No Kings? In Europe, Monarchs Are Far More Popular Than Politicians In Europe, monarchs are far more popular than the politicians who govern. As Visual Capitalist details below , using data from Morning Consult , visualized by The European Correspondent , monarchs hold an approval advantage of nearly 30 points over national leaders. The gap appears in every country analyzed. The pattern reveals a clear divide: leaders making policy decisions often face public backlash, while ceremonial figures largely avoid it. Approval Ratings for Elected and Unelected Leaders Below, we break down approval ratings across eight European countries. From the UK to Luxembourg, monarchs outperform politicians across the board. Spain stands out with the largest gap, while even the narrowest differences still favor royalty. Why Do Monarchs Poll Better? One key explanation lies in the fundamentally different roles these figures play. Monarchs are typically nonpartisan, symbolic heads of state, largely removed from day-to-day political decision-making. This helps them avoid the scrutiny and backlash that elected leaders inevitably face. By contrast, national leaders are directly responsible for policy decisions on issues like inflation, immigration, and public services. These decisions often divide public opinion, dragging down approval ratings. Spain and the Netherlands: The Biggest Gaps Spain has the widest popularity divide, with King Felipe VI outpacing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez by nearly 40 points. This reflects broader dissatisfaction with political leadership, alongside relatively stable support for the monarchy. The Netherlands also shows a notable gap, with King Willem-Alexander maintaining a significant lead despite historically low approval ratings for the monarchy itself. This highlights how unpopular political leadership can become by comparison. Even Lower-Rated Monarchs Still Lead Even in countries where monarchs have more modest approval ratings, such as the UK, their sta...

gorodenkoff/iStock via Getty Images First Tracks Biotherapeutics ( TRAX ) arrived on the NASDAQ just a few days ago (April 20th), but they did not arrive through a generic IPO; instead, they were created through a huge spin-off. First Tracks was born from AnaptysBio. For years, this parent company has been operating from two angles, pulling in royalties generated by their already out-licensed stable blockbuster drugs like the GSK cancer drug, Jemperli. The other part of the company was focused on clinical-stage drug development, meaning that AnaptysBio was pouring tens of millions of dollars every single year into the development of new assets. This model was depleting the parent company of cash. In 2023 AnaptysBio spent $132.3 million on R&D, in 2024 $163.8 million, and in 2025 $136.0 million. This meant that the company has always had negative net income. In 2023 it was -$163 million, in 2024 -$145 million, and in 2025 -$13.2 million from continuing operations. So to finally start generating positive cash flow, AnaptysBio made the decision to spin off their whole R&D division, which consists of three drugs in various development and trial stages. This division is, as of April 20th, First Tracks Biotherapeutics, trading under NASDAQ:TRAX. First Tracks is now a pre-revenue company with three pipeline drugs in development: ANB033, which focuses on celiac disease (CeD) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE); Rosnilimab, focusing on moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and finally, early-stage ANB101. While the exact late-stage indications for this drug have not yet been specified, it will likely be used to cure broader autoimmune and inflammatory pathways like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or scleroderma (systemic sclerosis). Despite First Tracks having an uncommonly safe market debut, with huge cash reserves, at this time I rate them as a Hold, specifically to wait until the waves after the spin-off quiet down. One of the main reasons for my skepticism at th...

SpaceX has not set a specific IPO date, but shares will probably start trading in late June or early July. The rocket and satellite manufacturer is reportedly seeking a $1.75 trillion valuation for the listing, which would make it the largest IPO in U.S. history by a wide margin. Despite the excitement, investors should think twice before buying SpaceX shares right away. From its initial valuation, history says the stock is likely to underperform the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) over the long term. Continue reading
