Traders are bracing for more weakness in emerging-market currencies over the coming month as the Iran war escalates, according to a key options pricing measure. One-month risk reversals — derivatives measuring the relative cost of downside insurance versus upside exposure — on an index of emerging currencies tracked by JPMorgan Chase & Co. have risen sharply in recent days, as concerns grow of a prolonged conflict that keeps oil prices elevated. They are now trading above equivalent one-year contracts, an unusual scenario where investors are paying more for protection at the front-end of the options curve than further out. So acute is this inversion that the spread between one-month and one-year skews — the gap between short- and long-dated downside protection costs — is the widest since 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic sparked a wide-ranging selloff across world markets. Historically such inversions have coincided with acute volatility shocks, including the 2008 financial crisis and the March 2020 pandemic turmoil. That’s partly because corporate hedging demand from energy importers and others exposed to trade uncertainty is usually concentrated in shorter maturities. “As in 2008 and 2020, the market has moved to price an acute near-term risk that is generally assumed, perhaps optimistically, to be transitory,” said Nicholas Wall , head of global FX strategy at JPMorgan Asset Management . Strikes on two vessels off the coast of Iraq prompted the nation’s oil terminals to suspend operations , in an escalation that’s likely to leave global shipowners even less willing to consider crossing the vital Strait of Hormuz. The longer the conflict drags on, the bigger the impact on energy markets that have already seen fuel prices soar, with some parts of the world experiencing shortages . Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern producers have been forced to slash oil output in recent days, and are racing to implement workarounds to export barrels outside of Hormuz. The strait — which handles about of a fifth of the world’s oil flows — has been effectively closed since the war broke out, choking off commodity supplies to the rest of the world. Prices of fuels like diesel and jet fuel are surging as refineries in the region reduce production or shut completely, while fuel makers elsewhere balk at high crude prices. The International Energy Agency warned on Thursday that the conflict will slash global oil supply by 8 million barrels a day this month — the largest-ever disruption to output. Attacks on vessels have intensified in recent days. The UK Maritime Trade Operations said on Thursday that a ship was struck by an unknown projectile just north of Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates, while there were three attacks on Wednesday. Global benchmark Brent crude surged as much as 10% on Thursday as the crisis deepened, with even news of a historic 400-million-barrel release of reserves coordinated by the International Energy Agency unable to cool the rally.
