Shares soared 23% in the session that followed, making it the second-best S&P 500 ( SP500 ) performer on a day when the market rallied to record highs. I had a hold rating on DVA two years ago. Back in May 2024 , I noted significant EPS upside in the quarters that followed, but the stock’s valuation had met my fair value estimate. The stock was indeed almost flat before this week’s surge. Today, I am upgrading DVA to a Buy. I’ll call out that the profit growth trend is strong, while its price-to-earnings ratio is modest. I’ll also provide a refreshed look at the technical situation. DVA Posts a 2nd-Straight Earnings Surge Stockcharts.com In May, DaVita reported a solid set of quarterly results. Q1 non-GAAP EPS of $2.87 topped the Wall Street consensus forecast of $2.33, while revenue of $3.4 billion, up 6% from the same period a year earlier, was a modest $60 million beat. The management team hiked its guidance , prompting the big stock price gain. Indeed, shares soared after the numbers hit the tape. The 23% advance marked a second consecutive post-earnings surge, according to data from Option Research & Technology Services. In fact, the February gain snapped a streak of 7 straight post-earnings declines. Looking ahead to the August report, the options market prices in an elevated 7.8% earnings-related stock price swing based on the at-the-money straddle expiring soonest after the reporting day. Looking back on the quarter that was, DaVita delivered big Q1 numbers . Operating income rose 15% YoY, largely due to improved margins and a 4.4% increase in revenue per treatment.
