4kodiak/E+ via Getty Images During the conference call , Murphy Oil ( MUR ) management indicated that they had basically allocated a bit more to exploration than was usually the case. The last article touched upon risk assessment as a part of deciding what to do and what not to do internationally. In Vietnam, the success rate so far has been 100% because those fields have a lot of information and a long production history. This puts the company ahead of some of the competition when it comes to increasing production. But that production in some cases may still be years away. In Côte d’Ivoire, the conference call discussed that there is not yet a pricing agreement that makes this particular discovery profitable enough to proceed. However, there are some possibilities that could lead to a future agreement. There was also a discussion about a very common situation in this industry. This fiscal year was already planned because there are lead times for several of the projects. But now, fiscal 2027 is being discussed throughout the industry, and it is being discussed with higher commodity prices in mind. That could lead to higher production both in the United States and worldwide as companies move to take advantage of the higher price environment that is likely to be around for a while. One of the things about economic conclusions is that timing is almost never part of the research. While economics can tell you what the pressures are leading to what will happen, economics cannot tell you when it will happen. That is because the timing depends upon so many things. In this case, a lack of long-term information has led many companies to stay with the fiscal year 2026 plans made when commodity prices were much lower. But now it appears that the supply deficit will be around for a while. That is changing a lot of ideas about fiscal year 2027. That includes this company. We will have to see what management comes up with when the fiscal year 2027 budget is actually announced. But...

Welcome to Going Private , I’m Sinead Cruise and this is Bloomberg’s twice-weekly newsletter about private markets and the forces moving capital away from the public eye. Today, we look at Blackstone’s capital injection into troubled borrower Medallia , fresh launches and accelerating growth in credit secondaries and a blistering attack on financial advisers from one of private credit’s biggest foes. But first we explore Apollo’s multi-pronged efforts to transform private markets. If you’re not already on our list, sign up here . Have feedback? Email us at goingprivate@bloomberg.net Talking ’bout a revolution Apollo’s mission to reboot confidence in private markets hit a milestone this week after it committed to provide daily pricing on its entire $830 billion credit book by end-September. “Trust and reputation now more than ever necessitates greater transparency on fund pricing for fund investors,” Chief Executive Officer Marc Rowan told an analyst conference call. “When public markets reprice, private markets should too,” he added. Apollo’s efforts to innovate “had not always made the firm popular” among peers, Rowan said, but the firm had never seen a market where enhanced liquidity and transparency did not spark “tremendous growth”. “If we hold a position with anyone else, we take the lowest mark always, whether we agree with that mark or not,” he said. “That is indicative of where someone might sell the position, and therefore we mark it to the lowest price.” Apollo’s move to offer daily pricing is expected to heap pressure on rivals to conform, particularly if investors question why one firm can and others can’t. One senior executive at a major private credit provider said he believed institutional investors were broadly content with quarterly pricing, a significant upgrade on the annual updates provided in the past. So far, he had seen little sign that people cared “very much about moving beyond that”. “I don’t know how you value private markets assets on a d...

Welcome to Tech In Depth, our daily newsletter about the business of tech from Bloomberg’s journalists around the world. Today, Natasha Mascarenhas reports on a startup’s unusual pitch to find highly coveted computer engineers. Tech Across the Globe Nvidia’s deals: Nvidia will invest as much as $2.1 billion in data center firm IREN, just a day after a similar $500 million agreement with fiber-optic maker Corning. Read the details here . Apple’s new device: The iPhone maker is in late stages of testing new AirPods with built-in cameras. The work is part of a push into AI-enhanced wearables . Peloton’s progress: The fitness company raised its full-year revenue outlook, suggesting a turnaround may finally be moving forward. Chief Executive Officer Peter Stern is confident in the direction . Revalued Chinese startup Moonshot AI raised about $2 billion in its latest funding round, boosting its valuation to more than $20 billion — more than four times its value at the end of 2025. Investors are eager to back a group of Chinese AI startups such as Moonshot and DeepSeek vying with OpenAI and Anthropic to provide top-of-the-line AI services. Unusual Pitch If starting a company is like starting a cult, what’s the best way to recruit your first few members? Depending on who you ask, the answer is some blend of a competitive offer, an ambitious mission and a knack for the art of argumentation. Or, in the case of Monk Chief Executive Officer George Kurdin, who is helping businesses streamline their accounts receivable work, the answer is money for rent . Fresh off of a $25 million Series A round , Kurdin and his team of 10 recently put together a recruiting effort in which his AI company will cover a year’s rent for anyone who introduces an engineer to Monk that he then goes on to hire. Any residents of San Francisco, New York (where Monk is based) or London would instantly recognize the draw of such a promise. Covering one’s biggest annual expense by just exercising the network...

Despite some ups and downs to start the year, the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has climbed about 6% in 2026 so far as of this writing. But looking under the hood reveals a much wider range of outcomes across various market sectors. Energy stocks have boomed while financial stocks have struggled, for example. Beyond the large-cap index, small-cap stocks have zoomed higher. The disparate performance of various sectors is a testament to the power of index investing. But underweighting overvalued market segments and overweighting undervalued segments could ultimately yield returns better than investing entirely in an S&P 500 index fund . The analysts at Vanguard updated their Capital Markets Model to identify market opportunities. Their long-term forecast suggests two market segments could outperform the S&P 500 over the next decade, and it offers two exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to buy to take advantage. Welcome to Edition 8.40 of the Rocket Report! Even though the Falcon 9 is the most used rocket of the world, and groundbreaking in its reuse capabilities, SpaceX is actively seeking to make it obsolete with the Starship program. Stephen has a great story in this week's newsletter highlighting the fact that we're probably past the peak of the Falcon era of flight. The Brooklyn-based artist’s songs seem to follow private trains of thought, which shift their subtle musical colours in a way that will slink in to your head, too From Brooklyn, New York Recommended if you like Cate Le Bon, Astrid Sonne, Julia Holter Up next New single No Avatar out now “No, I won’t take a photo / Just walking around with no avatar,” Frances Chang sings on No Avatar, conversational and serene against little whorls of piano, skittish drum fizz and softly flaring synths. Like Astrid Sonne’s fragmented songwriting, the Brooklyn-based musician’s songs are hard to pin down, mirroring the single’s desire to avoid outward definition. Her songs work to an internal logic, evoking a sort of uncanny domesticity: casual piano refrains, rainy percussion; the melty haze of a horizon at dusk; grooves slinking in at the end of a song like next door’s cat making itself at home. It’s a sound that shares a lot with the modern Copenhagen scene of which Sonne is a key fixture, but with more welcoming softness and warmth: Chang’s January single I Can Feel the Waves is a six-minute suite that starts out a little edgy, then yields with gorgeous warped piano and disarmingly intimate focus. The Republic of Memory by Mahmud El Sayed; The Rainshadow Orphans by Naomi Ishiguro; No Ghosts by Max Lury; Palaces of the Crow by Ray Nayler; Moon Over Brendle by Jeff Noon The Republic of Memory by Mahmud El Sayed (Gollancz, £22) On a gigantic spaceship halfway through its 400-year voyage to a new world, hundreds of Earth colonists are kept in frozen stasis by the ever-increasing maintenance crew. Not all the crew are happy with the way their lives are harshly controlled by the Administration, and peaceful protests have inspired whispers of revolution. The multicultural city-ship has two official languages: Inglez and Arabek. Iskander Ezz is a translator between Crew and Administration, aware that “when you speak a different language, you become another person”. Damietta, his younger cousin, finds the unofficial Nupol better for communicating with her fellow protesters. Nupol, an argot made up of many “dead Earth” languages, is used throughout the book by several viewpoint characters, adding a distinctive flavour to a speculative fiction its author calls Arabfuturism. Partly inspired by the historic Arab spring, this is a thoughtful, exciting space opera. The Rainshadow Orphans by Naomi Ishiguro (Solstice, £20) The first volume of a trilogy inspired by Japanese pop culture is set in bustling, crowded Rainshadow City, where hi-tech wealth and a corrupt emperor exist alongside magic, poverty and criminality. Toshiko, Jun and Mei are the Kawakamis, haphazardly seeking revenge on the Lucky Crow gang for the murder of their adoptive Aunt. When Toshiko almost accidentally steals a precious dragon pearl from a powerful gangster, they’re plunged into a fast-moving adventure involving a conspiracy to deport all the city’s illegal immigrants to certain death, and replace low-paid workers with attractive female robots. Various plot strands see characters discovering magical powers, a mother dragon desperate to save her baby’s life, and a strangely helpful cat. Trope-heavy, e...

In an exclusive interview, a seafarer describes the strike on the MKD Vyom in the Gulf of Oman that killed his friend and crewmate, Dixit Solanki The blast tore through the engine room of the tanker MKD Vyom without warning on the morning of 1 March. “There were immense shock waves and a fireball,” says Basis*, a seafarer on one of the first ships to suffer a fatal attack in the Gulf of Oman during the US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran. “For one or two seconds, I was knocked out,” he says. “Everything went black. The Guardian analyzed ICE records from January-August 2025, as advocates say the family-separation crisis will lead to generational trauma After three months in immigration detention, 1,500 miles (2,400km) away from her 13-month-old daughter, LT was running out of options. Her baby, who was allergic to formula and had other food sensitivities, had been vomiting constantly and needed breastmilk. But the government refused to release LT – an asylum seeker from Haiti – on bond. So, the family’s pediatrician petitioned the government to allow her to pump and mail her breastmilk from the Dilley detention center in Texas to her baby in Florida. That request was denied. During the first seven months of 2025, the administration arrested 18,400 parents – including 15,000 fathers and 3,000 mothers. They are the parents of 27,000 to 32,000 children. The administration arrested the parents of at least 12,000 US citizen children. Nearly 7,500 fathers and 1,000 mothers who were arrested had a different nationality than at least one of their children. In about half of these families, siblings had different citizenships from each other. On average, the Trump administration has been arresting about 2,300 parents each month and deporting 1,400 parents every month. The Biden administration , in comparison, deported about 700 per month in 2024. Continue reading...
