The UK gilt market: It’s always important, but mostly pretty boring. Not so this week. On Friday, the yield on 10-year government bonds moved above 5.16%. That’s an 18-year high and dramatic enough to make headlines. There was drama elsewhere, too. Yields rose nastily around the world as the Iran war’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz finally broke through market complacency. The 10-year yield in France is 3.79%, and in Greece it’s 3.86%. But yields rose faster and further in the UK (0.17% against more like 0.12% in Europe). There is a good argument that the yield gap between the UK and the US and Europe is in part the Bank of England’s fault. That’s because it’s been selling the mountain of bonds it bought during quantitative easing. That rise in supply is pushing gilt prices down and yields up. This works as an explanation, but only goes so far. Unless the BOE indulged in a mad selling spree Friday, it’s not enough. Gilts started higher and are rising faster than the rest. There is something else going on. Much of the historic difference over the last few years has been about policy choices. UK debt to GDP is running close to 100%. Before the pandemic, around 4.4% of UK state spending went to paying interest on existing debt. Now it’s heading for 10%. In addition to the cost of borrowing, taxes and spending have gone up under the current UK government. Inflation looks to be doing the same. There was a tiny burst of positivity earlier this week when GDP numbers suggested the UK economy expanded by 0.6% in the first quarter. Unfortunately, analysts pointed out that the growth might have been as much a statistical mirage as anything else. It is also worth noting that real GDP per head (the thing that actually matters) was down 0.1% on the quarter and up only 0.6% on a year ago. That isn’t going to touch the sides of what’s needed to make Brits feel better after years of stagnation. The next part of the explanation for what’s going on in the gilt market is not about no...

Mismanagement and political campaigning have sucked the joy out of an event meant to bring people together For the past two years, amid intensifying controversy over Israel’s participation in Eurovision, I and most other Eurovision superfans have stuck by the contest, despite clear misgivings. This week, however, as the usual collection of power ballads and jokey songs compete in Vienna, we are not bonding over a common joy, but rather over our shared sense of sadness about the politicisation of the contest. This sadness pales in comparison to the trauma and grief experienced by the people affected by the wars fuelling this politicisation, but it is there nonetheless. Dave Keating is a Brussels-based journalist and author of The Owned Continent: How to Free Europe from American Military, Economic and Cultural Dependence Continue reading...

Roman Mykhalchuk/iStock via Getty Images Unusual Machines, Inc. ( UMAC ) is a stock that continues to show strong potential. The company has positioned itself to reap the benefits of the drone market, particularly around the US made requirements. I reviewed the stock back in December and gave it a buy rating. I rated the company a buy for a variety of reasons. It is reshoring manufacturing to the US, it is doing so in a fast growing UAV market, government policy is requiring domestic manufacturing, and the company provides products to a variety of providers. The thesis has not changed as the company has continued to expand its capabilities and operations. The stock has been volatile. Just in 2026 the stock has seen lows below $11 a share and highs over $22 a share. A lot of this volatility comes from the price and size of the company currently along with the future potential. The stock is not cheap and it is still establishing itself in the market. The continued demand and growth along with future potential are what is driving the stock. This volatility has offered good opportunities for entry points into the stock. Seeking Alpha The stock has been having a strong run as of late, up until it reported earnings. The company reported earnings and saw its stock price dip by nearly 8% in a single day. The earnings report was not necessarily a bad report either. The stock had seen a strong run up to the earnings and they were not strong enough to keep the momentum. I think it was really based upon expectations of a beat and raise. Progress is still moving along for the company as it continues to grow its operations. The stock price of Unusual Machines has seen a strong run up since I reviewed the stock in December. The valuation is rich on the stock. I think the market demand and continued growth outweigh the risks and valuation and I remain bullish on the stock. Financials The company reported Q1 earnings that were solid but did not do enough to keep the rally going. The...

peshkov/iStock via Getty Images By Ryan J. Puplava AI Earnings Mania Driving Markets Higher This week reinforced a theme that has increasingly defined financial markets over the past two years: investors continue rewarding companies directly tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure spending, regardless of mounting valuation concerns. The market’s leadership remained heavily concentrated in semiconductors, networking, optical connectivity, data center infrastructure, and AI compute providers. While there were periods of volatility throughout the week, particularly after inflation data releases, investors repeatedly bought dips in AI-linked companies and pushed the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 to fresh record highs multiple times during the week. One of the most important earnings-related developments came from Cisco Systems ( CSCO ) on Thursday. The company delivered what many analysts described as a “blowout” quarter, fueled by accelerating AI infrastructure demand and massive hyperscaler orders for networking equipment. Cisco shares surged more than 13% following earnings and became the top-performing stock in the S&P 500 that day. The report was significant because it expanded the AI narrative beyond semiconductors into networking, power management, and connectivity infrastructure. The enthusiasm around AI spending was further reinforced by the blockbuster IPO of Cerebras Systems ( CBRS ). Shares exploded after pricing above the expected range, underscoring investor appetite for pure-play AI infrastructure exposure. The company’s focus on inference computing highlighted a growing realization that AI spending is broadening beyond training models into deployment and real-world workloads. Meanwhile, Nvidia ( NVDA ) remained the emotional center of the market. Nearly every trading session included a catalyst tied to the company, whether it was price target increases, reports surrounding Chinese chip sales approvals, anticipation for next week’s earnings report, ...

According to a SEC filing dated May 14, 2026, Alfreton Capital LLP increased its position in CCC Intelligent Solutions (NASDAQ:CCC) by 1,978,074 shares. The estimated value of these purchases was $12.96 million, based on the average closing price for the quarter. The value of the position at quarter-end fell by $5.29 million, which includes both share additions and price movement. CCC Intelligent Solutions operates at scale within the technology sector, leveraging advanced SaaS and AI-driven platforms to streamline operations for major players in the insurance and automotive industries. The company's strategy centers on digitizing complex workflows and connecting a broad network of industry participants through its integrated solutions. Its competitive advantage lies in its long-standing industry presence, comprehensive product suite, and ability to facilitate efficiency and connectivity across the insurance economy. UK-based Alfreton Capital’s recent purchase wasn’t a major addition, considering it already had a sizable stake in CCC. The company is Alfreton’s largest holding, by far. It likely took advantage of a buying opportunity to scoop up a few more shares at the right time. Continue reading
