JasonDoiy/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images Roblox ( RBLX ) on Monday announced two new strategic initiatives to boost the creation of RPG, strategy, and shooter games, as it aims to target users above the age of 18 and cater to the demands of the platform's growing audience. The company announced the “Incubator” program, which is expected to help experienced teams refine promising concepts of novel games into polished, scalable, commercially successful games over a course of six months. The “Jumpstart” program is expected to help creators who are new to Roblox learn the platform and aid experienced creators in exploring novel games. " RPG, strategy, and shooter games are heavily underrepresented despite strong demand from older age groups. We’re seeking bold games in these core genres, plus unexpected genre mash-ups and projects that blend traditional mechanics with Roblox’s avatars, social features, and cross-platform support ," said Vlad Loktev, Chief Creator Ecosystem Officer at Roblox. The programs will aim to develop games that come with unique game mechanics and challenges in these genres while also having a distinct look and feel from classic games on the platform, Roblox said. The company said it is also investing in and supporting novel games already on the platform or in development, in addition to the newly announced programs. Kowtowing to US foreign policy in Iraq and Afghanistan had disastrous consequences. Why are leaders making the same mistake all over again? Here is the sort of analysis you’re being served up by our esteemed commentariat. Keir Starmer’s positioning on the Iran war, we are told, reveals a prime minister with no political compass. True, but talk about burying the lede. The story here is not Starmer’s lack of political acumen. British involvement in the Iran war is not a policy question on which reasonable people might disagree, like raising a tax here or spending a bit more money there. This is a grave crime. Yet all the pressure on Starmer seems to arrive from one direction. He “should have backed America from the very beginning”, declares Tony Blair, apparently eager for his successor to emulate his own record of dragging Britain into US-led catastrophes widely condemned as illegal . Donald Trump’s sidekick Nigel Farage, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch and the rightwing press make much the same complaint. Owen Jones is a guardian columnist Continue reading...

Key Points Refinancing in retirement could lead to lower monthly mortgage payments. You may have an easier time managing your budget if your housing costs drop. Be aware of the pitfalls of refinancing later in life. The $23,760 Social Security bonus most retirees completely overlook › Mortgage rates, for the most part, have been falling since the start of the year . That's not necessarily enough to help first-time homebuyers enter the market, though, since housing prices are still considerably higher than they were a few years ago. But if you already own a home, things are different. In that case, falling mortgage rates could open the door to refinancing. And that holds true whether you're retired or still working. Will AI create the world's first trillionaire? Our team just released a report on the one little-known company, called an "Indispensable Monopoly" providing the critical technology Nvidia and Intel both need. Continue » Retirees need to think about refinancing a bit more carefully, though. It's not a bad idea, but there are pitfalls to consider. The case for refinancing in retirement when mortgage rates fall Refinancing in retirement offers a number of benefits. First, you can lower your monthly mortgage payments, which can free up money for other expenses. A lot of retirees unfortunately don't manage to accumulate a lot of savings. If that's your situation, and you're living most on Social Security, you may be struggling to manage all of your expenses. If you're able to cut your mortgage payments by refinancing, you should have more money for your remaining expenses, from food to utility bills to healthcare. The result? Less constant stress. Furthermore, if you carried high-interest debt into retirement, falling mortgage rates could open the door to a cash-out refinance. This is different from a regular refinance. With a standard mortgage refinance, you borrow the amount you owe on your existing home loan. With a cash-out refinance, you borrow more than ...

Gen 1 Chevrolet Bolt EV LT in the street. Gen 2 in production. photosvit/iStock Editorial via Getty Images General Motors Company ( GM ), the No. 1 U.S. automaker, has lately been decelerating its push toward producing battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) based on the slowing of U.S. consumer demand for the zero-emission, plug-in technology. A notable exception is the latest version of GM’s Chevrolet Bolt for the 2027 model year, which has begun rolling off the assembly line at the automaker’s Fairfax, Kansas plant near Kansas City. The new model, now in its second generation, has been arriving at U.S. dealerships. The starting price is just below $29,000, with fancier versions and features such as hands-free driving, costing about $39,000. 2027 Chevy Bolt (General Motors) Bolt’s price is slightly less than the $31,000 for Nissan Motor Co.’s Leaf, making it arguably the least expensive BEV in the U.S. market. Unlike its predecessor, the latest generation Bolt will use an NACS charging port—introduced by Tesla ( TSLA ) and permitting access to Tesla charging stations. In an unusual move, GM decided in advance to limit production of the new Bolt to a maximum of eighteen months to two years, irrespective of how well the model is selling. The reason, GM says, is to make room in Fairfax for two internal combustion models, the Chevrolet Equinox (now built in Mexico) and a next-gen Buick SUV to replace the Buick Envision, now imported from China. Unlike their predecessors, the Equinox and new Buick won’t be subject to import tariffs under current rules, thereby improving their potential profitability. Proof of concept Though GM doesn’t disclose the profitability of individual models, it’s unlikely the new Bolt can be a big moneymaker for the automaker. Which doesn’t mean GM engineers and sales analysts won’t be closely watching the new model’s performance in the market. The point of the project isn’t Bolt’s profitability, but rather an understanding of whether consumers will r...

Readers respond to Aditya Chakrabortty’s article about the decline in healthy life expectancy in the UK How could I fault Aditya Chakrabortty’s account of the failure to prioritise the nation’s health as he cites me as its inspiration ( This is a life and death story for the UK – so why is it being brushed under the carpet?, 6 March ). However, it is important to emphasise that the government is well aware of the gross health inequities that scar our nation and limit lives as well as economic prosperity, but chooses not to prioritise them. The ministerial response last month to the House of Lords report on ageing contains this shocking statistic : a girl born in Barnsley can expect an average of 53 years of good health, whereas one born in Wokingham can look forward to 71 healthy years – an extra 18 years. Throughout the country deprivation accelerates ageing, which for many means an unnecessary premature exit from the labour market and premature need for social care. But the main focus of health policy is the manifesto commitment to reduce NHS waiting times, a target that has very little impact on health inequity. Instead, a radical programme is required to prevent the largely social and commercial determinants of ill-health, such as poverty, poor diets, lack of exercise, and air pollution. Continue reading...

peshkov/iStock via Getty Images By Mandy Xu Cross-Asset Volatility: Implied volatilities spiked across asset classes last week as the Iran conflict escalated, with oil prices jumping over 35%. Oil volatility surged higher, with 1M implied vol up almost 40 pts wk/wk to a high of 104% - highest since 2020 (when oil prices went negative) and trading near the peak volatility we saw during the 2008 GFC. What’s even more notable is the widening volatility risk premium, with WTI 1M implied vol trading at almost double the level of realized volatility (at 54%), suggesting fears of further escalation in this crisis. Oil volatility risk premium (1M) is currently at its highest level on record, going back 20 years. Oil skew has continued to invert further on demand for upside calls, with the cost of calls now reaching a record high relative to puts. Equity volatility jumped higher last week, with the weaker-than-expected US jobs number adding fuel to “stagflation” worries. The VIX® index gained almost 10 pts to 29%, far outpacing the increase in SPX® 1M realized volatility, which increased marginally by 0.5 pt to 13.8%. Rates vol gained as well, with inflation risk adding to the uncertainty over the rates outlook. Fed expectations have dialed back meaningfully, with traders now pricing just ~1.5 cuts for the year (vs. 2.5 a week ago). Equity Volatility: Given the relatively modest SPX index decline of -2% last week, the “expected” VIX index increase was only +2.4 pts. Instead, the VIX index jumped 4x that. The outsized increase in the VIX index was a combination of a higher bid for optionality reflecting the increased macro and geopolitical uncertainty (contributing +4.0 pts to the VIX index), as well as a notable increase in hedging demand going into the weekend, with investors selling calls to fund downside protection (contributing +3.3 pts). See Exhibit 2. This can also be seen in the continued steepening in SPX skew, with 1M skew (25-delta ratio) trading at its highest lev...

osheaphotography/iStock via Getty Images Lockheed Martin’s ( LMT ) Sikorsky unit said it is preparing to begin producing a new variant of its S-92 helicopter while several operators have renewed long-term maintenance agreements for the aircraft, reflecting continued demand in offshore energy and government transport markets. Sikorsky plans to build an initial production batch of the S-92A+ helicopter, the latest version of the heavy-lift aircraft used for head-of-state transport, offshore energy operations and search-and-rescue missions. Sikorsky S-92 (Offshore Helicopter Services) The helicopters will be manufactured at the company’s facilities in Stratford, Connecticut, and Owego, New York. A newly signed government customer, described as the 14th country to order the aircraft for head-of-state transport, placed an order for two helicopters. Sikorsky said it will assemble those aircraft along with three additional S-92A+ units. The company said its production lines have capacity to build up to 12 S-92A+ helicopters annually. Sikorsky delivered two S-92 aircraft to head-of-state customers in Asia and the Middle East in 2025. Aircraft upgrades The S-92A+ version includes several technical updates compared with earlier models. The helicopter will incorporate a new Phase IV main gearbox designed to extend service intervals, with a projected operating life of more than 6,000 flight hours before overhaul. The aircraft will also use upgraded GE CT7-8A6 ( GE ) engines that provide additional power, enabling operations in high-temperature and high-altitude environments. Operators renew support agreements Separately, Sikorsky said several operators have renewed long-term support agreements covering S-92 fleets. Six operators have signed multi-year extensions of the company’s Total Assurance Program, which provides maintenance coverage and replacement parts under a fixed cost-per-flight-hour arrangement. Bristow, the largest operator of S-92 helicopters, renewed a contract c...

While I accept that Emma Loffhagen may have tried skiing once and hated it, I disagree with most of her conclusions regarding this activity (The hill I will die on: People who ski have more money than sense, 7 March). In the past it was certainly a sport exclusive to the wealthy, but today it is enjoyed by people at all economic levels. It is possible to rent boots, skis, helmets and clothing that is specially designed for cold weather. Holiday packages and lessons are also available. Emma says that she has yet to hear a sensible explanation for why it is so popular. I had my first lesson at 45 with a group of six-year-olds and was hooked. I went on to take lessons, and the following year went on an advanced course that was a very steep learning curve. It is the sense of accomplishment that one gets from matching one’s skills against gravity and the mountain, as well as the concentration that is required. It is also a great way to forget about your problems and de-stress. I can remember standing on top of a mountain in the sunshine with only the sound of birds and the wind, with a view across hundreds of snow-covered mountain tops. I agree that it can be seen as elitist and the bars are noisy, but I have had some wonderful meals halfway up a mountain with some great people, most of whom didn’t go to public school. I finally retired from skiing at the age of 80, having damaged my knee in the only accident I ever had in 35 years. I still walk fine. I will admit to one negative fact about skiing. Ski boots weigh a tonne and when you take them off at the end of the day, it has to be the greatest relief ever. David Morgale Edgware, London Emma Loffhagen’s article on skiing brought to mind the aphorism: “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” John Carter Wimbledon, London Emma Loffhagen appears to mistake the glossy resort circus for skiing itself. Yes, there are people sipping champagne on Alpine terraces while e...
