In the world’s most populous country, where over 60% survive on free food grain and graduate unemployment is very high , one state is offering cash incentives to fund a baby boom. “It’s an utterly stupid move in every possible examinable way,” said political scientist Devesh Kapur. To be clear, Andhra Pradesh is right to be worried about a graying economy. Like with its neighbors in south India, the state’s fertility rate has long dropped below replacement level and the working-age population is on the decline. In 20 years, the proportion of citizens aged 60 and above is estimated to more than double from 10% to 23% of population . So, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has made a striking pivot. “At one time, I worked towards family planning. But today, children themselves have become wealth,” Naidu said at a public event last week. Earlier this year, he announced a cash payout to families having a second child. Now the state will offer, among other incentives, cash ranging from 30,000 rupees ($300) to 40,000 rupees to families that have a third and fourth child. The money is barely sufficient to cover pre-natal and delivery expenses and may at best stretch to support infant years. The REIT sector outpaced the Dow Jones Industrial Average (+7.2%) but fell short of the double-digit gains from the S&P 500 (+10.5%) and NASDAQ (+15.3%). The market cap weighted Vanguard Real Estate ETF ( VNQ ) fell slightly short of the average REIT in April (+8.60% vs. 8.90%) but has solidly outperformed year-to-date (10.03% vs. +6.31%). The spread between the 2026 FFO multiples of large-cap (17.8x) and small-cap REITs (12.1x) widened in April as multiples expanded 1.5 turns for large caps and 0.8 turns for small caps. Investors currently need to pay an average of 47.1% more for each dollar of FFO from large-cap REITs relative to small-cap REITs. The budget airline easyJet has said its summer holiday bookings are lagging behind last year as the Iran war weights on consumer confidence and has left passengers waiting later to book trips. The carrier said it had to spend an unexpected extra £25m on jet fuel in March after the start of the US and Israel’s war on Iran. However, easyJet said it was not experiencing any disruption to fuel supplies, adding that it had its usual visibility of supplies over a rolling four-week period. It does not expect to cancel any further flights this summer despite the warning in April by Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary that the UK was the most vulnerable country in Europe to potential jet fuel shortages should the strait of Hormuz remain closed. The airline said that customers should “book with confidence” amid signs that worries over fuel shortages and resulting flight cancellations were discouraging travellers, echoing comments from rivals including Ryanair. The airline said customers were still reluctant to book far ahead of time, with many waiting until the month of departure to commit to travelling. “We continue to see positive late bookings since the conflict began; however, overall bookings for the summer period are behind where they were at this point last year,” it said. The company has hedged 72% of its fuel needs for the next six months, covering the busy summer period up to the end of September. However, it has temporarily suspended short-term hedging as a result of “elevated near-term fuel prices”. It came as easyJet reported a £552m pre-tax loss for the six months to 31 March compared with a loss of £394m in the same period a year earlier. UK Leads European Nations In Hiring Over-50s Over the past two decades, ageing populations , rising retirement ages and higher education levels have contributed to rising employment rates among workers aged 55 and over across OECD countries. Yet many workplaces are still designed around shorter careers, leading many people to leave work earlier than they need or want to. This deepens the demographic pressures facing ageing societies, including labor shortages, as early exits reduce the number of employees and inflate public welfare and healthcare costs. The OECD argues that employers play a decisive role in enabling longer working lives through hiring practices, access to training, job quality and workplace conditions. To help organizations assess and improve their approach, the OECD recently launched a Longevity Readiness Tool , which benchmarks policies and practices across sectors and countries to identify where action is most needed. As Statista's Anna Fleck details below , the data reveals wide differences in how countries support older workers. In hiring, the United Kingdom ranked highest in Europe in 2023, with people aged 50 and over accounting for roughly 12 percent of new hires. Finland followed at 9 percent, while Denmark and Estonia each recorded 6 percent. Poland ranked lowest at just 2 percent.
