New video from Iranian state media shows a missile slamming into a compound in southern Iran, as evidence mounted that the US military was most likely responsible for the February 28 attack on a girls’ school that left more than 160 dead, mostly children. The footage, published Sunday by the Mehr News Agency, was titled “The moment when Israeli and American terrorists struck #Minab school”. Video shows a munition consistent with a Tomahawk cruise missile striking an area as black smoke rose from other nearby locations. Screams from witnesses can be heard as the missile hits its target. The US is the only country known to use Tomahawk missiles. Advertisement The strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School, which had the highest reported civilian death toll since the war began, has come under staunch criticism from the UN and human rights monitors. Iran has blamed Israel and the United States for the blast. The school was hit at the same time that the US was bombing a nearby Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) naval base.

Asia’s governments will have to stretch their budgets or risk unleashing an inflation shock as the deepening conflict in the Middle East pushes oil prices past $100 a barrel. That could raise new credit risks for emerging markets, warned Fitch Ratings, as higher oil prices bloat subsidy and import bills and disrupt remittances, tourism and investment flows. It tagged India and the Philippines as among the most at risk, with net fossil fuel imports exceeding 3% of their gross domestic product. “The region is at the epicenter of the energy security shock, and faces potential stagflation if disruptions persist,” said Nomura Holdings Inc. economist Sonal Varma . “The next month could be make or break.” Asia will likely rely on its fiscal policy for the first line of defense, through a mix of higher subsidies to consumers and transport operators, as well as cuts to fuel excise taxes or import tariffs on crude oil and refined products. More fiscal spending on subsidies could force cuts elsewhere, she added. Asian economies are the most reliant on crude passing through the Strait of Hormuz, leaving many exposed to energy shortages and price spikes. Public debt burdens were already elevated in the run up to the Middle East war, meaning governments have limited fiscal space to absorb new shocks. But the cost of inaction could be just as damaging, with inflation set to accelerate sharply and dampen consumer spending that’s crucial to driving economic growth. Central banks across developing Asia are facing a sudden shift in their policy outlook, with markets betting they may have to delay their easing cycles, if not abandon them entirely. The Indian rupee, Indonesian rupiah and Philippine peso all fell to record lows versus the US dollar on Monday. Emerging Asia bonds were swept along by the global selloff, as investors priced in more hawkish views for regional central banks. Indonesia’s 2-year yield jumped by 14 basis points, while a similar-dated Thai yield rose by 10 basis ...

Key Drivers Stock selection in financials, information technology and consumer discretionary contributed to relative performance, while health care stock selection detracted. Our short positions in the consumer discretionary sector contributed the most to performance, while our one short position in the utilities sector detracted modestly. Summary We believe above-average equity market valuations are likely to lead to long-term returns below historical averages, but we remain focused on finding individual businesses that are mispriced. If we are in a lower return equity market, alpha generation in both the long and short books is even more important to achieving satisfactory returns over time. Market and portfolio review Equity markets continued to move higher in Q4, with the Russell 1000 Index increasing 2.41% to end the year up 17.37%. From a sector perspective, health care (+11.2%) was the top-performing sector this quarter, as it seemed to garner renewed investor attention given depressed valuations and several quarters of increased uncertainty. Communication services (+6.1%) was the next-best-performing sector, solely driven by the performance of Alphabet (+29%), which composes approximately 50% of the sector. Sectors that declined tended to lean defensive, including real estate (-2.8%), utilities (-1.5%) and consumer staples (-0.4%). The strategy outperformed the long-only benchmark in Q4, helped by nearly 9 percentage points of positive long-short spread (the performance of our long positions relative to the performance of our short positions), with both the long and short portfolios adding alpha relative to the Russell 1000 Index. It was a similar story for the ful...
