Vibe Check, a free and anonymous alternative to AI, talks teens through consent, boundaries and apologies Val Odiembo volunteers at her former high school a few times a month, teaching teens about consent and healthy relationships. Now a sophomore at Rhode Island College, 19-year-old Odiembo isn’t much older than the students she’s teaching – which she thinks makes it easier for the high schoolers to come to her with their questions. But she knows she isn’t the only source they’re consulting. “A lot of them confide in AI,” she said. A recent UK study found that one in 10 young adults has consulted AI for sexual health information, and a 2025 Pew Research Center report showed that one in five teens have had a romantic relationship with a chatbot . The head honcho thinks splurging nearly $10 on a beverage during a cost-of-living crisis is fine for a ‘special experience’. It’s time to offer my own valuable advice I don’t mean to vent, but what is up with Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol’s obscenely large compensation package? Niccol, who joined the company in 2024, is one of the best-paid executives in the US, raking in $96m (£70m) in just his first four months on the job . The man makes 6,666 times more than the company’s typical employee, according to a 2025 Executive Paywatch report . He also regularly commutes to work via private jet. Can’t expect a strategic genius to live next to the office like the rest of the hoi polloi. Still, while he might be good at flogging drinks, Niccol apparently has trouble reading a room. As the cost of living surges , and the federal minimum wage remains at $7.25 , the CEO is getting roasted for calling a $9 coffee “ a really affordable premium experience ”. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Niccol noted that the K-shaped economy, in which higher-income households are thriving and splurging while the bottom half struggles, isn’t really affecting business . With most major European cities well-served by trains and buses, bringing US transit up to par would cost $4.6tn The only train station in Houston , the US ’s fourth-largest city and one of the fastest-growing conurbations in the country, is a diminished, morose sight. Intercity trains arrive at this squat, shed-like Amtrak building, which cringes in the shadows of roaring highways, just three times a week. That such a meager train station could ostensibly serve a metropolitan area of about 7 million people is a stark symbol of how the sprawling, car-dominated US has fallen behind cities around the world where people can rely on extensive, high-quality public transport to get around. The lake in northwestern China’s Qinghai province is famous for its mirror-like surface, formed as a result of the water’s high salt content. It was selected by an authoritative Chinese geography magazine as being among the top must-visit sites in China and received around 40,000 visitors daily last year. However, some people have complained that an...

In the UK capital, Bomb Crater Pond is full of wildlife, while scientists studying land obliterated by recent Russian blasts 1,500 miles away have seen ‘how quickly nature begins to heal itself’ In February 1945, towards the end of the second world war, a German V2 rocket struck Walthamstow Marshes in east London. The explosion tore a crater into the marshland. Left untouched, it slowly filled with water, sediment … and life. Today, this wartime scar has become a thriving pond. “It’s small but it really punches above its weight,” says Luke Boyle, a ranger for the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, as he kneels at the edge to examine aquatic plants sprouting their early spring shoots. “We can’t manage the hydrology here, so it is actually a vital part of the ecosystem – it supports a range of plants, insects and amphibians, more than you might expect,” he says. Saudi Arabian venture capital firms are pressing ahead with fundraising and deployment as they navigate disruptions from the regional conflict. Riyadh-based Khwarizmi Ventures has secured more than $70 million for the first close of its second fund and has already begun investing, Managing Partner Abdulaziz Al-Turki said. Sadu Capital is targeting a roughly $70 million fund of its own this year, according to Managing Director Salem Washeely . The plans come amid a tentative ceasefire in the Iran war, which saw Tehran target assets in Arab states across the Persian Gulf in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes that began in February. The conflict roiled global energy markets, and Saudi Arabia’s quarterly economic growth slowed to its lowest pace since mid-2024. The turbulence has also filtered through to venture capital firms. Startup funding in the Middle East and North Africa was flat year-on-year at $799 million in the first quarter, according to data platform Magnitt, as international investor participation slowed. Against that backdrop, local firms are stepping in to fill the gap left by foreign investors. Government-backed funds including Saudi Venture Capital Co. and Jada Fund of Funds — as well as family offices and domestic institutions, are increasing support for startups. The move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader effort to expand venture capital and startup funding as part of the Vision 2030 economic diversification agenda. Government-linked entities make up about a third, Al-Turki said, underscoring a broader shift toward local capital. “What was more theoretical five years ago is clearly becoming the reality.” Sadu, which is targeting $100 million in assets under management by year-end,...
