Thailand approved 958 billion baht ($29 billion) of investment projects, led by TikTok System (Thailand) Co.’s planned expansion of data infrastructure as the country pushes to become a regional hub for artificial intelligence and cloud services. TikTok’s 842 billion-baht project will add servers and expand data storage and processing facilities across Bangkok and the neighboring provinces of Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao, according to a statement Wednesday from the Board of Investment. The plan also includes digital literacy and e-commerce training programs. Other approved projects included a 46 billion-baht data center backed by UAE-based DAMAC Group and a 24.6 billion-baht facility by Singapore-based Bridge Data Centres . The investments underscore intensifying competition across Southeast Asia for AI-related infrastructure as global technology firms ramp up spending on data centers and cloud services. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has pledged to accelerate approvals to support the country’s digital infrastructure build-out. The BOI added nine projects to its FastPass program as well, which is intended to speed up approvals and permits for selected investments. The additions bring the program’s total investment value to 223 billion baht.

From jugs to sticks, portable to refurbished models, which blenders are worth your money (and your fruit)? • The best (and worst) chef’s knives – tested • In the US? Check out our top-rated blenders there Eating your five-a-day can be tricky – let alone the 10 a day recommended by some. However, a decent blender can push you in the right direction by blitzing up healthy, wholesome soups or nutritious smoothies to start the day right. Unlike many kitchen appliances, most blenders are economical to run – so won’t increase your bills dramatically. Some can even heat your soup for tuppence (and we’ve tested them all to make sure that they’re energy-efficient). However, the difference in functions, versatility and maintenance can be startling. I put 10 blenders from some of the most well-known manufacturers through their paces to separate the smooth operators from the far-from-brilliant buys. The Cal State Northridge player has attracted millions of views for his hair flicks and dismissive waves. He says navigating the fallout has been a career of its own “I think people are really enamored with me because you don’t often see someone like me – animated, flamboyant – but still able to back it up on the volleyball court,” says Jordan Lucas, the outside hitter for Cal State Northridge’s men’s team. Although college volleyball has a devoted following and can attract big crowds – 92,000 fans went to see Nebraska take on Omaha in 2023 – it doesn’t usually attract the same attention as basketball or football. That changed last month though when clips of Lucas’s “flamboyant” play – he’s fond of celebrating with a flick of his hair or a dismissive wave at his opponents – went viral, amassing millions of views on social media. College athletes enjoying social media fame is hardly new: stars such as Paige Bueckers, Harper Murray, Olivia Dunne and Shedeur Sanders all had their viral moments. But Lucas’s case is different. It isn’t just about the highlights, it’s about the conversation surrounding them. Lucas is gay, and that fact has become inseparable from how audiences engage with his game. Continue reading...

Lerone Martin’s new book offers fascinating insight into the civil rights icon’s younger years Lerone Martin, a prominent scholar of Black religious history, leads the Martin Luther King Jr Research and Education Institute at Stanford University. His new book, Young King : The Making of Martin Luther King Jr, grew from “professional and personal” roots. Professionally, Martin “started coming across things that I had never seen before” about the civil rights leader’s childhood in Atlanta, his years at Morehouse College, and his time at Crozer Theological Seminary in Upland, Pennsylvania. One key episode happened in 1944, when King was 15. Travelling north from Georgia, he spent a summer working in the tobacco fields of Simsbury, Connecticut . It’s known as a transformative stay, vital in King’s eventual decisions to follow his father as a preacher and to fight for civil rights. Nonetheless, Martin found an underexploited resource. Cassian Joubert’s remarkable story was recently first told publicly by his mother and father – Keishera and Greg Joubert – in a 1 May video published on social media by the Orlando Health Women’s Institute, which employs the surgeon that led the baby boy’s prenatal operation. Products that strike the right balance of wearable coverage with adequate sun protection There are two things I invariably reach for at this lovely time of year: a trench coat and tinted sunscreen. The life-changing appearance of sunlight – if not quite blazing heat – means that most of us are venturing outdoors for longer periods while perhaps lightening our makeup load a little to be more seasonally appropriate. A tinted sunscreen in the right formula can kill two – or even three – birds with one stone, offering some makeup coverage, lighter moisture and high-factor sun protection in one portable product. Garnier Ambre Solaire makes lots of terrific facial sunscreens at very good prices. The newish Vitamin C Wonder Tint SPF50 (£9.99) is among their best. Available in light, medium and dark, it’s a silky sunscreen that packs enough glycerin to moisturise skin as well as protect it, making it a good choice for drier skin types. The pocket-friendly bottle is compact and practical if, like me, you’re likely to throw on your makeup on the move. The three shades are inadequate, but give a sheer, natural-looking tint to most wearers. Continue reading...

Director Baz Luhrmann, Jim Broadbent and more recall filming the record-breaking movie Moulin Rouge! was a whirlwind of a film, an extravagant assault on the senses that reinvigorated the musical. The doomed love affair between Satine (Nicole Kidman), a glamorous cabaret star and courtesan, and Christian (Ewan McGregor), an impoverished English poet, in turn-of-the-century Paris plays out in feverish song-and-dance numbers made up of medleys of iconic pop songs. By the time it was released in 2001, the Australian director Baz Luhrmann had already perfected his signature style with Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet – a blend of frantic editing, over-the-top visuals and contemporary music. Moulin Rouge! – the final film in his Red Curtain trilogy – took this up a notch. Continue reading...

Carbon Neutral, Speech Negative: Amsterdam Bans Ads Featuring Meat & Fossil Fuels Authored by Jonathan Turley, In “ The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage, ” I write about how censorship often becomes an insatiable appetite once countries go down the road of speech regulation. There is no better example than the Dutch and their r ecent ban on public ads for meat and fossil fuels. Activists have imposed similar limitations on advertising for products in the United States, from alcohol to tobacco. However, the Dutch law reflects how this tendency can metastasize into shielding citizens from unhealthy choices or influences. It appears that Dutch painters such as Pieter Aertsen (with his work A Meat Stall with the Holy Family Giving Alms, above) were promoting harmful imagery in their work. As for Rembrandt’s “ Slaughtered Ox ,” the Dutch master is now little more than a climate change denier. Starting on May 1, the ban on such images became part of Amsterdam’s push to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. While purportedly neutral on carbon, it is manifestly negative on free speech. As with other anti-free speech measures in Europe, this push again came from the left. The GreenLeft Party’s Anneke Veenhoff explained “I mean, if you want to be leading in climate policies and you rent out your walls to exactly the opposite, then what are you doing?” The answer is engaging in free speech. This is, of course, commercial speech, which is often subject to a lower level of protection. However, this shows the danger of using the differential standard to target products or industries viewed as unhealthy or ill-advised for consumers. In Amsterdam, the ban will cover industries such as airlines, including KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, one of the largest employers and revenue generators in the country. Notably, activists compare this to cigarette advertising bans, confirming the very slippery slope danger that those companies raised when they were targeted. Hannah Prins, a...
