The EV transition might have hit a hurdle in the U.S., but it’s not slowing down in East Africa, where several startups are vying for a piece of the burgeoning electric motorbike market. Zeno is one of those companies, and this week it announced a $25 million Series A to expand its app-controlled battery-swap network and produce more of its Emara motorcycles. About $20.5 million of the total was an equity fundraise, Zeno co-founder and CEO Michael Spencer told TechCrunch. It was led by Congruent Ventures with participation from Active Impact and Lowercarbon Ventures. The remaining $4.5 million is a debt facility from Camber Road and Trifecta Capital. Zeno had previously raised a $9.5 million seed round led by Lowercarbon Ventures and Toyota Ventures. Since emerging from stealth a-year-and-a-half ago, Zeno has built more than 800 of its Emara motorbikes and set up more than 150 charging locations across four countries in East Africa. The Zeno Emara has a long seat to carry passengers and cargo. Mahaney pointed to the company’s accelerating revenue growth across retail, advertising, and cloud computing as key drivers behind his bullish stance. Speaking in an interview with CNBC, Mahaney explained that following a three-and-a-half-year rally in tech stocks ( VGT ), ( XLK ), ( IYW ), valuations had become unappealing with little market dislocation. The recent pullback, however, has changed the calculus for investors looking at the sector. Mahaney highlighted Amazon’s ( AMZN ) record cloud backlog growth in the most recent quarter and expects healthy margins, particularly in the back half of the year. “There’s greater market skepticism about this name than I think at any point I’ve seen in a couple of years,” he said. “That creates your opportunity.” Beyond Amazon, Mahaney sees attractive valuations across mega-cap internet names, noting that Alphabet ( GOOG ), ( GOOGL ), Amazon ( AMZN ), and Meta ( META ) are all trading close to 20x earnings on 2027 estimates. Each day when you wake up, you come back to yourself. You see the room around you, feel your body brush against your clothes and think about your plans, worries and hopes for the day. This daily internal experience is miraculous and mysterious, and the subject of Michael Pollan’s new book, A World Appears. It also may be under siege, Pollan said. He recently suggested that people need a “consciousness hygiene” to defend our internal world against invaders that are trying to move in. Our ability to sit with our thoughts and perceive the world, he argues, is increasingly disrupted by algorithms engineered to tickle our dopamine receptors and capture our attention. Meanwhile, people are forming attachments to non-human chatbots, projecting consciousness on to entities that do not possess it. I spoke with Pollan over the phone about what consciousness hygiene looks like in practice. Our conversation has been edited for length and clarity. You have said that consciousness is a “precious realm” and that we should adopt a “consciousness hygiene”. That idea is intriguing – can you first tell me what we’re developing a hygiene around? In this case, I’m referring specifically to human consciousness – this private space of interiority where we enjoy a very high degree of mental freedom. It’s the space in which we daydream, mind wander, talk to ourselves, and it is this very precious thing. In the course of writing the book, I realized that our consciousness is under siege, and that it’s being polluted by several different things. What things? One is our president, who manages to dominate our headspace to a remarkable degree. Most enterprise RAG pipelines are optimized for one search behavior. They fail silently on the others. A model trained to synthesize cross-document reports handles constraint-driven entity search poorly. A model tuned for simple lookup tasks falls apart on multi-step reasoning over internal notes. Most teams find out when something breaks. Databricks set out to fix that with KARL, short for Knowledge Agents via Reinforcement Learning. The company trained an agent across six distinct enterprise search behaviors simultaneously using a new reinforcement learning algorithm. The result, the company claims, is a model that matches Claude Opus 4.6 on a purpose-built benchmark at 33% lower cost per query and 47% lower latency, trained entirely on synthetic data the agent generated itself with no human labeling required. That comparison is based on KARLBench, which Databricks built to evaluate enterprise search behaviors. "A lot of the big reinforcement learning wins that we've seen in the community in the past year have been on verifiable tasks where there is a right and a wrong answer," Jonathan Frankle, Chief AI Scientist at Databricks, told VentureBeat in an exclusive interview. "The tasks that we're working on for KARL, and that are just normal for most enterprises, are not strictly verifiable in that same way." Those tasks include synthesizing intelligence across product manager meeting notes, reconstructing competitive deal outcomes from fragmented customer records, answering questions about account history where no single document has the full answer and generating battle cards from unstructured internal data. In 2026, you can, from the comfort of your couch, wager on when the US will bomb a foreign country. And for Kalshi and Polymarket, that’s quite literally the business model: betting on anything. (After we recorded this episode, Polymarket even briefly featured a wager on whether nuclear war would break out before 2027; the company removed it.) Sports are where these firms make the bulk of their money, which is why both Kalshi and Polymarket are in the crosshairs of so many state gambling authorities. But this industry also thinks of itself as something far grander. Prediction market players want to be the news, and they’ve even devised new, frankly unconvincing frameworks for why they should be considered legitimate sources of information — instead of just anything-goes casinos.
