imaginima/E+ via Getty Images The U.S. economy is far better positioned to weather the ongoing energy ( USO ) ( BNO ) ( UNG ) crisis than it was during the 2007-08 oil surge, according to Carlyle Analysis. The firm pointed to “fundamental” reasons why stocks ( SPY ) ( DIA ) ( QQQ ) have held up despite the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Since 2006-07, U.S. nominal income has doubled and real gross domestic product is roughly 50% larger, while oil consumption has remained flat. This means each dollar of economic output is now significantly less energy-intensive. Meanwhile, the bigger shift, Carlyle noted, is the U.S.'s transformation from energy importer to exporter. The U.S. net energy trade balance has swung from deficit to surplus, reducing the drag that higher crude prices once created. Additionally, elevated oil prices now stimulate domestic capital expenditure, partially offsetting consumer pain. "When you add in the dramatic reversal in the net energy trade balance from deficit to surplus ('The risk is time') and the capex stimulated by higher energy prices, the first $20 of the increase in oil prices since the start of the conflict probably added to US GDP on net," Carlyle said. Stocks also have an earnings tailwind as Big Tech ( VGT ) ( MAGS ) firms post massive quarterly beats, helping drive equity indices to new all-time highs. Getty Images Originally published on May 4, 2026 In my last note, we walked through Jerome Powell's recent FOMC press conference. The departing Fed Chair was again silent on the balance sheet expansion (for a third consecutive press conference). Meanwhile, they've added $170 billion worth of Treasuries since December. And remember, Powell said in December the expansion would continue "indefinitely." Conversely, Kevin Warsh, the incoming Chair, has said publicly the balance sheet needs to shrink. So, the path of the Warsh-led Fed has been telegraphed. And it's eleven days away. As we've said often in the post-GFC era of Fed asset purchases (balance sheet expansion) - the resulting liquidity injection tends to make stocks go up. With that, will stopping and reversing on the balance sheet prick the exuberance of the stock market? To front-run this debate, Stephen Miran (Trump's appointed Fed Governor) delivered a speech in late March at the Economic Club of Miami. He told us how they are positioning this balance sheet regime change. In this speech (see it here ), Miran reframes the entire "reserve scarcity" problem, tying it to bank regulation. He notes that the "ample reserves" framework Powell uses to justify indefinite balance sheet expansion is not a natural feature of the system. It's a function of Dodd-Frank and Basel. Specifically, the liquidity coverage ratio requirements force banks to hold large reserve balances. The internal liquidity stress test standards do the same. Banks are not holding $3 trillion in reserves because they want to. They are holding it because the regulators require it. So, the demand for reserves is dictated by regulation, and that's the lever the Trump administration intends to pull. The first item on Miran's list of paths forward is to ease the liquidity coverage ratio and the internal liquidity stress test standards. Lower the regulatory demand for reserves. Then the balance sheet can come down without creating the scarcity that would...

With a fortified hull that can break through ice, the MV Hondius – the scene of a suspected hantavirus outbreak – is not the average cruise ship. The 107-metre polar explorer vessel is small, nimble and made for touring the natural wonders of Arctic and Antarctic waters. In place of the amusement arcades, ballrooms and deck-top waterparks that may be found on larger vessels, such as those where thousands became marooned during the Covid pandemic , the Hondius has an open observation lounge and lecture room in which biologists, geologists and glaciologists give lectures. A landmark ruling set back the right Congress granted – of racial equality in electoral opportunity – to keep Republicans in power In the late 19th century, after Reconstruction, US federal protections for Black voters began to erode. Southern states sought to reshape their electoral systems – through poll taxes, literacy tests and districting – to consolidate political control for white supremacist politicians. Over decades this led to Jim Crow laws, under which most Black Americans in the south were effectively disenfranchised despite constitutional rights. The Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965 was supposed to end that iniquity. The US supreme court is turning the clock back; reviving a system where formal voting rights for minorities remain, but political power does not. What is striking today is the speed of the reversal: following last week’s court decision to substantially weaken section 2 of the VRA – the main federal limitation on gerrymandering in many red states – Republicans are moving swiftly to redraw maps, placing previously protected Black congressional districts at risk. Moira Donegan argued in the Guardian last week that the court’s 6-3 decision not only reflected its rightwing bias but completed chief justice John Roberts’s long project of dismantling the VRA. It’s hard to disagree. Continue reading...

Eaton delivered a great quarter; Tuesday's price action in the stock be darned. This power management provider has orders as far as the eye can see, driven largely by the AI data center boom. Revenue for the first quarter ended March 31 increased nearly 17% year-over-year to a record $7.45 billion, ahead of the LSEG compiled analysts' consensus estimate of $7.08 billion. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) rose a little over 3% to $2.81, also outpacing the $2.74 expected, according to LSEG. ETN YTD mountain Eaton YTD While trimming some of their earlier losses, Eaton shares were still down more than 2% in afternoon trading to $412 each. We bought the dip Tuesday morning at $402. Explaining the buy, Jim Cramer later said on the Morning Meeting: "We are buying because the market is wrong." With the trade, we upgraded Eaton stock back to our buy-equivalent 1 rating and raised our price target to $450 from $425. Bottom line There is no doubt about it; Eaton shares came into Tuesday's print on a roll. They hit an all-time intraday high of $435 each on Friday. What that means is that there was/is "hot money" in the stock. Hot money is a term used for investors who get in and get in quickly, like traders, looking to make a quick profit with minimal interest in the longer-term investment thesis unfolding. They come in for the momentum and bail at the first sign of trouble. The hot money in Eaton was focused on two things: a miss in Electrical Americas' profitability, and what appears to be conservative guidance. We, however, think those concerns are shortsighted. You're not in this name for one quarter, or even the next six months. You're in it because there is an insatiable demand for energy and electrification solutions for the foreseeable future. For that reason, we think it's more prudent to instead focus on quarterly revenue topping expectations in all segments and an acceleration of backlog growth. A crucial indicator of future financial performance, the backlog at Eato...

Year-to-date, total inflows have climbed to an impressive $673B, underscoring sustained appetite for equities. A notable driver of this trend is the Invesco QQQ Trust ( QQQ ), which amassed roughly $10B over the past 21 days. This marks its strongest three-week inflow since October 2025 and ranks as the third-largest such period on record. The surge follows a sharp reversal from March, when the fund experienced $11B in outflows—its steepest decline in at least four years. Meanwhile, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF ( VOO ) led all funds in April, pulling in $25B and accumulating $47B so far this year, highlighting broad-based confidence in U.S. equities. jetcityimage/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Back in early December of last year, I made the decision to upgrade Planet Fitness, Inc. ( PLNT ) from a Sell to a Hold. During the time that I had been bearish about the company, it had materially underperformed the market. My problem was not with the quality of the business. Rather, it had to do with valuation. But last December, I believed that fundamentals had improved enough to justify a more neutral stance; I upgraded PLNT. Truthfully, I was a bit premature in upgrading it. Since then, the stock has fallen 39.3%, while the S&P 500 ( SP500 ) is up 6.3%. Normally when you see a return disparity of this magnitude, it is because of worsening fundamentals. But objectively speaking, Planet Fitness is doing quite well. I would say that, based on the data that's currently available, the company is certainly getting closer to a further upgrade. I won't go so far as to do that today. But if we see the stock fall another 10% or 15% without a corresponding worsening in fundamentals, upgrading it will be almost guaranteed. Hopefully, that will come sooner rather than later. I say this because, on May 7th, management will be announcing financial results covering the first quarter of the company's 2026 fiscal year. As we approach that date, analysts believe that further expansion on the top and bottom lines will occur. This is encouraging, to say the least. But only time will tell what the end result will be. Until then, I will stick with my Hold rating. Shareholders Are Feeling Sore Author - SEC EDGAR Data Since I last wrote about Planet Fitness late last year, investors have received data covering only one additional operating quarter. That happens to be the final quarter of the company's 2025 fiscal year . By every measure that I looked at, it was actually a good time for shareholders. Revenue amounted to $376.3 million. That happened to be 10.5% above the $340.5 million that the company reported the year prior. And as the ch...

The rising number of private renters in Britain have for too long put up with chronically insecure tenancy agreements and poor conditions The defining trend in British housing in recent decades has been towards private renting. The sector in England nearly doubled in size between 2004 and 2013 . By 2023 almost two-fifths of households were either renting privately or socially. Meanwhile, the dream of home ownership has steadily eroded: 39% of 25- to 34-year-olds owned their home in 2023, 20 percentage points lower than the peak (59%) in 2000. Many younger adults now rent from a private landlord as the default, and expect to do so for the rest of their lives . Which is why the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Act is important. Until last week, landlords could evict a tenant for requesting a reasonable repair, or challenging a rent hike . A poll in 2023 for the charity Shelter found that tenants who complained to their landlord or local authority were 159% more likely to be served a no-fault eviction notice than those who did not. The fear was that complaints could cost tenants their homes. It was customary for landlords to pre-emptively evict tenants if they wanted to raise rents. Continue reading...

Trump's Project Freedom Likely Triggered By Oil Market's One-Month Countdown To Chaos What is well established about President Trump's newly announced Project Freedom is that the U.S. military is helping "guide" commercial vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz . The battle over the Hormuz chokepoint comes as the oil market appears to be one month away from a potential "tipping point." Without a resolution, traders warn that global crude and refined-product stockpiles could be drawn down to dangerous levels, creating dire conditions for another violent leg higher in fuel prices that could spark economic chaos. Last week, ConocoPhillips was the first to warn about imminent "critical shortages" of oil for some nations as the Iran war that has crippled global energy flows enters its third month. "The biggest challenge we're about to face is that the markets sort of had a bit of a grace period initially when the tankers that left the Persian Gulf in late February were still on the water; now all of those have reached their destination," ConocoPhillips CFO Andy O'Brien told analysts last Thursday, touching on a critical subject we outlined to readers at the start of April. Source " We are going to start to see some import-dependent countries potentially start to face critical shortages as we get into the June-July time frame," at which point the dreaded "demand destruction" kicks in , O'Brien warned. ConocoPhillips' ominous warning was followed very shortly by President Trump's Project Freedom plan to provide military escorts for ships through Hormuz. On Monday, two US Navy destroyers transited the waterway and entered the Persian Gulf after navigating an Iranian barrage of missiles, drones, and gunboats. This allowed two US-flagged ships to safely transit through the maritime chokepoint to safer waters. Trump's Project Freedom appears to be a response to the dire warnings from oil giants and Wall Street analysts , who see demand destruction quickly approaching if the Hormu...
