and remains on track for $100 million to $150 million in savings this year. First-quarter net sales rose 33% from a year earlier to $1.43 billion, just ahead of the average analyst estimate. Adjusted Ebitda jumped to $663.8 million, topping expectations for $468.2 million and more than doubling the result of a year earlier. The energy storage unit led the gains, helped by higher lithium pricing, volumes and cost improvements. The company’s conference call is scheduled for 8 a.m. New York time Thursday.
